Mario's Already Missed a Coin]]>
Am I the only one looking at this with an OCD urge to rip back the controller and go hit the first coinbox? Come on, this is World 1-1. And it's painted on a concrete wall, although Mr. Juandrful over at Kezins doesn't say exactly where.

I wanted it to be a self-esteem project painted by a group of at-risk Goombas, but no, it's the handiwork of an artist who goes by BPAK. It's a "Quikrete infused" mural that took three weeks to complete.

<![CDATA[Fear and Loathing in World 1-1]]>

With great apologies to the late Hunter S. Thompson, for the out-of-context riffing.

"Luigi had taken his shirt off and was pouring beer on his chest. ... We had two bags of fire flowers, 75 mushrooms, five invincibility stars ... And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge winged turtles, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car ...

Update: The picture's artist is suzyage4. He says he drew the above image back in 2005. It's still timely — Mario is timeless after all.

<![CDATA[The Super Mario Brothers Wall Clock]]>

Website Tokyo Times took a trip to Japan's nerd gamer nirvana town, Akihabara and snapped a bunch of photos of the various gaming knicks and knacks for sale. The one that stood out the most for me was this awesome Super Mario Brothers wall clock. It's a bit hard to see in this photo, but the face is an underwater scene featuring a Blooper and a Cheep-Cheep along with the requisite Mario bricks and a second hand made to look like a flame bar.

At the moment I am furiously dialing Ashcraft so that I can wake him from his slumber and beg him to go buy me one. Hopefully he won't kick his wife in the face again in an attempt to answer the phone.

<![CDATA[Keeping Time With Mario]]>

Matt over at Press the Buttons has posted a nostalgic look back at one of those crappy, rubber-banded LCD video game watches so popular in the late 80's amongst ten year olds in geography class. Specifically, the Super Mario watch.

When I first saw the picture to the right, my heart heaved with fond remembrance. I actually owned this watch. My parents believed that video games rotted the mind (they had a point), so never would buy me an NES... forcing me to invest my allowance in crappy devices like this watch (or a Tiger Electronics LCD version of Castlevania II) to get my gaming fix.

And man, do I ever remember this little quirk:

Oddly enough, the "left" directional button is always used to move Mario forward. That works fine on levels one and three, but since level two requires moving to the right, this quirk can be confusing.

It didn't make any more sense even at the time, Matt. But we persevered, because we were desperate, idiot kids. Just what Nintendo was counting on!

<![CDATA[NES Super Mario Brothers: Adventures in the Third Dimension]]>

NickMade games has put together a 3D-rendered rendition of Super Mario Brothers for the NES. Looks like they just yoinked the graphics and mapped them onto some simple models and let 'er rip.

Super Mario Bros 2.5D is a remake of the classic, Super Mario Bros... in 3D. How can you remake a 2D game in 3D? Add depth! Defeat enemies as Mario in a whole new way with 3D views and 3D graphics!

So I downloaded it and played for about thirty seconds. Aside from being hideously ugly, the game is sorta floaty-feeling. None of the snappiness of the original. And the levels are not identical, either. This is a cute idea, but needs some serious work.

More pics and a download link here. [DESTRUCTOID]

<![CDATA[New Remote Mario, Toad Control My Wallet]]> Looks like the Famicom pad controlled lil' Mario and Goomba were a success, as Banpresto is issuing a sequel of sorts, this time with a fireball-throwing Mario (note: does not throw fireballs) and everyone's favorite Mushroom Kingdom pal, Toad.

Must. Get. Useless. Toys. Bank account... crumbling... Urge to spend... RISING!

<![CDATA[Super Mario Bros. Free Running]]> If you don't know about Parkour, often referred to as Free Running, it's the hip, urban thing to do when you want to jump off of things. Buildings, stairwells, parking decks — there is nothing these crazy kids won't jump off of! It's been popularized in commercials for Reebok, Madonna videos, and now, properly I might add, with Super Mario Bros. music and sound effects.

There's something quite satisfying about accomplishing a twenty foot drop, then shaking hands with spectators to bonus chimes.

<![CDATA[Super Mario's Hack Adventure]]> Simon from GameSetWatch points the gaming world to Vintage Computing and Gaming's preview of "The Best NES Game Hack of All Time", Mario Adventure. Admittedly, there isn't much competition, as dick jokes, pot references, and Nazi-mapped plumbers abound in the NES ROM hack domain. But it does sound special, featuring new enemies, new power-ups, weather effects, progress saving, and updated graphical changes to the Super Mario Bros. 3 game engine.

The .nes file is available at VC&G but you'll need an emulator to play the game. I'm certainly not going to do this, but a friend of mine will. Maybe he'll post his own impressions in the comments.

<![CDATA[MIT Hacked, Culprits Might Be Plumbers]]> Make it a Mario Level

Okay, in Academia a prank can't be just a prank. At MIT a prank isn't just a prank - it's a hack. This most recent hack turned a hall in MIT into a Super Mario Bros. level. Instead of what I, and many others may think of as a "hack" (involving computers, viruses and anger), the hack at MIT involved a lot of time, energy, construction paper and sleep deprivation. I have to admit though, I do like what they've done with the place.

Yay a Hack! [Life of a Tecker]

<![CDATA[Super Mario Speed Run Video]]>

Five minutes and 30 seconds. If you were Luke you could use that time to have sex with a beautiful women and smoke a pack of cigarettes or if you're the guy in the linked video you could beat Super Mario Brothers.

Triple Zing Score!
