I must live in Bizarro Land. I told an old friend of mine about the SSF4, and he said "If Elena's not going to be in it, what's the point?"...
... and I totally agree with him. I'd also like to see Alex, Karin and Rolento (and I also thought that Oro should have been in Gouken's place, considering, ya know - GOUKEN IS DEAD!), but the fact that Elena is still ignored still makes it hard for me and many I know to care about this game.
So, seriously - Do I live it Bizarro Land? Is Elena only popular where I live, or has Capcom been ignoring her for some other reason entirely?
@the7k: Elena never got popular due to her relative low tier-ness in 3rd Strike.
Also, Gouken can't be killed by Akuma's Raging Demon. Raging Demon can only send people who are evil to hell. Anyone else it's only supposed to hurt a bunch. Of course the people who come across Gouken after he gets the smack down laid upon himself don't know that.
@MrTheMoopie:
Usually, Elena is considered Mid-Tier, though. I never really understood why she wasn't considered higher, though - she is fast and strong. The only thing she lacks is defense, but ya know - just don't get hit.
As for Gouken, we've been told all along, for quite some time, that Akuma killed Gouken pre-Alpha. Now, they say that wasn't the case. That's just a retcon. Considering Akuma also laid the Shin Goku Satsu upon M.Bison, should he also be dead?
I just wasn't exactly happy with the whole idea of making yet another shotokan, even if he did have a few changes. Those changes could have been applied to the library of pre-existing shotokans to actually make there be a real reason to choose Ryu or Ken over Akuma.
Plus, it would be nice to have her in for the sake of variety. We've already got a ninja (Vega), boxer (Balrog) and muai thai kick boxer (Sagat). Not that I'm against any of those characters being in, but c'mon. I'd like to see some interesting fighting styles.
I dunno, I guess I just ain't that big of a Street Fighter II fan, so it kinda irks me that they saw fit to include every SF2 character, but very little of the SF3 cast. I understand SF2 is 'nostalgic' and 'classic' and other words that people think makes it superior, but at least attempt to balance out the cast.
@MrTheMoopie: Yap, the whole idea that Gouken DIED due to SGS is sorely misunderstood, but it's easy to not know the whole truth because that guy is totally covered in his own blood and stuff.
@Prom4Prez: It was flat out stated in Street Fighter Alpha 2 that Akuma killed Gouken. Suzaku Castle, Ryu's stage in many of the SF entries, was even called Gouken's resting place in some of Capcom's official information books.
It's a retcon, plain and simple. Anyone who reads DC or Marvel Comics is familiar with it. It's a sign of bad continuity, and abuse of it leads to dramatic events having no impact at all. "Well, that sucks that Captain America is dead, but they'll just bring him back in a couple of years."
if Capcom is going all out to outdo the previous SF4, they might as well go whole hog, and stuff the roster with more awesome fighters and more specials etc.
@zåɳzißårléɠёпȡ: Capcom doesn't own the license to use Skullomania anymore as far as I'm aware. It was created by AKIRA of the EX series and skullomania left with them.
@shipsgrowteeth: i agree. Guy is so underrated. alpha series was so awesome in general. Alpha is where i really learned to chain combos, and was introduced to supers.
Cody was stuck in prison wearing that body hugging one piece!? No wonder he had to carry a knife and a wrench. The mind doesn't want to boggle where the hell he hid those two :|
As for Haggar making an appearance: I think Zangief has always automatically ruled him out. I can't see how Capcom could go about making him drastically different without taking away is (Zangief's?) trademark moves. If Capcom were to put him in a Street Fighter game, they would have by now. They even went and put Maki in a beat 'em up of theirs before Haggar.
I like how Capcom included Hugo in the construction site stage. Poison must not be far off...
I really do wanna see some Street Fighter III characters put into this game. F**k the story time line (when has that really ever mattered?) Ibuki please! :D
Of these new characters, I might learn Guy, maybe Juri, definitely Makoto if she's eventually made available. I'll definitely play Cammy and Sakura more seriously if they're balanced out.
Or I'll just stick to Viper. You stop playing her for a week and you've lost two weeks of improvement/experience. :(
Adon is most likely the best character of the bunch. Maybe Cody if the hitbox on his tornado is good enough and has +frame advantage on block. Seeing how fast Adon moves though, has given me some hope that Capcom will not completely fuck up Makoto, because she needs fast moves in order for her mix-up game to work. My biggest fear was that it wasn't going to translate well to 2d/3d SF4, but Adon has kept that hope alive somewhat.
@maraxusofk: Makoto's Karakusa metagame doesn't feel like a good fit for SFIV, even if they preserve her dash speed. No character in SFIV is designed with a reaction time-advantaged dash in mind like the one Makoto had, and a speedy dash coupled with a command grab with frame advantage on release sounds unfair given the type of gameplay ushered in by the SFIV engine.
Ibuki and Dudley would fit in just fine. Makoto?...I dunno.
@mintycrys is HOT for Bayonetta: Why not learning all of them? I can play with any SF character, sure, I'm better with some of them but I know the basics to all of them, it's cooler this way.
@LucasReis: I can play every character to some extent, but I've always preferred to really learn the ins & outs of one or two specific characters. Even if you know the characters moves, you may not "know" the character. Each character has a specific playstyle and metagame (Cammy with her instant Cannon Strikes, Dhalsim with fireball zoning, Viper with Burning Kick crossups) that they will rely on for damage, which is usually only evident to people who have put countless hours into a single character, and concentrating on one or two characters is almost the only way you'll really sink your teeth into the finer mechanics of a character.
I'll play around with all the new characters, but unless I see one that really impresses me the way Viper did, I'll be sticking with her come Super Street Fighter IV.
@mintycrys is HOT for Bayonetta: I get it. I do have my favorites. It's just that I like playing some sort of random-russian roulette when online. Even if I'm playing with very experienced players, I like to get a random character and the challenge gets even bigger if I get a character that I wasn't expecting.
@lolgreg: Ironic you say that with Zangief being your avatar. I would welcome Haggar if they could make him unique enough. Seems like zangief has all his moves already though. Plus I despise playing against grapplers.
I have the same name as Fahey's mom's dog. I'm actually kind of honored.
I like hearing my name in works of fiction. I still get some kind of weird, self-absorbed charge from it. Probably because it's a pretty uncommon name; I don't imagine any Jack, Max, or Ryu would feel the same. I read this article as if Fahey was talking about me stabbing those people. It was fun!
It doesn't hurt that Final Fight is so awesome either.

@penciledcookie: One of the things that struck me personally as odd was that I've had handcuffs on before and they're really not comfortable in the slightest. So anyone wearing them willingly (fictional character or otherwise) will always confuse at least a little.
@Friedhamster: I agree with you but the art for SF4 has been consistently mediocre by Capcom's standard and same goes for the so-so (Viper) to downright hideous (rufus) new character designs.
@WhiteMåge: That's how they make 'em in jail these days. That way the guards can see how buff an inmate is while not having to be worried about, ah, distractions.
