<![CDATA[ First Look At Tekken Movie Costume ]]> Another game, another movie adaptation! Here's a first look at the upcoming Tekken movie. No, better yet, a look at an actor in the movie wearing his movie costume! That's world champ martial arts fighter Cung Le as Marshall Law in his Marshal Law garb. The movie is being directed by Marked for Death director Dwight H. Little and stars former boy band singer Luke Goss as Steve Fox, Kill Bill's Chiaki Kuriyama as Ling Xiaoyu and some other people as other characters.

<![CDATA[ Tekken 6 Not Coming to American Arcades ]]> Right now, the arcade version of Tekken 6 is in loads of places, like NOT AMERICA and NOT AMERICA. Apparently, it's going to stay that way! While the game is most certainly coming to American consoles, it seems that it will not be coming to American arcades. Nothing has been officially announced, but Tekken site SD Tekken points out various reasons why the game won't be coming to American arcades, including the fact that Namco USA no longer has an arcade division and that the US arcade scene is pretty much, well, dead. Still, the cabinets are being imported. So far, Tekken 6 is playable at an arcade in Houston. Americans willing to mingle with Canadians will be happy to find the game in arcades north of the border.

<![CDATA[ Former Boy Band Member in Tekken Movie ]]> That long-in-development-hell Tekken lugs closers to the big screen. The movie version has been kicked around Hollywood since 2002 with Sony Pictures' Screen Gems now holding the distribution rights. Back in October, Variety reported that Free Willy 2 director Dwight Little (yeah, we know) would be helming the forthcoming project. Now, apparently it has at least one actor. On the official page of former boy band member Luke Goss, the admin posted that Goss would be taking on the role of Brit Tekken 4 fighter, Steve Fox. After his band Bros broke up, Goss (above, with twin brother) went on to appear in flicks like Blade II and Hellboy 2. Let's hope the producers can work fringe leather vests, acid washed jeans and keyboard playing into the flick.

Oh, for those not familiar with Bros, hit the jump for a special treat:

Yes, this guy is gonna be in Tekken and Tekken will somehow be better. If this movie doesn't have a musical number, we will be so disappointed.

<![CDATA[ Tekken Movie Details Emerge ]]> tekkendetails.jpgFirst comes the movie poster, and then come the movie details. Movie news site IESB has gotten their hands on the audition slides from Tekken, and have poured over them distilling pertinent info for our reading enjoyment. Audition slides are key scenes from the movie used to see how role hopefuls react in those situations. We discover that Jin is a smuggler and junkie who is matched against Marshall Law in the tournament. Bryan Fury is being blackmailed by Kazuya, who at some point in the film locks up his dad, forcing Jin to try and save him. At some point the assembled fighters, listed as Marduk, Phoenix, Anna, Nina, Christie, Raven, Gorgo (Eddy!), Fury, Dragunov and Jin, stage an escape from the Mishima complex, which results in the death of a fighter. Who? No clue, and quite honestly this info could all change by the time the actual movie comes out, but an interesting read nonetheless.

<![CDATA[ Itagaki Scoffs at Heavenly Sword ]]> Beside booze and boob physics, Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki doesn't like much of anything! Tekken he hates so hard. And the upcoming PS3 title Heavenly Sword? Meh! The game features "Hero Sequences" in which players have to input particular commands to proceed through a Dragon's Liar-esque cinematic event. In the latest Electronic Gaming Monthly, Itagaki offers his two cents:

I've never played a good game where the developers put a big icon of the button you're supposed to press onscreen... I look at Heavenly Sword and it seems really half-assed, because it's asking you to do all these button-timing sequences but you are not getting much payoff from it.

Snap! Heavenly Sword producer Kyle Shubel's answer to those criticisms?

My response to Mr. Itagaki would be that the intent of the Hero sequences is to empower the player to experience events that would be nearly impossible to play in a natural platforming state... for example, making the player run down ropes, leaping from rope to rope as they're being cut from underneath you, all while dodging other objects — that would be a frustrating experience to 99 percent of our users if we were to force them to do that manually.
Itagaki is that 1 percent. He's not like us mortals, you know. He wears sunglasses when he sleeps and bathes.

Thanks Christian!

