<![CDATA[ Protest Over Army Combat Sim Dropped ]]> Virtual Army Experience, a Humvee-sized simulation in which participants zip around through the desert with machine guns shootin' terrists.

The Ohio chapter of Veterans for Peace weren't happy with the fact that kids as young as 13 were said to be playing the game elsewhere, if not targeted by recruiters outright. The group had begun a letter writing campaign asking the Army not to bring the simulator to shows and expos in Ohio. So the Army announced that it will limit the game to people 17 years and older at the Cleveland National Air Show this weekend.

The Virtual Army Experience puts "players" in the Humvee in front of a wrap-around screen where the game is projected. They fire at life-size foes using simulated machine guns fitted with lasers.

You know who else wishes a combat simulator had an age restriction? The Ko-Dan. Alex Rogan was, like, 16 wasn't he? "It's inappropriate and a little offensive that Earth teens were trained to destroy our armada," said Xur, from his exile.

<![CDATA[ S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky Delayed and Recalled ]]> Shacknews got confirmation that S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, for the PC, faces a delay of "a few days" after its revised drop date of Sept. 5 but, more importantly, there is a recall in effect for any copies of the game that have already shipped to North American retailers. This doesn't affect the game's European release date (also Sept. 5).

Publisher Deep Silver had to recall the copies because of a printing error that left the game distributed without CD keys (that detail comes via Blue's News forums, which also have claims that some retailers are listing the game's new release as Sept. 15).

Now, obvious question, WTF about getting it via Steam? Hrm. Steam says it's available Sept. 6 — think rationally, what are the odds something goes out digitally before its commercial release? So consider that a moving target date that only means "not Sept. 5."

In the end, it's some bona fide facepalm when a game is delayed a second time (original date was supposed to be Friday) and then called back because of a printing error.

<![CDATA[ David Perry's Keynote: Sony Will Never Make Money on the PS3 ]]> Dontcha just love it when top execs start commenting on someone else's financials? Opinionated Acclaim chief David Perry ain't above it, in fact he used his keynote address at the Games Convention Developer's Conference to declare that Sony will never make real dough off the PlayStation 3, 10-year plan or no.

"Because of the cost of making the PlayStation 3 and because they sold it at a loss, Sony basically has pretty much no chance of making money on the PS3, because it's lost more money than they made during the entire peak of the PlayStation 2 — it's not going to happen again for Sony."

He went on to say that a PlayStation 4 coming out in the next eight or so years would be a bad idea. "If they release the PlayStation 4 and have an even more expensive console and raise the cost of games by ten dollars, that would not be good."

Thus, Perry said, this 10-year-plan for the PS3 is a long-term bid to wring out as much money to pay for the console's development, since the pricing and sales so far haven't done it. "This is going to force them to make the PS3 last longer and they're kind of positioning to do that," he said.

<![CDATA[ Hellgate, Mythos Development Picked Up By Korean Publisher ]]> So Flagship (and Hellgate) are sunk, and Mythos has been canned along with them, right? Not necessarily! According to some job postings over on Gamasutra and DICE.com, Korean publisher T3 is opening a development studio in San Francisco, and will continue work on both titles. Seems random, but T3 own a controlling stake in HanbitSoft, Hellgate's Korean publisher, and the company at the centre of a tussle over ownership of the game as Flagship was going down. A tussle they seem to be well on the way to winning. The news probably won't matter to Hellgate players since, outside of Korea, there really aren't any left, but it's good news for Mythos fans.

<![CDATA[ Mega Man 9's Retro Art Stylings ]]> Everyone who visited Capcom's booth at E3 last week were treated to a peek at a glorious retro Mega Man t-shirt. The shirt reflects the decision Capcom made to turn Mega Man 9 into an "impossible hard" 8-bit revival of the franchise.

The marketing group decided that since the game was going to look like it came from 1987 they whole marketing campaign should too. So they called up I Am 8-bit artist Gerald de Jesus and had him whip up a truly fantastic bit of fantasy Mega Man art for the fabled shirt.

Only four of the shirts were created for Inafune and Takeshita to wear during last week's show. The good news? Capcom promises to start selling the shirts on their site soon.

