<![CDATA[Super Mario Bros. 3 Gets Re-Gameplayed, Canvas Cursed]]> NES emulator FCEUX might be the coolest thing to hit the emulation scene, mostly because of its support for Lua, an embeddable scripting language. It makes Super Mario Bros. cool and the sequel cooler.

It basically turns Super Mario Bros. 3 into a fairly capable looking Kirby's Canvas Curse clone, with a custom script that let's Mario "rainbow ride" on platforms drawn by a mouse. The script also disables the player's control of Mario, forcing the plumber to walk in one direction until he hits an obstacle.

Using the mouse, players must guide Mario to the exit, destroying enemies with lines of rainbow power and drawing ramps. A very clever modification to this classic game.

<![CDATA[A Super Mario Bros. Super Drum Medley]]>

Drummer virtuoso Andrea Vadrucci beats out a super drum medley of the "Super Mario Bros 3" theme in this stunning three minute and 45 second video. Just watching makes my arms and foot hurt.

<![CDATA[This Chain Chomp Cap Is Like "Arf! Arf! Om Nom Nom"]]> Like what you see? Here's how to make your own Chain Chomp knit cap, as designed by knitter Allison MacAlister. Step 1, learn to knit. Step 2, go to the Knitting Ninja's web site and download the hat pattern. Step 3, ????. Step 4, you have a fantastic wearable homage to Super Mario Bros. 3—and or Super Mario 64, if you're so inclined—that will do its best to keep your noggin warm while giving the appearance of a black ball devouring your brain.

<![CDATA[Everything You Wanted To Know About The Wizard]]> Fred Savage and Nintendo Power Glove vehicle The Wizard has at least one uber die hard fan in Ain't It Cool News' Monki. The movie is due for a screening at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas next month, with director Todd Holland joining stars Fred Savage and Luke Edwards for the showing. The director was recently interviewed by AICN to get a fanboy friendly inside look at the production of the movie, including some details on Nintendo's involvement.

What may have seemed like a 90-minute commercial written by Nintendo suits may have actually been a different story. Seems that the Big N was at the movie studio's beck and call, hopping to whenever the director needed Super Mario Bros. 3 footage or a backup Power Glove. Also, I didn't know Tobey Maguire made an appearance!

You really do learn something new everyday. Unfortunately, today it's about The Wizard.

<![CDATA[Kuribo's Shoe Becomes Kuribo's Stocking]]> Kotaku reader Greg sent in word of his own handmade holiday creation, arguably the best Super Mario Bros. 3 Christmas stocking we've been sent yet. What isn't up for debate is that Kuribo's Shoe is my favorite Mario power-up of all time, for some strange reason. Kudos to you, sir. Someone get this man a proper license to mass produce these next year—stat!

<![CDATA[Super Mario Bros. 3 Graces Virtual Console]]> The header for this week's Virtual Console press release from Nintendo is, "WII-KLY UPDATE: GREATEST GAME EVER ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL", and for once I am in total agreement. Super Mario Bros. 3 (500 Points) has finally made it to the Wii Virtual Console. SMB3 has the distinction of being the second video game I bought with my own money, the first being Sunsoft's Blaster Master. Up until then I had been relying on my parents and relatives for my gaming fix, and from that point on every job I've had has been weighed by how many games I could buy while still paying rent and electricity. Super Mario Bros. 3 remains the sweet spot for the series, with no Mario title before it or since being as complete an experience. I do feel kind of bad for Alien Soldier for the Genesis (600 points) and Power Golf for the TurboGrafx16 (600 points) for having to share this week with a legendary game, but I suppose they're both that much better just by association.

WII-KLY UPDATE: GREATEST GAME EVER ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL

Eagerly awaiting the arrival of Super Mario Galaxy™ next week? Can't get Mario™ out of your head? You and everybody else! To whet your appetite for all things Mario, Nintendo is offering a special treat on the Virtual Console™ this week. It's not just any game, it's Super Mario Bros. 3™ - considered by many to be the greatest video game of all time (for at least one more week, anyway). It's a must-have title on a week that also features the first Virtual Console import title for Sega Genesis and a fun multiplayer golf game for TurboGrafx16.

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased via the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Remember when no one had ever heard of a Tanooki Suit or knew that Bowser™ had a clan of Koopalings? The game that made these things common knowledge is also considered by many to be one of the best ever made. Bowser and the Koopalings are causing chaos yet again, but this time they're going beyond the Mushroom Kingdom into the seven worlds that neighbor it. Now Mario and Luigi™ must battle new enemies, returning favorites and a new Koopaling in each unique and distinctive world on their way to ultimately taking on Bowser himself. Luckily for the brothers, they have more power-ups available than ever before. Fly above the action using the Super Leaf, swim faster by donning the Frog Suit or defeat enemies using the Hammer Bros. Suit. Use the brand-new overworld map to take the chance to play a minigame in hopes of gaining extra lives or to find a Toad's House where you can pick up additional items. All this (and more) combines into one of gaming's most well-known and beloved titles—are you ready to experience gaming bliss?

