Kenji Eno...wow there is not a name I've heard from in years. The man hated him some Sony and loved Saturn. Quriky doesn't even -start- to detail him, heck the only US gaming mag that bothered to interview him was DieHard GameFan.
I wish the Wii Shop Channel worked on my system. I've been wanting to download Breath of Fire 2 for a while, but every time I boot up the Shop, I just get an empty screen with nothing to click on. =/
@KillerBee: Homebrew Channel, but I recently TRIED to remove the custom firmware because I have no use for it and frankly would rather have the capacity to download games from the VC than play the two or three import-only Wii games that exist.
@KillerBee: So even if you get rid of the custom firmware you can't use it? That's a rip. Nintendo should've just made the damn thing region-free. The DS is. =/
@Archaotic: It will remove everything on your Wii's memory AND delete your linked account on the Store which means that you can't redownload the stuff you've downloaded.
But I've heared that updating you Wii will remove the Homebrew channel and let you access the Store without bricking your Wii if the Wii is softmodded without a modchip.
Something I don't understand in your case is why you can't access the store. Mine is softmodded and I can access it...
@Ben2998: I did update my Wii, that's the weird part. Before I updated it, it wouldn't let me into the channel at all; it'd just error me out of it before it would load. Now that I've updated it, it does the white "Wii" screen with the loading circle for a minute, but after it finishes loading nothing actually appears. It's really weird.
I should note that I can access the other WiiConnect24-infused services like the News and Forecast Channel with my system (which I couldn't do when I was CFW'd), it's JUST the Shop that's fucked up now.
@Archaotic: Call Nintentdo and tell them that it's having problems and you're not sure why, but your "roommate" did something to it. They should tell you how to fix it.
THEORETICALLY, a system restore shouldn't affect your account on the shop channel for the games you've already downloaded (and allow you to redownload them) AS LONG AS a system restore does NOT change your system's base friend code.
Again, the only safe thing I can suggest is to tell Nintendo that some unholy person (probably a PSP owner) corrupted the innocense of your poor, little Wii.
Umm... and don't take offense at that last sentence... I didn't mean it like THAT...
@ChivalRuss: No offense taken. I might just do that; my Wii has some problems booting channels every so often - sometimes when I try to load a VC game, the Shop Channel, or even a disc game, they just WON'T boot. My controllers desync, the system flatlines, and I have to do a hard reset by unplugging the bastard just to get it to turn on again.
I think my Wii got damaged a year or so ago when someone knocked it off the TV table by pulling too hard on the GCN controller cable while playing MK64. =/
I'm currently trying to update it again; the Wii is downloading a new system update now, so we'll see what happens. Hopefully it'll just override the CFW, I really don't need it.
@hazelnut: I'll look into that too, but honestly I don't think I'll be needing to play any import Wii games for a while so I probably don't need the CFW anyways. Thanks for looking it up for me though. If this still doesn't work I'll give it a look.
@Ben2998: Looks like you were right. I re-updated the Wii again, up to 4.1; I got the SD Card menu now, and I can access the Store. FINALLY. Thanks for the help, everyone.
Phantasy Star is one of the best and most influential RPGs of all time, and it is clearly the best 8-bit RPG ever. From its graphics (much better than 8-bit rivals) to its scope (3 different planets), to its story line (engaging and actually makes sense) to its gameplay (fast battle sequences, good battle system).
The only thing about the game that can be controversial is its 3-D dungeons and tough learning curve (you need to grind for about 30 minutes before you can explore). I always like the dungeons, and have wonderful memories of pulling out the graph paper and learning how to beat the dungeon. You get the sense of actually exploration, you get atmosphere, and you get the sense of accomplishment unavailable in other RPGs of the time.
PSIV may be better now, but judged against it's own time, PS is the best of the lot because none of its contemporaries even came close.
In my opinion, the Wii version is a pass considering you can get Phantasy Star I-IV in the Sonic's Genesis Ultimate Collection. Personally I would have rather seen 'Miracle Warriors: Seal of the Dark Lord' released on the VC instead.
@LAGamer: That was still the first true RPG released in the US on console as far as I knew. Way befoer Dragon Warrior hit the NES and was far superior too. Still wasn't as good as the greatness that was the original PS though. Best 8-bit game period.
Ah, Phantasy Star. The first RPG I ever beat. I waited to buy it back in 89, because it cost a crazy 69.99 at the time. So i waited till it dropped to 49.99 in 1990. Wonderful game at the time. Playing it today takes me back.
@Orionsaint: Did you ever try Miracle Warriors, also for the SMS, it was inferior in every way to Phantasy Star, but very very good for its time, and I still enjoy it now, although that may well be rose tinted glasses
@LAGamer: me too.. how long did it take you to find the last dungeon... stupid riddle.. if only i had paid attention to jasons strides being twice that of a ordinary man
@someone_else: This also took me a long time to figure out. I love the game, but the problem with it was that it was not nearly as suited to the SMS hardware as PS was...it had a dated look even in its time. That's not to say it wasn't good, but it wasn't as cutting edge...on the SMS at least.
I just got my Genesis (with Power Base Converter) hooked up again, so I'm going to pass on downloading Phantasy Star. Good to see that they actually drop something worthwhile every once in a while on Virtual Console, though. It's far and few in between, unfortunately.
@IamTheS: I also have the Power Base Converter; since it doesn't properly fit on a Genny 2 (which was the only one I had at the time and I had found the PBC used for 4.99 at (then) Electronics Boutique), I opened the PBC up to see where all the components were, then proceeded to hacksaw the back of it so it WOULD fit properly.
Worked like a charm (and still works whenever I get the hankering for some Master System action).
@relic1980: The Power Base converter was indeed official, it was available at the Genesis launch. It didn't play f-16 fighting Falcon (ironic, since it was an SMS game I had) and there was a dozen or so games it played, but required original SMS controllers, the Genesis controllers wouldn't work properly with them. In looking back on it, it was probably one of the first if not the first emulation issue.
dude, DSiWare is seriously letting me down. I don't want 200 revisions of brain age and a million art style puzzlers, followed by more puzzlers. more racing, platformers, how about that shmup that japan is getting? a little more of that, please?
@(Plant) soulsiphon: While it's unfortunate that DSiWare hasn't had anything as solid as Lost Winds or the Bit.Trip games, I won't stand for you putting down the Art Style games. I won't. You can't ask anything more from a small puzzle game.
@Noyse: Amen to that.. I honestly think PSIV is the best JRPG ever,
The battle system was perfect, it had macros, you could combine attacks for some awesome combos
PSIV also had so many nods to the previos games,
It has great replayability and amazing side missions,
Plus the best part was the amazing manga style "cut scenes" the were better than anything else in the 16bit era and only bettered by FFVIII in the 32 bit (as much as I love VII and IX they did not really cut it in terms of cutscenes or FMV)
Phantasy Star III isn't better than anything. In fact it's easily one of the worst games in the series and one of the worst RPGs of that era. I say fact, but a lot of people agree with that sentiment and in retrospect everyone realised they had made a mistake calling that game Phantasy Star.
@AlucardsQuest: I'm glad in retrospect I wasn't the only one who thought so. All my friends at the time ran out to buy it and I got Might & Magic 2 for Genesis instead. Within a week they were all dropping PS3 to get their own M&M.
I have a DS lite and I am embarrassed and ashamed to see download games on DSI are this bad it looks like a crappy phone game from 2002, Its good thing I didn't get a DSI and stay with a DS Lite