<![CDATA[ Super Chuck Norris Bros. — Wait, This is *Real*? ]]>
This is is a story in two parts. The first is how insanely hilarious is that video above. Every time I think of Chuck Norris, I think of Joe Bob Briggs and his tour de force review of Delta Force 2, and that game above deserves its own Joe Bob-style rundown: No breasts. No blood. No mushrooms. One hundred and four dead bodies. Shotgun fu. Chainsaw fu. Flamethrower fu. Shotgunned Koopa. Smoldering Koopa. Flying Goomba. Flattened Goomba. Exploding Flag. Exploding Castle. Exploding coin box. Exploding bricks. Exploding start screen. Gratuitous defoliation. Gratuitous dialog boxes. Drive-In Academy Award nominations for visual effects for loss of entire raster lines due to overwhelming awesome violence. Four stars. Kotaku says check it out.

I ran this by my Dad, also a Joe Bob fan, and he agreed this had to go up pronto: "The commenters will put up their own Chuck Norris facts too," Dad said. "Like: Chuck Norris finished The Bourne Conspiracy."

Zing!

OK, part two. This all looked a little too complex for me to think it was simply a well done movie. And lo and freaking behold, I think I'm right. As this video went around this week, Ripten found that there is indeed a Super Chuck Norris Bros. demo for the PC. And goddamn if I don't feel like buying a copy of Windows just to play this sucker. Ripten vouches that the download is virus free. Someone grab it and tell me what I'm missing.

<![CDATA[ The Magical Disappearing Battlefield: Bad Company Stats ]]> Battlefield: Bad Company players around the world just about had a heart attack last night as they logged onto the game to discover their ranks, unlocks, and medals had all been completely reset. Purchasers of the Gold Edition of the game even found that their five very special guns they got for paying an extra $10 had disappeared. Oh no! What are we to do when our stats are erased!?

In the words of the greatest literary mind of our time, don't panic.

My stats were down last night as well, and when I logged into the game just a half hour ago, everything was back to normal. This was an issue that occured on a regular basis with Battlefield 2, and we can probably assume that it will happen on and off with Bad Company as well. The servers go down, and when they come back up it takes time for all of the stats to return. You didn't really think EA DICE would screw up that big, did you?

<![CDATA[ Nintendo Responds To Song Swiping Lawsuit ]]> Earlier this month, Nintendo of America was on the receiving end of a lawsuit from Hollywood production company Morgan Creek Productions, which alleged copyright infringement over the use of music from the movie True Romance in a TV spot for GameCube game Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

The suit was quickly withdrawn by Morgan Creek... mysteriously!

It's really not that mysterious. According to a statement from Nintendo, the whole thing has been settled, with ad agency Leo Burnett reminding Morgan Creek that it had already entered into a music licensing agreement with the production company. Looks like all that was required was a "Sorry 'bout that!" The full statement follows.

A lawsuit filed by Morgan Creek Productions, Inc. against Nintendo of America was recently dismissed. The lawsuit alleged copyright infringement by Nintendo for its use of the song "You're So Cool" in a Nintendo GameCube television commercial produced by advertising agency Leo Burnett USA, Inc. In response to the lawsuit, Leo Burnett provided Morgan Creek Productions with a copy of a music license entered into between Leo Burnett USA, on behalf of Nintendo of America and Morgan Creek, for licensing of the song. The lawsuit was dismissed by Morgan Creek Productions the following day.

Excellent. Looks like nobody got hurt and the Nintendo war chest looking like it didn't lose a dime.

<![CDATA[ Konami: All Music Game Instruments Should Be Compatible ]]> My frizzy-haired colleague Patrick Klepek may be hanging out with his brother on the Warped Tour right now, but he also managed to break down the competition between all the major music-based video games for MTV News today. It's always a tricky topic for us because some people assume we're biased. Trust me, we steer clear of insider info.

Klepek reports that Konami, makers of the upcoming Rock Revolution do not believe in proprietary peripherals.

"Compatibility is a big issue for music games," Konami Digital Entertainment associate producer Keith Matejka told MTV News. "Peripherals are expensive for the user and they are expensive to produce. The existing peripherals all deliver only a slightly different gameplay experience. Different teams have varying perspectives on what should be compatible with each game. I think all guitar- and drum-based games need to be compatible with each other to some level."

More Klepek goodness at the link, including some counter-arguments about why compatibility doesn't make sense for the big publishers.

Side note: He reported in just to me that they don't have real showers on the Warped Tour. Whoops! Now, I guess he's reported that to all of you as well.

