This is definitely a solid title with a few drawbacks. First of all, the train sections can be boring at times. It's nicely broken up by some of the sidequests and enemy encounters, but when you've done the majority of the sidequests, it's just boring as hell. The warp points do a decent job of speeding things up, but near the end of the game, I just want to get it over with, not because I'm bored and want to finish the game, but because the story and the dungeons so fun to play that I feel like I'm wasting time while I'm barreling across the countryside.
Some of the panflute segments are a chore, too. It's a fun concept, but it was a little annoying playing some of the songs where the notes are separated.
On the whole, I'm more than pleased with the investment I made with Spirit Tracks. The dungeons are fun as hell (especially the one where you truly feel like Indiana Jones) and the boss battles are top-notch. As always, the sidequests and customization aspects of this game, as in Phantom Hourglass, will keep you playing well after the main quest is done. Too bad it doesn't do anything overly exciting to pull new players in.
Bottom line:
If you're a Zelda fan and you enjoyed Phantom Hourglass, this is a must play, but if you've never particularly been a fan of the franchise, it's probably not for you. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone that hasn't tried the first game, though.
Strangely, it's hard to get excited about new Zelda games. All the games in the series are great, or at least competent, but as a result, the games no longer interest me because they're just repeating themes that I've already enjoyed over and over. I'm sure Spirit Tracks is a good game, but is it worth buying if you've already played the Zelda series to death? Probably not.
@Rachel Fogg: The difference is that Nintendo didn't WORK on the cdi games in any way. So it's not comparable by any reasonable person to the regular Zelda series which is actually made by Nintendo.
I was very surprised by Spirit Tracks- because it's actually good. They took most of the complaints from PH, such as having to re-play the Ocean King temple 5000 times and the slow sailing parts (which I liked), and replaced them with a much better temple system (you don't acutally have to replay the previous levels unless you want to!), and somehow, a funner, though slower, method of travel.
The weapons selection this time around, as usual, includes the favorites as well as some new treats (spoiler free: the S&M weapon rocks).
But, still think using the stylus is a mistake. It's one of those games, like many others on the Wii and DS, where they try to use the gimmick of the system for all control, but the margin of error involved with the gimmick just shows you how inadequate it actually is (for those of us who desire total control). I love it when Nintendo makes a product that is defeatist.
I'd say it's a buy for any DS owner, but I don't really suppose it has much replay value for the majority. There are a ton of things to collect and side missions, but I figure that most of them are just way to tedious to actually care about. Anyone still reading? Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn.
@denki: The stylus, blowing into the mic, closing the DS, ect are all used in order to differenciate the handheld version to the console version. It gives some form of uniqueness in terms of "this can only be played on the DS" without it feeking like "just another Zelda game."
Of course though, most fans just want another Zelda game, so you're not wrong either :/
@Goldwings - Wants a Part-time Santa Gig :D:
Of course, to validate that further they would have to be appreciated/an improvement/not easily replaced with other options.
Which unfortunately, it doesn't quite come through on.
Damnit... I'm a typical Zelda fan: plays Zelda by themselves unless the completionist in them forces 3 unwilling people to help with 4 Swords, doesn't use FAQs unless trying to find that last heart piece, has all the games in some form or another, orders Ocarinas online, buys green tunics, discusses timelines online... wait. Well, I'm a Zelda fan save for the last three. -_- Zelda is a hard sell for most of my friends. Can't convince any of them to love Zelda without Blackmail, extortion, bribery, or coercion. :D Good Luck to the people who actually win.
Holy smokes, congrats to the lucky winner. Why am I tossing out a congratulations already? Because I am not the biggest Zelda fan and by no means wish to participate. So happy day to you lucky future winner!
Now if this was a prize pack for, um, Bayonetta you might have some competition.
Wow, that's... unconventional. I'm probably one of the top five Zelda fans that regularly visit Kotaku (two Zelda walls in my house, Zelda tattoo, etc.), but having to recruit a bunch of people... I just can't imagine how I would get a large number of people in one place at the same time. They'd either have to be random people already there who are willing to play along, or... I don't even know. Most people would find doing this really inconvenient, and I don't have a big enough network of friends in the area I live...
I always find it interesting that a large proportion of American commentators think this is too much work, whereas a lot of us Europeans (UK here) think it would be just up our street.
We love doing daft things like this. Give us chance for a change guys!
@plasticmouse: It's normally a legality issue more than anything, giving away contest prizes to people in other countries can come back to bite the people running the contest if they don't follow every letter of the law for that region.

Worth playing mostly because its Zelda.

You mean the Phillps CDi games weren't bad? Surely you jest Mr, Fahey? ;)

But didn't Ninty team up with Phillps to make those games, so technically they are-
:knocked out by flying pig:

When it sucked, Ninty took them back and the community as a whole decided to just..drop the whole affair.
Nevertheless, Phillps' 'version' of Zelda is still part of the lore of Zelda, albeit an embarrassing part...but part nonetheless. LOL!

Really wierd choice for an advert style

I only know a handful now that could be considered Zelda fans. Yet, how do you get them to really help you without letting them now the reward.
Person 1: So did we win?
Person 2: Yeah, when will we get our DSi's!
Me: *tucks DSi deeper in pocket*
Person 3: Well?!
