Just finished watching the episode. It was an obvious tribute to Mitchell and Weibe. They even had a version of 'Twin Galaxies', an official gaming place that recorded scores. The names were identical.
Just had to pop in with the tribute bit before someone cries rip-off.
As for why its called Punky Pong... tribute. If they're going to go with alternate versions of names for Mitchell and Weibe that sound extremely similar (cant remember the names specifically), why not the same with Donkey Kong.
@Komrade Kayce: Because Weibe and Mitchell likely signed off on the episode concept, as did Twin Galaxies. Nintendo wouldn't dignify any company with an answer on using the name of one of thier games unless they were getting money for it.
And that's not a subtle jab at Nintendo, that's dead serious. You should go read some of the borderline criminal stuff they got away with during the SNES era.
@Komrade Kayce: Honestly, the in your face product placement was the best part. Why? Because Avatar is setting up to be one of the biggest failures of all time.
And when it does, I will sit here with a snide grin, forever vindicated against James Cameron.
One of the nice things about living in the Bahamas is that we get Canadian channels on cable, so I saw the tail-end of this last night, switching between it and "Glee". It was a pretty good episode, though the "Avatar" Product Placement was ridiculous.
Love the face that one guy on the left is making in the article picture. That's usually my reaction to badly researched gamer/game developer segments on TV shows too. To be fair though, this actually sounds decent, and certainly far better than that one House episode.
Yeah, anytime gamers are portrayed in the media words like "fragged" and "maj0r pwnage!" spew from their uninformed mouths. Why doesn't anyone ever portray gamers as intelligent people, why can function in society as well as from in front of a computer/tv screen?

Also, mean old Nintendo robots.

I know all about Nintendo. Hence the 'mean old Nintendo robots' comment. Its just some guy below was like 'Punky Pong? Come onnnnnnnn'.
I just thought the episode was pretty well done for the story it told. Well, except for the in your face Avatar product placement.

I honestly wanted to jump out of my window. As much as I love house... whoever wrote that episode deserves to be... anally raped with a steak knife.

I love bones so much. Seriously, seeing Bones appear on Kotaku is geeky heaven for me - well, maybe throw in an appearance by David Tennant in there.
Curse my Englishness, I'll probably have to wait a while before we get it over here.

It's easily my favorite crime show, the interaction between Bones and Booth is just delicious to watch - and of course, Emily Deschanel! Love it.