<![CDATA[ Pac-Man T-Shirt Spreads The Word ]]> Would it be a Friday without somebody posting a picture of a t-shirt? Of course it would. Not even Pac-Man himself has the power to warp time and space, but he might just have the power...to move you. Kotakuite Annissa spotted this Pac-Man-inspired t-shirt in a rather peculiar place.

After being dragged into one of the local Christian books stores by a relative I spotted this gem of a shirt. Torn between horror and facination I ended up snapping a few photos of it. These two are the only ones that turned out well enough for you to actually read the text under Blinky, Inky, and Clyde.

I snagged the best of the two pictures, but in case you still can't read it, the quote is "But I tell you who hear me, love your enemies, do good to those that hate you. - Luke 6:27". I've been checking chat logs all morning but still can't see where Luke said that. Seems a bit out of character really. I'll follow up with him later.

<![CDATA[ Korean MMO Gets Unreal Engine 3 License ]]> T-Entertainment, creators of Korean massively multiplayer online role-playing games Laghaim and Last Chaos, licensed the Unreal Engine 3 for an upcoming MMO codenamed L2, the company announced today.

“We have a team of seasoned professionals devoted to L2 project, and we are confident that by integrating our expertise and Unreal Engine 3’s excellent performance, L2 will be a top-tier MMORPG that fascinates gamers all around the world,” said John Hong, CTO of T-Entertainment.

“T-Entertainment is a well-diversified entertainment company that is poised to launch yet another successful MMORPG worldwide,” said Jay Wilbur, vice president of Epic Games. “We are constantly improving the Unreal Engine, and look forward to providing them with cutting-edge game development tools and technology for many months to come.”

The company describes their upcoming PC game as a "futuristic fantasy with a taste of space opera" and say they're shooting for a worldwide release in 2010.

T-Entertainment Licenses Unreal Engine 3

SEOUL, KOREA – June 16, 2008 – Seoul-based T-Entertainment today announced that it has licensed Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 for an upcoming project codenamed L2, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).

While staying true to the roots of T-Entertainment’s previous MMORPGs, Laghaim and Last Chaos, L2 draws on elements from role-playing (RPG) and real-time strategy (RTS) games, and can be described as “futuristic fantasy with a taste of space opera.” L2 is being developed for PC, and is scheduled for a worldwide release in 2010.

Game developers and publishers worldwide have licensed Unreal Engine 3 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Since Epic has shipped its internal titles across all supported platforms, the engine's content pipeline and technical capabilities have achieved unprecedented levels of maturity and accessibility. These advancements, combined with the continual incorporation of top quality middleware via Epic's Integrated Partners Program, has primed Unreal Engine 3 as the leading offering for cross-platform game development. Through this licensing agreement, T-Entertainment will be able to take advantage of the engine’s latest enhancements, including advanced character lighting, ambient occlusion, and dynamic fluid surfaces.

<![CDATA[ Take-Two Ponders Entering The Music Game Genre ]]>
Would Take-Two ever consider setting Rockstar loose on the music game genre? Last night, during Take-Two's Q1 financial results call, Board chairman Strauss Zelnick addressed an analyst who asked exactly that, "given Rockstar's nature." I guess he meant, "as rockstars"?

Zelnick's answer? "Possibly," but Zelnick said there's nothing currently in Take-Two's schedule that fits that bill. For his part, Zelnick is waiting to see how much staying power the trend has, and whether to define it as a "music genre" or a "rhythm genre."

Zelnick said such considerations are "terribly important when you invest in AAA properties that you expect people to play for over 20 hours."

Zelnick has good reason to demonstrate his restraint to his investors, of course - right now his mandate is to prove that they're better off sticking with his guiding hand than with EA's.

<![CDATA[ The Tactile Side of Games ]]> mahjongtiles.jpg Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of having a mahjong addict neighbor can attest to the double-edged sword that is traditional table games: the sensation of having smooth and cool tiles in your hand can be a pleasurable one, but damn it all if that incessant shuffling isn't irritating after hours and hours of it into the wee hours. Still, it's the positives of the sense of touch that Ian Bogost picks up on in his latest Gamasutra column. Using the classic game of Go as a starting point and ending with Rez, he takes a look at what games can do — and maybe should do — to enhance the tactile pleasure of playing:

... the potential is great. We craft every aspect of videogame worlds in excruciating detail: the marbled, diffracted surfaces of water, the filthy grit of alleyways, the splintered grain of bombed-out church rafters.