<![CDATA[ Itagaki - Tekken Sucks ]]> istagakimcwhertor.jpgNormally when we have a quote to share with you from an industry personality we summarize their comment humorously in the title and then give you the actual wording in the main body of the post. Not so this time. Joystiq caught up to Dead or Alive creator and paragon of coolness Tomonobu Itagaki at the recent Championship Gaming Series North American World Series Final, where they asked him if he was looking forward to Tekken 6.
Tekken sucks. I don't know what you're talking about.
The black leather jacket and sunglasses aren't just for show. Itagaki is a bad ass rebel. You'd never hear Yuji Naka say, "Yo, fuck Mario," even though I would personally give him $100 just to get it on tape. The rest of the interview is pretty tame, though he does hint at the possibility of a Wii title down the line.
We're doing a lot of research, that's about all I can say right now. Although, to add on that note, my kids have been saying they want a game for the Wii. To tell you the truth, Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword, that's because my kids were asking for one of my titles to be on the DS.
The Wii could certainly use a dose of Itagaki's trademark family friendly fare.

<![CDATA[ Live Action Tekken Short Film In Progress ]]>

Atlanta based Shadow Motion Pictures, creators of that Devil May Cry fan film currently in post production, are also readying a live action Tekken film. The short, titled Tekken: King of Iron Fist, is similarly unauthorized and will be a martial arts packed labor of love from director R.L. Scott.

He describes the short film's plot on his Myspace blog:

The story takes place after the defeat of Jinpachi Mishima at the hands of Jin Kazama. Jin becomes the new ruler of the Mishima Zaibatsu Corporation. along with that power he inherets it's problems. namely... the vow of revenge set forth by Bryan. A bloody battle ensues with a shocking end you wont want to miss.

Don't expect Hollywood level production values, but uberfans of the game should keep their eyes on the project to see how it all turns out. Head to Twitch for the first promo pics of the decidedly less bulky Jin Kazama and Bryan Fury looking very menacing.

<![CDATA[ Tekken Girls Get Wet And Naked in Maxim ]]>

Last week, Eliza verbally body slammed Playboy's editor over their upcoming feature about hot, naked girls in gaming... girls no one had ever heard of. Playboy claimed that "if you feel these women are not prominent enough in their games, that's an issue for the developers who should be creating more strong roles for women." Eliza's response — in which she rattled off dozens of names of well-known female game characters who re-affirmed positive gender ideals — can only be described as a Mortal Kombat style fatality. Scott's offal-coated pelvis hangs above Eliza's mantle, connected to the spine she deftly ripped out of his back.

We thought the battle for prominent, progressive female role models in games had been won. But then, today, we catch word that maxim has hired a bunch of models to dress up as Tekken models, then stand under cold flowing water and do karate kicks in miniskirts and brightly colored panties.

Did you hear that? That was the audible pop of Eliza's head flying apart in a puff of metallic blue hair and overly developed gray matter as the expanding kettle of her gamer feminism reached a boiling point, then exploded.

<![CDATA[ Games of the Week: Can't Find Exit Edition ]]> tekken_dr_psp.jpgHey! Tekken is coming out for the PSP. That's as exciting as it's going to get. Here's what's new and notable for the week of July 23, minus the usual licensed crap.

Tekken: Dark Resurrection (PSP)
The portable port of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is reviewing quite well, thank you. New characters, same proven Tekken gameplay. The fighting game PSP owners have been waiting for.

Painkiller: Hell Wars (Xbox)
The Xbox gets a bit of life support with this Xbox version of the hellacious FPS. Hot Havok based physics, too.

Civilization IV: Warlords (PC)
I'm not a Civ player, so let's let the marketing types take over: "New civilizations, leaders, units, and wonders that will offer even more fun and exciting ways for players to expand their civilization's military power as they strive for world domination."

CivCity: Rome (PC)
Cut from the official site: "An innovative city builder inspired by the world of Sid Meier's Civilization, and created by a collaboration between Firefly Studios and Firaxis Games, invites players to shift focus from building a multi-city empire and zoom-in on the great cities of the Roman Empire, culminating in Rome itself!"

Alright kids, I'm gonna see if I can hunt down a cheap copy of Exit and work my way through Half-Life 2 Episode I. What are you picking up this week?