Alien Soldier™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older -Fantasy Violence, 900 Wii Points): As Epsilon-Eagle, you are an alien soldier who has been genetically engineered to produce maximum intelligence and strength. You were once a member of the criminal organization Scarlet, but when you decided to break from the group, you were forced into a showdown with Scarlet's new leader Xi-Tiger, who kills a hostage in his attempt to destroy you. Now it's up to you to take revenge against the bad guys in this side-scrolling action game! Choose from six different weapons and battle the bosses of Scarlet until you reach the final confrontation with the ultimate secret weapon!

Power Golf (TurboGrafx16, 1-3 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Power Golf sports a perfect combination of simple-yet-realistic controls and beautiful graphics. Swing away on 18 lush holes in one of three different game modes: the single-player STROKE PLAY mode and the multiplayer MATCH PLAY and COMPETITION modes. Enter tournaments as one of three different characters—beginner, intermediate and advanced. Wind strength and the slope of the green add extra challenges to each hole. Compete against other players in the standard NORMAL MATCH or ante up one of your clubs in the unique CLUB MATCH. Up to three players can play in COMPETITION mode, and a handicap feature is included to help novice players pull off breathtaking shots just like their advanced rivals.

The list of downloadable games is updated weekly on Nintendo's Online Press Room. For more information about Wii, please visit wii.com.

<![CDATA[Mega64 Does Super Mario Bros. 3]]>

This Mega64 clip, I swear I've seen it before. Maybe it was shown at the Game Developers Conference earlier this year, maybe it sneaked online at some point prior, or maybe I have some pre-cognitive ability to know the details of Mega64 comedy bits. Regardless, it's something the creators of this clip have labeled as new and it's Kuribo's Shoe, something I've always been fascinated by for some inexplicable reason. Please, won't you watch?

<![CDATA[Super Mario Bros. 3 The Complete Series]]> If you've grown tired of watching your Captain N: The Game Master DVDs, more craptastic Nintendo-licensed animation is just a credit card authorization and a regrettable decision away. Shout! Factory has released another Nintendo nostalgic cartoon series to DVD, this time collecting the entirety of the awkwardly titled The Adventures Of Super Mario Bros 3 in a three disc set.

The Adventures Of Super Mario Bros 3 ran a brief 26 episodes (or 13 double episodes, if you prefer) and features a bizarre Milli Vanilli guest appearance in a journey outside of the Mushroom Kingdom. That appearance, sadly edited to remove Rob and Fab's hit "Blame It On The Rain" can be seen on YouTube if you don't feel like ponying up the $29.99 for the DVDs.

Thanks for the heads up, Derrick!

<![CDATA[Solar Powered Mushroom Toys Redux]]> New York-based importer National Console Support is now taking orders for the newest version of the popular solar-powered, Super Mario Bros. 3-style power mushrooms. The bobbing-back-and-forth solar powered thing has been big in Japan for years now, so don't miss out on this opportunity to have a thing that will perpetually rock to and fro sitting on your desk. They even uploaded some video! They're no slouch when it comes to marketing. Sixteen bucks (plus shipping) is a small price to pay for a treasure like this. Seriously.

<![CDATA[Super Mario Bros. 3 Series Coming to a DVD Player Near You]]>

Just when you thought it was safe to go DVD shopping again we get this terrifying news from the the bbps. The Adventures of The Super Mario Brothers 3 cartoon series will be arriving in stores on June 5 in a 3 disc set. I really would like to say I'm sure this is going to be awesome, but I think that might be a bit misleading.

At Dragon-Con this year, I bought a copy of the Super Mario Bros Super Show on DVD complete with a personalized autograph from Capt. Lou Albano himself. I should have just left well enough alone, but I had to at least check it out. I lasted all of five minutes before I returned the disc to it's case, never to be watched again. It's really sad watching cartoons and shows that you loved as kid when you are an adult. Nine times out of ten they just don't hold up. So, in the case of The Super Mario Brothers 3, I think I'll just let it remain a happy memory.

<![CDATA[Encyclopedia Brown Hates New Super Mario Bros.]]>

And while I'm railing against beloved Nintendo DS games, I really don't like New Super Mario Bros. very much either, a game recommended to me not only by Kotaku-staffers of questionable taste like Ashcraft and Crecente, but proclaimed a "solid 7" by none other than 1UP's Luke "I Hate Everything" Smith. Diametrically inflated according to the withered circumference of Smith's own black, ichorous heart, that's like a solid 11 by any other measure.

As I complained to him on IM today:

Florian Eckhardt: New Super Mario Brothers. Solid 7 my ASS. luke at 1up: 5? Florian Eckhardt: It's no SMB3. luke at 1up: what fucking mystery will you solve next Encyclopedia Brown?

BURNED. I admit it. But New Super Mario Bros. is just the same Mario formula, programmed and designed with mathematical cynicism. It's phoned in. It is completely devoid of charm or personality: it's the Mario formula taken to the point of grating cliche. The funny thing to me is how much more personality the game would have with Paper Mario (or Mario & Luigi) style art direction. Because, outside of the 3D polygon stuff, what does this game do that Super Mario Bros. 3 didn't do better 10 years ago?

<![CDATA[Gamer Tattoos Tanooki Mario On Neck]]> Today is a day of ill-advised gaming tattoos. And what can you say about this Tanooki Mario tattoo, scrawled in ink right into the side of one Columbian gamer's throat? Good luck on the job interview, guy. That is an amazingly well done tattoo, though.