We render the visual and aural aspects of these worlds in startling vividness and at great expense. But those worlds remain imprisoned behind the glass of our televisions and our monitors. Rez shows us that as far as texture is concerned, games can be as much like food as they are like film.

He's clearly not advocating that all games can — or should — be Rez, but it's just another aspect we should be paying attention to. And, unlike a lot of ideas that get floated about improving the gamer-game interaction, ramping up the tactile factor when warranted seems easy enough to do.

Though Take-Two's been trading consistently at or above $26 since April 23rd, it's the highest the share price has been since that week in February when the buyout was initially announced.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter saw that similar February spike as a vote of confidence from the shareholders that the acquisition was likely to go through. This time, though, with the state of the buyout apparently in limbo until May 16th, the climb in stock price looks likely due to a voluminous wave of super-hyperbolic positivity from reviewers regarding the imminent GTA IV.

Stressing that their offer is "full and fair," EA senior VP of corporate development Owen Mahoney recently said that any GTA IV-related spikes in Take-Two's share price would be "a short term event," since he agrees with the analyst opinion that investors have already considered the value of GTA IV.

Neither EA nor Take-Two have yet responded to requests for comment on what, if anything, the elevated share price might signal for the ongoing bid.

There are only one thousand of these, and they were only available for those who pre-ordered at the Nintendo World store in New York City. Nintendo really dropped the ball on promoting this shirt, though. Instead of playing up the fake Miyamoto autograph, it should've totally pumped up the fact that this shirt has a GREEN MIYAMOTO FACE on it. Hit the jump for that!

<![CDATA[ "8-Bit Investigation" Shirt Is Worth Investigating ]]> "8-Bit Investigation" is among the more clever pixel art designs we've seen in some time. A tribute to Sierra's adventure games gone by, the shirt explores the aftermath of one character's graphic (pun definitely intended) fall from a building. From the splattered pixels on the pavement to the pixel puking in the background, it's another one of those almost obnoxiously cute designs that the Threadless community is known for. $20, but I wish it came in other colors than gray.

<![CDATA[ GameStop Sells $7.1 Billion In 2007 ]]> gamestop2007finance.jpg Another year, another record sales figure for the world's largest video game retailer. GameStop has posted their financial results for the fourth quarter of 2007 and the year as a whole, and things are looking damn good for the company. Sales were up 33% in 2007, for a total of $7.1 billion in sales, with net earnings of $288.3 million - a jump of 82%. $189.8 million of those net earnings were for the fourth quarter alone, a result of the completely insane holiday sales season. Riding on these huge numbers, the company expects sales to jump another 19-21% over the next year, driven by strong software releases and the opening of another 575-600 stores. You can hit the jump for the full press release if you'd like to pour over the numbers, but the main point here is that $7.1 billion was definitely not all me, so where are you guys getting all this money? More importantly, can I borrow some? I need to buy some t-shirts.

GameStop Reports Record 2007 Sales and Earnings

2007 Sales and Net Earnings Grow 33% and 82%, respectively

Comparable Store Sales Increase 17.4% for Q4 and 24.7% for the Year

575 to 600 New Stores to be Opened Worldwide in 2008

Strong Growth Planned for 2008 and Long Range Earnings Target Reiterated

GRAPEVINE, Texas—(BUSINESS WIRE)—GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME), the world's largest video game and entertainment software retailer, today reported sales and earnings for the fourth quarter and the fiscal year ended February 2, 2008. The company also issued guidance for fiscal 2008 and an outlook for the year to follow.

GameStop has become the world's fastest growing retailer in the Fortune 500 by several metrics: sales of $7.1 billion for fiscal 2007, an increase of 33% over fiscal 2006; a 24.7% increase in comparable store sales; the opening of 586 new stores; and a 50% increase in operating earnings. Moreover, growth prospects remain favorable for continued rapid expansion in markets in various stages of development throughout the world.

The company continues to develop and identify additional growth opportunities in the more developed video game markets of the US, Canada and Australia, as well as building new stores in virtually all of the more immature markets across Europe. In 2007, GameStop opened 586 new stores worldwide. Operating cash flow funded all of the new openings and also provided a year end cash balance of $857 million.

Fourth Quarter Financial Results

Net earnings were $189.8 million for the 13-week fourth quarter of 2007, as compared to net earnings of $129.8 million for the 14-week fourth quarter of 2006, an increase of 46.2%. Diluted earnings per share were $1.14, compared to $0.81 per diluted share in the prior year quarter.

