@ibunkun: you saw Wii Install base in Japan? Wii install base almost 3x larger then PS3 install base, thats almost 9 million!!! Install base and in its first week of Final Fantasy Wii game sold around 35000 copies while PSP version of piece of crap soccer sold like 85000.

how you expect big sales with Final Fantasy XIII in Japan if they have 3.5-5.9 million install base on PS3 not to mention that with Wii install base Final Fantasy Wii sold for 35000 copies in its first week. Makes no sense.

@dd528: Absolutely true, but does average-stupid-consumer recognize a difference? I don't think so. Yes, you are hardcore gamer and you know what the REAL Final Fantasy sequel is. but average cosumer don't care while he can buy Wii and play other game with franchise name of it like Final Fantasy.

So i think Final Fantasy will sell only preorder and who want it already preordered it.

@Golgari: i am not talking how good a game will sell, for what is FF game are a given...i mean, history shows that every FF game for sony selled like hot cakes. what i wanted to bring up was the cross selling effects of games. take Gundam for example , Gundam is the money making franchise (like hello kitty,neon genesis evangelion and cute girl anime/manga girls ) i think, you can sell everything with it. a gundam game sells also consoles,wether portable or home based (remember gundam musou and the PSP games). so if anyone without a PS system (2,3 or P/Go) wants it buys the machine. just to wanted it to transfer to FF13. a small PS3 user base means, that everyone who really wants FF13 will buy a PS3. i really cant comment on wii, though i know too they have a huge userbase. can't say why FF CC crystal bearers sold so little. maybe to less marketing or media presence? dont know the sales figures of the past titles for GC,DS either.

PSP Go sales in Japan:
Week 1: 29k
Week 2: 14k
Week 3 (now): 6.4k

Wow, what a massive drop in sales. Even if the Wii hasn't been as hot as it has been, it still averages about 25k a week, which I'd say is pretty good for a system over three years old, and with almost 9M in the region.

To be honest, I didn't think the PSP Go would do well... but I didn't forsee THIS huge of a drop in sales. At this rate, it's likely to drop below 360's sales next week...

@N●Gage Croal: That is Sony's fault entirely though, I really believe that the demand is there for digital downloads but Sony are just so unprepared for what that entails.

I was interested in getting a PSP Go since my PSP1000 is starting to show its age, but who in their right mind would want to rely on the PSN for games. I mean, I don't know what it's like in the US, but there still isn't any of the PSP MGS games on the European store and judging from that, who knows if Peacewalker will see a PSN release...

@Uhyve: I wonder how much of an investment they have in the PSPGo? When you think about it, it could have easily been a pretty cheap transitional product, and they may not have been expecting it to take over anyway, but rather to slowly get its place in the market and pick up steam once the PSN library improved.

But with that said, I'd definitely go with a 3000 instead if I were you. I'm totally satisfied with my 2000, and since it plays all the same games as the Go, I don't see the point of buying the system with a smaller selection. Might as go with the cheaper product that has a larger selection, right?

All this doesn't matter, if Sony cannot continue dominance worldwide. 360 will still get more exclusive games, simply because it's more commercially viable to develop for a console with larger userbase.

@rich8606: Exclusives come from companies (i.e. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo) funding the developer. Otherwise, no one would do it because they could make a profit on every system at this point. Each console has a large enough install base for a profit, now . . .

I think it says a lot that even in Japan's seemingly over eager to adopt new revisions and the latest technology that the PSP Go has not overtaken regular old PSP as the DSi has done to the DS Lite. I want a Go bad, but this makes me wonder about how committed Sony will be to the platform should it continue to struggle, particularly in light of the "games don't need to be digital" comment.

I can also see why Nintendo is concerned seeing as Sony is taking over the pie, and it has precious little to reclaim its dominance with its weak software schedule and dubious peripheral hardware in line. I don't see anything in Nintendo's future that'll keep that Wii slice from shrinking by the week.

@grantanamo: I keep hoping for some big Black Friday or through the end of the year discounts. I'd need it to come down to $150 to justify getting it. Too much fear over the longevity of the unit, its future, and possible announcement of a PSP Go 2000 within the next few months scare me off the current MSRP.

Then again, FF13 hits shelves two weeks after NSMB Wii. It's going to be interesting to see how one Nintendo game fares against both the West (MW2, AC2, L4D2) and the East (FF13).

@GohanGVO: The games are so different that I don't know if it's fair to compare their sales. For example, New Super Mario Bros. for the DS sold more than FFVII and FFVIII combined. Granted portable games often sell more and that's no indication the Wii one will sell that much but if it does I don't think it's a fair comparison, especially considering how many more Wiis are in homes.

@Zunnoab: True. I have no doubt that the sales curve of NSMB Wii will differ from traditionally front-loaded titles like MW2, and it will take longer than a few months to determine the true impact of NSMB Wii.

At the very least, though, I do think it will be interesting to see how a 2D console Mario game -- a title that most anyone on the planet can approach and play -- performs at retail.

@Eternalbl: Judging by some of the discussions / arguments for this article, lots of armchair analyzing being done :P

I dunno, these kind of numbers are interesting for the first year or so of a console, but really, unless people expect the 360, PS3 or Wii to suddenly fall over dead and disappear like the Dreamcast, they're just numbers. How many people are going to look at that chart and go OMG PS3 IS LEADING I'LL NEED TO GO GET ONE NOW!

So in that regard I'd think the low sales of the PSPGo is pretty telling. #thejapanesehardwarechart

Really doesn't seem like that bad of sales for the PSP Go, especially when you look at the proportion of them sold to normal PSPs.

Surprisingly high sales of the PS3 though. I look forward to seeing what goes down when FFXIII comes out.
