I played through the original back when it first came out. Enjoyable if a bit generic 3D Diablo clone, but it just doesn't really have the replay value.
@Steven Hott: I'm pretty sure that Steam allows you to back all of your games onto a DVD, or even an external hard-drive. But, as far as i know, this is only for backup purposes. The DVD copy will not be an installable version, if you know what i mean. As in, you wont be able to pop the disc onto any old compter and install it onto it. It's literally a copy and paste of the files in your steam directory. If i'm correct.
I back up my games ever so often onto a spare external hard-drive so as, if i have to reinstall windows at any stage down the line, i won't have to redownload the files again. That would just take days to do. I just copy and paste them back into the Steam folder and steam looks after the rest (as far as updates etc goes). I hope this helps, but a quick browse on the Steam support website might fully answer your questions.
@kearneybobs: You can copy the files back into the Steamapps directory, then re-install via your account in Steam. It will save you having to download the game again. I've used this method to copy installs across my PC and laptop.
I've played through this game and it's expansion a few times now over the years and I'll just pop in real quick here to recommend two mods for the game that added to the fun factor.
The first is Xmax mod. This increases the amount of foes in the game by certain amounts, including bosses. I prefer the x10 setting, this makes the game an insane slaughterfest the whole way through, but some of the bosses can be challenging early game when you're not geared up yet or have your skillls unlocked since you'll be facing 3 of them (or more) at a time.
The second mod, which isn't really a mod but an enhancement is TQvault. This acts as "atma" did for diablo 2, allowing you to have an infinite stash to share items between your characters among other things. This works in combination well with Xmax because it also allows you to tweak the experience gain settings if you feel that you're levelling up too slow compared to the challenge. Plus many more features, but I personally just used it for the infinite shared stash as I like to mule and play many character builds, this is the app you'd want for that. Even though the game includes a shared stash, it's limited.
@bloog: Pretty much. There is so much loot on the ground after an encounter that it can fill your screen. It's awesome.
That being said there's an option in the TQvault to alter the chances of unique/rare items dropping. Not sure if it allows you to go into negative values though because I felt the extra loot was appropriate due to the added challenge of some of the boss encounters. There are some that will be frustrating depending on your class and build. AoE builds reign supreme in Xmax obviously heh.
Oh Steam, when will you stop with the whole $1=€1 debacle. I would have probably bought this game, and probably end up not playing this game if it wasn't for the whole unfair pricing. You could have had my money, so many times, but i cant bring myself to support your pricing structure that tries to rip off (most of) us Europeans.
This $10 game should be fairly priced at about €7-8, but nope, we are asked to pay €10 for this game.
You could probably argue that it's only a couple of euro, stop whining. But whan you compare prices of big games like L4D2 you really see the underlying problems with their pricing.
@Kenny Mmmmm, I love colons!: Possibly. But this bogey pricing began to occur exactly when they introduced the whole Euro pricing beta in december last year. Before then, we were paying the exact same as the US.
I haven't bought a full price game in over a year off of Steam because of this and i dont see myself doing so if this continues to be like this on Steam.
Well, actually i lie, i bought Braid, only because it was fairly priced across all regions (UK/US/EU).
Simpe as, i won't be supporting any publisher through Steam if thier games aren't priced fairly.
@ToastyUterus: I'm really not sure i get your logic.
Surely if 'they do not want to make their hard copies null' as you say, wouldn't they price them appropriately. They are hardly making a loss on them now are they?
Are you implying that they are pricing thier digital downloads higher so as to 'force' me to go and buy a physical product that (probably) costs them more to ship/make? A product that they are (likely) getting less of a cut from? That simply doesn't make sense.
It really doesn't make sense that i am able to go into multiple retailers where i live and buy almost all of the recently released games (from the last 3 years or so) on Steam at under half the price they are on Steam.
@kearneybobs: L4D2 is prices at 37,99€ or 49,99$. So, today, its 6 $ more, but who knows with that dollar, might be worth pennies before L4D2 comes out. But overall, 1€ is not 1$ when it comes to Valve games.
Either way, whining fail when you complain about prices you have not checked out, should have used Batman or Borderlands.
@Matshelge: L4D2 is €44.99 (that's fourty four Euro and ninty nine cents) for me in Ireland.
I bet you are not purchasing from one of these countries.
Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland.
The pricing in Europe has got a three tier system in operation and the countries listed above, 99% of the time, pay more for the exact same game. Your price of €37.99 appears to be correct for you, but i'm being asked for €44.99. So, for the countries listed above, $1=€1
You can find plenty of information on which countries are in which tier and how much they are paying on steamunpowered.eu

Xmax sounds cool. I guess you end up with much better loot since you have 10x the chances, right?
