Again. The official Bungie site has been teasing us with an impending announcement of some sort, now moving into the dreaded Countdown Clock phase — known at Kotaku Towers as "Code: Not This Shit Again" pegging a countdown toward something hitting this Thursday.

The teaser? Nearly identical to the one on display during E3 2008, save for minor changes. The drop time? Approximately 7 AM Bungie Standard Time. Be there or be square. Bring some breakfast popcorn.

<![CDATA["Superintendent" Back at Bungie.net]]> Looks like The Superintendent is back at Bungie. Confused? You may have missed the fuss in July when a game by that title, rumored to be a 2D platformer whose titular character is more Mr. Venezuela from "South Park" than he is Chalmers from "The Simpsons." Which is to say he's not an education bureaucrat, but a dude who keeps things clean and functioning and I suppose has a weapons-grade key ring on a pulley-chain.

Everyone thought this game would be announced at one of the summer's game conventions, but it wasn't. Then last night around 7 PDT the Super, who posts in the Bungie forums under his calling card identity of |||||, left a robotic, cryptic message transcript that of course tips off something, just not sure what. Announcement coming soon? Dunno. These things are designed to keep you checking back. Full transcript on the jump.

<![CDATA[Don't Expect Bungie's "Announcement" At PAX]]> When Bungie's plans to announce their new game went tits-up at E3 last week, it meant they'd have to save it, and go announce it at the next big event. That big event obviously wasn't Comic-Con, so a quick look on the calendar reveals...oh, could it be PAX, which kicks off on August 29? No, silly. Bungie have issued the following statement on their website:

For the record, we have no plans to make any big announcements or huge reveals at PAX this year. While we will have some Halo 3 multiplayer stuff for you to check out, this is not going to be the "big announcement" many of our fans are clamoring for. Rest assured that when the time is right, we will be making announcements and talking about the stuff we're currently working on. At the moment we do have three distinct projects underway within Bungie - some familiar, some not. Some on a closer horizon, some quite far off.

Three projects, at least one of them a Halo project, noted, thanks. Oh, and for the disappointed, just because they're keeping mum at PAX doesn't mean they can't announce anything at Leipzig, which starts August 20.

<![CDATA[Bungie.net Teases New Game Announcement]]> The official Bungie web site has been "interrupted" with a new cryptic splash page with imagery from what some have been calling The Superintendent, rumored to be a new 2D platforming game featuring a flat, plunger wielding hero obsessed with cleanliness. Can we expect an announcement today?

That game obviously wasn't announced at Microsoft's press conference earlier, nor was any other Bungie-helmed project. However, EA's press conference happens later today. Might want to keep your eyes peeled on that one, just in case the two happen to be related.

Just in case.

<![CDATA[New Bungie Game Announcement Next Monday?]]> The latest Bungie podcast, which features the usual internal shenanigans — we get up to speed on the developer's air conditioning situation whilst discussing all things Halo — ends with a potential tease about the team's next title being revealed. After lamenting the lack of hard, breaking news over the course of the 91-minute(!) podcast, co-hosts Brian Jarrard and Luke Smith cruelly tease something being revealed at E3.

The following exchange wraps up the Bungie Podcast.

Brian: Isn't there something going on on July 14th or something like that?
Luke: Yeah, around then.
Brian: Somehow that's sticking in my head for some reason. Guess we'll have to see.
Luke: Yep, we'll just have to be patient. Who could say?

No, not very helpful. Listening to it though, is very different from reading it, as Smith and Jarrard's delivery leaves little doubt that Bungie has something up its sleeve.

We're sure that since both Microsoft and EA are holding their press conferences that day, at least one of them is going to announce something good. And it might even be Bungie related. And it might even have something to do with that little plunger man they've been shoving in our faces all year.

Bungie Podcast: 7/7/08 [Bungie - thanks, Mike!]
