If anybody in the UK was wondering, the government spends about $60 billion each year on defence spending. According to the 2007 figures that's second only to the U.S. and more than any other E.U. country at around 2.5% of our GDP.
Just take a second and imagine what just half of that could do if spent on education or healthcare.
@Weirdwolf: There's diminishing returns when it comes to education. Some of the best funded school systems in the US are the worst performing. D.C. schools spend $25,000 per student, yet almost none of them graduate from high school. My school system spent $4000 per student, and 98% of us went to college. You can't buy parent involvement or a stable family life.
As for health care, in the US, we already spend too much on the people who have it. The trick to fixing it is giving coverage to more people, while wasting less on the people who already have it. It's estimated that 40% of all spending is unnecessary.
On the other hand, your military actually needs more money. Just today, it was announced that the Territorial Army won't be training for six months due to lack of funding.
@jetRink: Well we have universal healthcare coverage over here and the NHS is wonderful but will always need more money.
As for the example of the D.C. education system whilst not totally applicable over here from what I know of the area surely that isn't a funding problem so much as a cultural one. The only way to improve that rate would be to educate people and improve the social structure to a point where graduating would be seen as a positive advantage rather than a pointless exercise.
Ah the SAS,(Saturdays and Sundays) the TA isn't like your National guard in that, while it is a voluntary organisation its role traditionally is very much one of a secondary support role. That has changed only fairly recently because of an over stretched force trying to deploy in too many arenas at once.
A lot of the budget for defence is being spent on a pretty much useless nuclear deterrent, for example renewing Trident is going to cost a minimum of $40 billion.
Oh I love Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister, I have the books sitting on my bookshelves. It's widely regarded in political circles as being rather more of an accurate depiction of Whitehall than it's comfortable to admit.
How would we defend ourselves against the French? Why the same way that every other nation does, by beating them soundly dear boy! ;-Þ
Oh believe me except in rather special circumstances I wish we could. Of course the special circumstances would include not sitting around when the NAZI's rolled through Europe...
Funny Story: I once had to explain to a patient how to inject Triple Mix without really knowing what it was for during a summer internship. While I was explaining to the patient how to do it over the phone, my supervisor was laughing hysterically. When I had finished, she asked me if i knew what the medication was for. She told me it was for ED and let's just say I turned a pale white when I put 2 and 2 together and figured out where the needle went.
IMO if it gets to the point where a needle is required to get it on...it's time to move on.

So, the video game industry could pay for the Ruissian Military.
Also nice to know that there's only one single man on their, Mr Gates. Guess its lucky hes into philanthropy now.
also I'm confused? why does it have Iraq on one part being $200billion, but in the big purple square being $3000billion.
Same with Video game market being $32Billion, but Nintendo alone being $76billion, surely Ninty count as video game market?
@deanbmmv: There are two different Iraq statistics: that of the total estimated cost, and the yearly costs of 2006, 2007 and est 2009 cost.
The same goes for Nintendo and the Video Game Market. Nintendo's figure is their worth as indicated by the Nikkei Exchange, while the Video Game Market is probably yearly income from video games and video game-related sales.
@Ratfuzz: Problem isn't getting the money/food to feed the children, problem is getting the food TO the children. Most of the hungry children of the world are in places where corruption is so bad, the food would get diverted before it got anywhere near them.
It's not just corruption, from my rather dodgy memory of the figures I seem to recall that for every $1 that most third world countries get they are paying about $19 on debit interest!
U.N. drops food packages in Africa to feed starving people. Warlords apprehend said packages, keep them from the people, and now have even more leverage on them.
It's a problem that needs solving, but it's not so easy as "let's just send our porn money to every hungry child in the world!"
I'm not even going to get into the economics 101 of where that porn money comes from or how it actually affects the economy.

@stevegiblin: That's not a cameraman, it's Mark Carwardine. He is a naturalist, wildlife photographer and tv/radio presenter. He does a lot of work for wildlife conservation.
That clip is from a programme called "Last Chance to See" a few years ago he got together with the late Douglas Adams and made a series in which they travelled round searching out critically endangered species. If you can find a copy of it there is a book they wrote about their various misadventures which is a very good read.
He recently got together with another of Douglas Adams friends,Steven Fry, to retrace their steps and see what has happened in the intervening years. The BBC has made a series of TV programmes that have been broadcast over the last few weeks.
@stevegiblin: LOL that parrot is totally beating him over the head. I guess he likes it rough hahaha. He got shagged by a rare parrot. He probably shouldn't have worn that parrot green shirt.
I was doing pretty well on this game, but I started shutting down the system and the auto-save came on effectively erasing my 20+ hours in the game. After that, I was greatly discouraged from starting an entirely new game. :(
Still think this graph is flawed. In that you can't track game usage all that well and survey cards can be lied to. Alot of people claim to play their Nintendo Wii's but not many do. Also if you were to track my gaming as of just this past month my Wii number would be high even though 100% of it was the virtual console(i.e. Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64, NES...etc)
@Xeeros: "Alot of people claim to play their Nintendo Wii's but not many do. "
Nominated for dumbest comment of the day. Why would people lie about this on a survey? We've already established that the Wii has a vast casual adult market. Why would 40 year old moms lie about gaming? If anything, you'd think they would be embarrassed to admit how MUCH they use it, not the other way around. No, grow up, people aren't LYING to neilsen. Also, lots of Nielsens data now comes from little set top boxes they give to customers such that customers can't lie, or forget, or whatever. Either way, who even cares?
Shouldn't the usage for the year for each system be an average of the last 12 months... and not JUST looking at the last month and claiming crap like the PS3 is 5th like Kotaku has done?
If you look at it over the entire year, the original Xbox was played more than the PS3 making the PS3 actually 6th, and the Xbox 360 was actually 2nd and Wii 4th... Right?
