But while Smash-Up brings a bit of nostalgia and doesn't build any walls between generations of Ninja Turtles fans
Does it, though? I mean, reading the comments here, I get the impression that it's less nostalgic for those of us that were kids in the 80s, and it seems to be building walls between fans of the 80s series and fans of the 00s series.
@shimage:
I grew up in the 80's, and I totally got over the original TMNT animated series. However, I own the first five seasons of the new series on DVD, as well as the CGI movie.
You unlock all but four character by playing story mode... just pick them at the end. Was the reviewer only picking the treasure chest rewards? Pick one of the busts over them and the reward screen.
"the sheer notion of mashing together all that is Ninja Turtle into one game smacks of the same decision making behind cramming all of Nintendo's beloved characters into Brawl."
Uh, no, it doesn't. In fact, they're very different.
One includes all the characters from 1 franchise. The other includes all the characters of MANY (1) franchises. Otherwise street fighter, naruto games, bleach games, mvc, etc. all smack "of the same decision making behind cramming all of Nintendo's beloved characters into Brawl"

@Methusalah: The new series was more faithful to the original material.
As I've said in previous articles about TMNT, despite the teary eyed nostalgia for the '88 cartoon, it really stands as an odd one out among the various different TMNT universes.
Geez, it was a pain in the rear enough to unlock characters in smash bros if you didn't like the subspace emissary. If it's even worse here, I won't even bother renting.
@RockyRan: What really grinds my gears is that major news outlets (Kotaku, IGN) aren't even mentioning that fact in their reviews. I imagine there will be a lot of pissed off consumers who read said reviews and buy the game, only to find out that 3 out of the 16 characters aren't even from the TMNT franchise.
@Here's Some Weapons: Yeah, they misled fans. I LOVE Ninja turtles, A lot, but classic ninja turtles. None of that is here because Ubisoft didn't want to touch the licensing on the old stuff.
@Demonbird: Old Turtles was HORRIBLE anyway. I don't see why it's that big of a deal. I guess they had Bebop and Rocksteady, but they probably wouldn't be great characters for the game. There's still Shredder, and an utrom which is pretty much Krang.
@Kamen Rider Gatack:
Let me guess, weren't around or into ninja turtles in its prime?
First of all, there were TONS of original turtles cartoon characters that could have made it in.
TONS more from the comic series as well,
Mirage and Archie.
Slash
Tokka
Razarr
Wingnut
Leatherhead
Krang
Rocksteady
Bebop
Usagi Yojimbo
Rat King
Baxter Stockman
Mona Lisa
@Here's Some Weapons:
Probably, and they had included skins for older designs. [en.wikipedia.org]
There are 154 characters on this list. Not all of them are fighters, but most of them are.
I'm not sure any of them are in this game.
@Demonbird: I was, I grew up with the turtles. I watched the original series as a kid and watched the 2k3 series as it was airing. When they first started releasing the seasons of the old cartoon on DVD, I bit right away and it definitely was not as awesome as I remembered. Well, the intro was still beautifully animated but that was about it. The old series was nonsensical garbage and I know it was a kids show, but it was just bad. The 2k3 series on the other hand followed the actual comics and had an on-going story, as well as consistent animation and was entertaining even if you weren't a kid.
@Kamen Rider Gatack:
We weren't really debating the quality of a show designed to sell toys were we?
I wa sjust saying that classic, pre 2003 turtles, which was A LOT more than the cartoon, had a hell of a lot more that could have contributed to this game than Bebop, Rocksteady, and krang.
@Kamen Rider Gatack:
That alone would double the games roster.
Plus classic skins.
Plus characters I'm inevitably forgetting that are on this list [en.wikipedia.org]
Like man ray
Or variants like super shredder.
@Kamen Rider Gatack: No matter which version of the show you prefer, the original 80's cartoon has a huge fan base, and Ubisoft has been marketing to this particular group of people for months (look at the game's logo, even!), claiming that this game would be a celebration of 25 years of Turtles. They absolutely promised it would include elements from the old show, and they completely failed to deliver on this promise. One's own personal show preference doesn't change this.
@Here's Some Weapons: Hell, this review didn't even touch on the gameplay of the title, a far more glaring omission to me, particularly in a fighter. I've learned next to nothing about Smash-Up other than how it relates to one person's sense of nostalgia. :/
@tinky XIII: But why? It's not like Usagi being butchered in the old cartoon made the actual UY comics any worse. I just think it'd be a neat touch to the game (not to mention more character variety!) if he was in there. But I'm not going to get it, so there we go.
@Pombar: All I ask for in this game is Usagi Yojimbo and the Cowboys of Moo Mesa.
We need more games where ninja turtles that behead their enemies, honourable samurai rabbits, and gun blazing cows are allowed free to roam and smash each other.
@Showmeyomoves!: I hope they have that slutty girl April works with. I can't remember her name, but even as a kid, it struck me as odd how she hit on every single guy she came across.

There aren't any.
There are 13 characters from the new TMNT show (and the 2007 movie), and there are THREE Raving Rabbids.
Despite a few unlockable costumes that look really cool, I'm boycotting the game in response to Ubisoft completely misleading fans of the old cartoon.

One of the rabbids has Sam Fisher headgear, meaning Ubisoft pulled a marketing plug-in within ANOTHER marketing plug-in!
Man, Ubi's getting almost as good as EA in terms of shameless advertising!

How can you make a fake Smash Bros without unlockable characters? That's like a fistfight without brass knuckles or anchovies without caramel sauce.
