DoW/CoH has always had an incredibly flexible camera system, and yet once you get into playing it you are almost exclusively going to be using the fully zoomed out camera.
So re Stormrise, A) How is this revolutionary?
and B) is there really any point in using the ultra-zoomed view?
@Guts_: Point taken, but are you honestly saying that as your Assault Marines cut off the retreat of the enemy's last sound, and shouted out, "EAT CHAINSWORD!", you weren't zoomed in to watch? If this is the case, I worry for your humanity.

I run WinXP and I support PCs for a living - we use XP SP3 at work too.
Windows 7 Beta is nice so far though. Of course they moved all the essentials around so there's a retraining curve and we'll get flooded with calls from confused users if we officially upgrade to it, but so far it seems to be pretty nice.
But really, the biggest problems with Vista at work would be lack of driver support, sometimes for outdated hardware, and compatibility issues with the myriad programs we have to support on thousands of XP boxes here. I get the feeling that whenever we switch OSes it's not going to be pretty no matter how polished it is.
Actually a lot of people, especially schools and businesses, seem to still be rocking XP so I'd say it has awhile before it dies off for the most part. I'm running Vista but I'm considering/procrastinating on setting up an XP Professional/Vista dual boot.
Wow, that's really...fucking stupid. They make the first mistake of developing an RTS for consoles using a new IP instead of one with massive fans that are guaranteed to buy it despite being of a genre that's strange and alien to them (Halo, duh), and now they're limiting their PC demographic by requiring DX10 and Vista. SEGA, reign those boys in, their making some horrible mistakes.
Eh, doesn't matter much. This isn't a game to make me give up XP. I've seen people able to get DX10 working on XP machines but them companies tend to patch them so that doesn't work with their workarounds.
We'll see soon if this bites them in the ass. I'll probably just make a new partition for w7 64bit when it comes out. Or perhaps I could bide time and wait for the first 64 bit only OS, windows 8 ;;>_>
@超外人: The day we see 64-bit only OSes will be a blessing. If only 64-bit WinXP hadn't been such a disaster. Honestly this is part of why it's still so hard to get companies to offer 64-bit versions of software, they just aren't motivated (just like hardware manufacturers never properly wrote their drivers).
@Foxsnipe: You must be using some company software or something, as I've only had like 2 programs that I couldn't install and had to get a 64bit version of.
It has been stated that windows 8 will be the first 64bit only OS, they've repeatedly stated that win7 will have a 32 bit as well.
Anyway, the only thing that'd push me into Vista 64 right now, would be the need of SLI support. However, I'm not much of a graphic nut and I'm content so far with my old GPU. Either way, I doubt I'd drop XP entirely and keep it on an old HDD or partition because I've had headaches with vista and some programs, especially for capturing.
Hopefully, we will see 64 bit OS support in faster time for win7. Otherwise I'm going to need to have multiple OSes for tons of things :(
@超外人: No, you've never seen people get DX10 working on XP machines. It is physically, fundamentally impossible to do so. At most, the only thing you've ever seen is people getting games to report that they're running in DX10 mode in XP when, in actuality, the underpinnings of what they're running is still DX9.
If you have proof otherwise, feel free to provide it. But the entire point of DirectX 10 is to take advantage of the completely overhauled driver model that was introduced with Vista. Windows XP doesn't have anything close to that driver model, and it doesn't have the drivers.
@超外人: I didn't mean to say I couldn't install some programs, but it will be nice when all companies take advantage of 64-bit programming. It's just a bit irritating to see companies taking the easy way of writing 32-bit and letting Vista x64 run it in emulation (which creates a little lag in performance).
This is especially true for some legacy software that requires a driver, which Vista 64-bit will not allow unless it is properly signed. I only ever encountered that with Acronis True Image, but it was solved by an updated version, thankfully.
To add to @dLMN8R's post, before someone decides to mention it, Halo 2 PC had no technical reason to force Vista, it still used the DX9 runtimes, which is why it can be "patched" to install on XP.
@dLMN8R: Actually, I may be mistaken like you claim. This was when Vista and DX10 barely came out, so I can't back up my claims or verify what you said.
I guess I can take your comment as more valid than mine. I'm not high-tech like many of you guys are, and perhaps I've read wrong.
Considering though, that some games can work with older DX models, wouldn't it be possible that some people can get the game running but the graphics will have some errors in rendering?
@Foxsnipe: I see your point very clearly then. I don't think we'll see many programmers avoid the emulation route for a few years after 64 bit is standard (perhaps 5-7 years minimum)...
And what you stated is what I was confused on about requiring dx10/vista and such and is likely what I made my mistake on relating to DX10 on XP. Perhaps some other games had that as well.. GeOW and Mass Effect?