GameStop sales increased 24.4% to $2,865.6 million in the fourth quarter, in comparison to $2,304.0 million in the prior year quarter. On a comparable store basis, sales increased 17.4% during the fourth quarter. New video game software sales grew 38.4%. The top five selling games during the quarter were Activision's CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE, ROCK BAND from Electronic Arts, ASSASSIN'S CREED by Ubisoft, Nintendo's SUPER MARIO GALAXY, and Activision's GUITAR HERO III.

Full Year Financial Results

Net earnings were $288.3 million for the 52-week fiscal year 2007, including debt retirement costs of $12.6 million ($7.9 million, net of tax benefits), as compared to earnings of $158.3 million for the 53-week fiscal year 2006, an increase of 82.1%. Diluted earnings per share were $1.75 for fiscal 2007, including debt retirement costs of $0.05 per diluted share, as compared to $1.00 per diluted share in fiscal 2006.

R. Richard Fontaine, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, indicated, "Our performance in 2007 was impressive from many perspectives. But what is particularly noteworthy is that 2007 was a transformative year with hardware sales setting records and the installed base of users reaching an all-time high. Likewise, the expanding demographic profile of the video game player has moved this business into the mainstream of entertainment. This will be compounded by a strong 2008 video game title lineup and the value aspect of GameStop's used model that appeals to a broad base of budget conscious consumers.

"Prospects for the 575-600 new store openings in 2008 look very promising even with the current concerns about the US economy. As one of the few American retailers actively seeking many new sites, GameStop is positioned to secure better locations with more advantageous lease terms and is more frequently being viewed as a critical brand to anchor strip centers," concluded Fontaine.

Business Outlook

For fiscal 2008 (the 52-week year ending January 31, 2009), sales are projected to grow between 19.0% and 21.0%, with comparable store sales ranging from +10.0% to +12.0%, driven by a strong lineup of video game title releases across all platforms. Diluted earnings per share for the full year are expected to range from $2.25 to $2.34, an increase of between 25% and 30% over fiscal 2007. GameStop expects to open between 575 and 600 stores worldwide in fiscal 2008.

For the first quarter of fiscal 2008, the company expects comparable store sales to range from +24.0% to +25.0%, led by continued demand for all console and handheld systems as well as a strong slate of new video game releases, such as Nintendo's SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL for the Wii, Capcom's DEVIL MAY CRY 4 and GRAND THEFT AUTO IV from Take Two Interactive. Diluted earnings per share are expected to range from $0.32 to $0.33. This compares to earnings per share of $0.15 in the first quarter of 2007.

Looking beyond 2008, GameStop currently expects earnings per share to grow at least 25% in fiscal 2009 (the year ending January 2010) based on several key factors, including: the company's growing worldwide retail footprint, the company's ongoing cash generation, the continued expansion of the video game industry, and the broadening consumer base.

Note that guidance does not include debt retirement costs.

<![CDATA[ Shareholder Sues Take-Two ]]> t2logo.JPG A Take-Two shareholder is suing the company, claiming that the board's rejection of an an undisclosed acquisition offer from EA was motivated by a desire to increase what its executives would be paid if the company were sold.

The lawsuit was filed by Prickett, Jones & Elliott on behalf of Take-Two shareholder Patrick Solomon on Friday in Delaware Chancery Court and names Take-Two Executive Chairman Strauss Zelnick and Chief Executive Benjamin Feder, who are partners of investment company ZelnickMedia.

The suit centers around the Feb. 15 decision to increase ZelnickMedia's management fees and bonuses to $16.5 million, from $3.8 million, in the event the company were sold.

This comes a day after major shareholders in the company started dumping stock... but to who? And the same day that Take-Two announced a provision for employees if they were to be fired in the case of a buy-out.

Oh strife, strife, strife.

Fellow Kotaku Tower inhabitant Luke Plunkett has more than once suggested that I attempt to seek a sponsored endorsement deal from the company in an attempt to offset the outflow of cash that goes in the Brooklyn-based company's direction. So far, no dice. While the brand generally focuses on things like metal, horror movies and He-Man, it's first video game related tee goes for an Arkanoid vibe. Yes, that Vaus at the bottom, tackling the label's Bear Mop logo... which has exploded in a very un-Arkanoid fashion.
