all this news of gamestop breaking street dates at a cooperate level fills me with the hope that game producers will stop giving them preferential treatment that centers around exploitative pre-order practices and exclusive editions of games. #gamestop
Great job there, GameStop. Providing developers and publishers a very concrete reason to do business with console manufacturers and service suppliers directly by way of digital downloads, cutting retail out entirely.
What a bunch of brain scientists. I mean rocket surgeons. I... fuck this. #gamestop
Couldn't GameStop use this an excuse to break the street date on any game? I mean, is anyone going to check that some independent store has actually broken the release date first? #gamestop
This is becoming an ugly trend. There are stores that break street dates, but getting approval to do so from the corporate office is unethical. One of these companies needs to put their foot down and impose some penalties, even if Gamestop is a big, scary giant. #gamestop
Do you think we'll ever find out which "rogue independent" broke the street date?
I'd like to have some proof that GameStop isn't just using a fabricated store as a justification for breaking street date, but I don't think we'll ever get that proof.
It also seems odd that corporate would authorize this on a Saturday.
@Keepin It Hamsta: Yeah it's like that here in NY too. Seriously, out of thousands of GameStops, three break the street date and we're supposed to believe that this is some sort of insidious company-wide plot? #gamestop
As I am from Jersey and near the area I can understand fully why these stores are selling the games early. Just 15-20 minutes from their location you will find mom and pop shops everywhere selling the game early. I already picked up AC2 in Newark. I'm not surprised this happen #gamestop
@NightMystic: What amuses me are the attitudes (prevalent ones, too, if the comments for this article and others like it are in any way representative) offered up by many of these independent game stores-- that GameStop shouldn't break street date because GameStop can afford to lose a few sales to intrepid, street date-breaking mom-and-pop establishments. And that breaking street date and selling games early is the only way that smaller shops can compete with the larger, chain establishments.
Here's the thing about business-- none of your competition owe you a damn thing. GameStop isn't beholden to your store succeeding, and the notion that indie shops have some kind of inviolate law protecting them from going under in the face of more profitable competition is a foolish one. #gamestop
Gamestop: "Hey, we already pissed off Activision when we put a damper on Modern Warfare 2's huge launch. You know what? Let's piss off Ubisoft and EA/Steam too! Next, we'll piss off Square Enix when we release Final Fantasy XIII the day we get it in stock! 3.9.10 our ass. Maybe we can release Metal Gear Rising early. Then we'll piss off Epic, Microsoft, Sony, Tecmo, Capcom, Nintendo, and Take Two, etc. Just for fun..."
This is starting to get out of hand. Do they really think that angering publishers is going to be good for business? Am I the only one that sees this as another impetus for major publishers to move towards online distribution only? Gamestop is shooting themselves in the foot with this one. #gamestop
@feegore: If a publisher pisses their pants and cries and foregoes physical distribution because gamestop let 3 stores sell games they already got in the stores a little early, I don't think I want to support them ANYWAY, because that would be pathetic. #gamestop
@WhiteMage Says Fix the Promotion System: I'm not saying that 3 little stores are going to cause major problems. Just that this is not a good precedent. MW2, L4D2, Assassins Creed 2 (hmmm lot's of 2's), are the major releases for the publishers this year. You would assume that as a retail entity, you'd want a good trusting relationship with publishing companies. Right now it's only a few stores, but how long until it becomes the norm? #gamestop
@WhiteMage Says Fix the Promotion System: no, slippery slope is not a fallacy, just like how ad hominem is not a fallacy. It is a form of argument. It is only a fallacy when it is used incorrectly.
For instance: Event A causes event B because of A is perfectly valid, at least in its argumentative form.
What is a fallacy is saying event A causes event B without any actual point backing it up, or saying event A will cause event C because of event A. A. In this case, event A is "[the lack of] good trusting relationship with publishing companies"
The lack of communication and trust between publishers and retailers leading to an increase of improperly released games is hardly fallacious. #gamestop
@WhiteMage Says Fix the Promotion System: No but this is the start of a trend. When a major company starts doing something like this it becomes all the more justifiable for others to follow.
Publishers won't just sit around and watch their launch get screwed up. They spend money and effort getting a good release, and greedy retailers are messing that up. #gamestop

.....I'm sorry, but I can't draw a tenth of a ounce of rage over this. #gamestop

So yes, you do have to refute it.

It's not like EVERY SINGLE GAMESTOP INT HE WORLD is selling things early.
It's a few.
In tiny little areas.
In response to another retailer doing it.
Blame someone? Blame the retailer run by someone too stupid to understand what a release date is.
React? React reasonably: That tiny little cluster of 3 gamestops isn't going to cause the DOWNFALL of game releases. #gamestop