Is this the RTS with that little Whip thing on consoles? I think I saw it on X-Play and it looked pretty cool. =P Guess I'll pick it up on a console. :( I have Vista, but my laptop chugs playing DX10 games.
@Archaotic: Congrats! You won't be able to play this game at all, even if you did upgrade! (Or at least run boot camp, in which case you'd still need to upgrade...)
Actually, I'm on a pretty powerful MacBook laptop. This thing could run Crysis (not on high settings of course) or this game, if only my external HDD hadn't burned out two weeks ago right before I was installing the SMT Online beta. :[
And I bet by running boot camp you think you're still being a Mac hipster. Microsoft doesn't make PC's. They make the OS to run them. So if you put Windows on it, you'd actually be using a PC. Apple just being the manufacturer. Like HP being someone else's manufacturer.
Thus showing that Mac is the inferior product, as most users dual boot Windows anyway. How many people do you know who own a genuine PC that dual boot Mac OS?
Well, in their defense, OS X is one of those annoying operating systems that basically demands specific hardware. It's very rare to have a Windows PC that dual boots to OS X because you'd need to make sure all of the guts were compatible with OS X in the first place.
From what I can tell, it's a lot easier to have a Mac with XP on it than an XP machine with OS X on it, basically.
Also, "hipster" is the wrong word. Try "college graduate who studied cinema". You pretty much need a Mac if you're a film major and want to get anything done outside of the labs.
This game gets released in two weeks.. by the time Windows 7 comes out, will anyone honestly even remember Stormrise, like "Oh! Now I can finally play that RTS that required Vista!!"
We'll probably all be moved onto Starcraft 2 by then ;)
@Roufuss: Unless you're just going to run it in the 7 beta... where nearly everything that Vista runs, performs just as well, and with stable video drivers. So it's not like you couldn't do it, if you wanted to.
@Roufuss: Yeah, I'm dual booting XP and Windows 7 beta right now, love my XP. Although calling it a 7 year old OS is kind of misleading. The service packs bring huge updates and the latest one was less than a year ago.
I'll most likely make the switch to Windows 7 but I'm still not satisfied with the UI changes they've made. I hate that they try to mimic OSX's dock, I'm really not understanding why people like it. Inefficient, takes up more screen real estate than regular text, and ugly as hell. The new start menu bothers me too, I prefered the old menu with common apps sitting 1 click away and the sliding menu, not the explorer/finder look with the expanding drop downs. I don't really understand why they thought we needed to save space by using this style.. unlike the taskbar which is permanently there, you only cover up the screen for a few seconds at a time, and its rare that you would need to see behind it anyway.
@Roufuss: I've seen plenty of evidence that switching from XP to Vista will bring gaming speeds down considerably. PC Gamer ran some shit about building your own PC, and showed that playing Company of Heroes or Crysis on the ideal 'bang-for-buck' machine with Vista will take about 10 FPS off of what it would run on an XP machine with the exact same hardware.
Also, I've been reading reports of many people (and businesses) who have been buying used PCs solely so that they can have a legitimate license for XP, since Microsoft doesn't offer XP any longer. That seems to be a lot of hoops people are willing to go through just to get an official version of XP.
@Roufuss: I'm with those who are waiting on Windows 7 to reach RTM to put XP to bed-- FINALLY. Vista isn't as bad as most would suggest, particularly if they just had driver issues at the operating system's launch window, but Vista's memory utilisation is absolutely wretched. They repaired that busted thinking with W7, and it shows. Adding in D3DX support, and suddenly my XP is filing for retirement.
In my opinion piracy is as good as it's bad (maybe a bit more bad then good). It's bad because it's stealing, only difference is that even a 6 year old can steal videogames, music and films over internet without any trouble, BUT, it's also good because many, many super hyped games don't have a single demo released not before the full game is released, the same day the game is released or a few weeks after so basically all you can do is hope your money won't go to waste. And many times I bought a hyped game, read the reviews about it, and realised it was crap. Example? Far Cry 2 is extremely boring if you ask me, you may think it's the best game you've ever played, my point is everyone should be able to try before they buy and then piracy wouldn't have absolutely any excuse for existing.
The reason people pirate is because it's a better service compared to the normal legal channel. People who use torrents can get games quicker and with less strings attached. Instead of doing nothing, Creative Assembly, along with other developers and publishers should be fighting piracy with service and not with things like Securom and other kinds of intrusive DRM.
@Rubezh: Definitely. They need to turn playing games legitimately into an experience worth paying for. If it's sufficiently better than pirating, then people will pay.
It seems like Ubisoft is starting to take this approach as well. Not only is PoP PC DRM free, but so is Endwar. Went to look for a No DVD crack for it once I had it installed only to find out that the game carries no disc check. I'd like to see them continue this trend.
