Frostmourne For $379 Seems Cheap Now

Those of you who railed against the $379 price tag for the Epic Weapons official replica of the cursed World of Warcraft sword Frostmourne might want to reconsider after seeing what folks paid for a chance at the first 100 numbered weapons. 1,012 users paid the non-refundable $429 entry fee for the Frostmourne auction - that's $434,148 - with the top 100 bidders in order receiving swords 1-100. The top bidder? $20,700 - over 54 times the price of the sword. Suddenly the prospect of gathering up $379 doesn't feel so daunting anymore. Sure, it won't be the official #1 Frostmourne, but I'd trade a giant foam hand and my imagination for $20,700 any day of the week. I'll save my money for when they get around to their Simple Dagger replica.

Frostmourne Makes A Lovely Gift

For those of you unfamiliar with World of Warcraft lore, Frostmourne is the legendary runeblade that stole the soul of Prince Arthas Menethil, causing him to kill his father, shatter The Frozen Throne, and ultimately merge with the Lich King into an uber powerful being, destined to become a raid boss somewhere down the line. Now Epic Weapons is readying the release of the Forstmourne replica, 47 inches of Japanese milled stainless steel, cast metal, and leather. The weapons comes complete with a lovely display mount, a limited edition poster, and an embedded authenticity microchip with a reader to help assure people you didn't make the weapon yourself in your garage. As far as replicas go it isn't cheap, running $379.00, but it's a small price to pay for the sword that completely tore Azeroth a new asshole. Frostmourne is now available for preorder, with a May 1st release date that eerily mirrors a certain Kotaku writer's birthday. *whistles innocently*

Rondo Of Swords - A New Approach To Turn-Based Strategy

Rondo of Swords, coming soon for the Nintendo DS via Atlus, looks like your standard turned-based strategy, but once you've see it in motion you'll quickly realize it's an altogether different animal. While some elements are the same - you still equip your characters, level them up using experience, catch snippets of storyline in-between battles - the unique Route Maneuver System is what sets it apart. Rather than simply sidle up to your enemy and hit attack, you actually program a path through them, allowing you to damage multiple enemies at once. I've spent a bit of time recently playing through the game, and so far I am really liking what I am seeing. More »

Week in Games: The Club Edition

A lot of titles this week with a spread over every system. Not a lot here that sparks my particular interests although I'll be too busy at GDC to really play much of anything. I am however looking forward to the new Ace Attorney game. Hopefully it can retain its freshness by adding a new main character. Otherwise Apollo could turn out to be the Scrappy Doo of the series.

Square Enix Cuts Down Sword Pirates

Odds are many of you already own one or more Final Fantasy replica weapons - and that frightens me - but at least they are generally of the more shoddy, unlicensed sword replicas you were likely to find on the cheap via eBay or Bob's Discount Cutlery Emporium. Now Square Enix is taking steps to get those sharp, pointy objects out of the hands of fans, having filed a federal lawsuit in the Central District of California against those whole would infringe upon their intellectual property. At least four manufacturers are named in the suit, which came about after the US Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Patrol seized a crate of counterfeit swords designed in the style of famous Final Fantasy weapons. Square Enix investigated, and while many resellers ceased their rampant reselling, the companies targeted by this lawsuit refused to cooperate, calling down spiky-haired justice upon them.

game announcements

Dragon Quest Swords Dated For US, Canada

Square-Enix announced today that the Wii exclusive slime slasher Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and The Tower of Mirrors will be shipping to North American retailers on February 26th. The best part? Those of us in the West will be given new, never before released bonus content, which the publisher describes as "a "Payback Mode" and four hidden bosses." This will inevitably lead to Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and The Tower of Mirrors Payback: International Remix + being released in Japan in the summer or fall of 2008. It will then sell an extra 50,000 or so extra copies of the game to people who already own it. Those poor bastards probably don't even see it coming.

Mobile's Lara Croft?

"Gentlemen, may I introduce you to Phoenix Shadowalker", begins the press release from Glu Mobile, announcing it's new mobile game available later this month, Shadowalker, or Shadowwalker going by the press release heading. Mistaking us for gentlemen was your first mistake. Assuming that some sultry model in a leather jacket and a mini-skirt holding a sword was going to ruin our on-again, off-again romance with Lara Croft was the second. We are gamers, Glu Mobile, and we have hot women with swords falling all over us all the time. We can't walk down the street without a walking hottie arsenal falling in step behind us. It's just how we roll. We've come to terms. Besides, mobile gaming already has a Lara Croft. Her name is Lara Croft. May we introduce you? More »

Dragon Quest Swords All Naughty Like

Dragon Quest Swords did alright. The game sold something like 300,000 units in its first week in Japan, making it the fastest selling Wii game. The game's art direction was a departure from the game's typical Akira Toriyama look. Was all gothy. There was even a gothic lolita character named Setia. DQ Swords' fan service includes in-game up-skirts. Perfect fodder real life ones! Here's costume player Ushijima doing her not-Square-Enix-approved take on Setia, upskirt homage and everything.

Full box art after the jump.

Yahtzee Skewers Heavenly Sword Demo

Yahtzee Croshaw is my hero. Having been discovered by The Escapist via his "Fully Ramblomatic" reviews of Fable: The Lost Chapters and the PS3 demo of The Darkness. He's a British-born writer living in Australia whose flash animations were among the best things on YouTube and now, by extension, The Escapist. This week in their Zero Punctuation segment he manages to cover everything I wanted to cover in my stories on the miniature Heavenly Sword(s) demo and Resident Evil 5 racism, only much more amusing than I could ever hope to be. I hate him. I love him. Just go look for yourself, and report back to me your findings.

Clip: Dragon Quest Swords Japanese Trailer

Fresh from the 2007 Square Enix party comes this new trailer for Dragon Quest Swords. Not surprisingly it's all in Japanese, but you still sit back and watch the visuals roll by. We get to see some cut scenes, and gameplay as well as some magic spells in action. Looks pretty comparable to the last Dragon Quest game graphics wise, but I do like some of the fancy outfits. But, that girl with the big, flat anime eyes mapped on to her 3D head and the guy with Charlie brown eyes standing next to her really freak me out.

Square-Enix Party 2007 Goodies

Japanese gamers are getting hyped up for the Square-Enix Party 2007, just a few weeks away, an event packed to the gills with all things Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Today, Square-Enix revealed the buyable goodies that they'll shill at the event, including that lovely little Dragon Quest Swords Silver Ring (for 14000 yen) you see pictured above. Not only does it grant the wearer with extra nerd cred when playing the upcoming Wii game, it features an area effect of +1 year of virginity. Nice drop! More »

Week in Games: Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360 Edition

If I didn't already own both iterations of Guitar Hero for the PS2, you can bet I'd be picking up the 360 version so I could get my hands on those extra songs. Clip: Prince of Persia Wii

While it's fun to watch this trailer for the Wii Prince of Persia, it sucks that it doesn't really give you a sense of how the motion controls are going to work. Come on, we already know what PoP looks like, its the controls we care about here.
