Square Enix Says Star Ocean PS3 Listing "An Error"
Comic-Con 2009: The Damage So Far
Star Ocean Scoots Up A Week

07/30/09
Oh well I liked it so I hope there's some PS3 fans that like it too.
07/29/09
i'd just like to take a moment and call out any vocal director of an current gen rpgs.
what the fuck are you getting paid for. you suck
07/29/09
i thought it was a great game...shame PS3 people wont play it,i think the majority of them would like it
are you an actual fan of either JRPGs or the Star Ocean series?
07/30/09
That is, if Enchanted Arms or Eternal Sonata, both terrible games, constitute real choices.
07/30/09
07/29/09
Im beginning to think more and more that we will never, ever see a quality JRPG this generation. All the JRPGs so far for current-gen systems have been a colossal fail.

Geez, we must all be getting pretty fluent in PR speak by now.

.......
(Honestly, the only one I ever played was 3. I kinda liked it. It was a bit ridiculous in many ways, but it didn't crap all over the memory of the first two for me, 'cause I didn't have any!)
07/29/09
This.
07/29/09
3 was.....well, apart from story, it was a decent enough game.
4 is apparently worse.
07/29/09
And all that aside, this "news" makes me happy. Any chance to play a JRPG on the $500 behemoth I banked on this gen makes me happy, really. :p
07/29/09
(And some would say my JRPG standards are low. I'm one of the few who actually really, really liked Enchanted Arms. Wish there was a sequel.)
As far as 4 is concerned, when Xbox owners feel bad a game is coming to the PS3 not out of fanboy rage but out of pity for what appears to be a craptacularly crappy game, you know it must be...um...crappy.

But the visuals were awful, the voices were terrible no matter the language, the character design was offensively bad, the music (oh god, especially the battle music) was an assault on the ears.
On the PS3 version, if you were downloading something from PSN when you loaded the game, the game would freeze on the first menu (and they never bothered patching it!)
Oh, and the actress who played Yuki (who I referred to only as "Shitty Rikku") pronounced Karin's name differently every time she said it. A liberal helping of polish would've helped that game immensely.
07/29/09
I know you probably have no idea what I'm talking about anymore, but I thought I'd share.
07/29/09
But I definitely know I'm in the minority when it comes to liking that game.
Also I"m surprised they didn't update the PS3 version. I had played the 360 version so I didn't know about those problems.
07/29/09
07/29/09
Dude, whether or not it will be ported SE does not have to port it if they feel they don't need to. Either be patient, or get a 360 and SO4 for that...

It´s my opinion, of course, but I think Jrpgs are stuck in time for some reasons, and thats making them fall behind western titles like Fallout 3 and Mass Effect:
1) Story is one reason: they normally don't make sense at all and are the very generic good guys vs a bad guys. That kind of story can be good but they usually are not because...
2) Characters: Please, no more 10yo party members... no more the little guys from Lost Odyssey or, better (worse) the cast from Blue Dragon.
3) Dungeon crawling: Jrpgs are stuck in time cause its always the same formula: big city -> map -> dungeon -> big city -> map -> dungeon.
Dont get me wrong, I still play these titles and have some fun, but they just need something new for this generation. Eternal Sonata is my favorite Jrpg so far this generation, basically cause it has an original story for a jrpg and a great soundtrack.
07/29/09
The thing is, the two sections of the genre are really not exactly comparable, they're aiming for different things and I think it's doing a disservice to both to constantly say "FALLOUT AND MASS EFFECT ARE BETTER THAN EVERY JRPG." They're not in direct competition.
07/29/09
And anybody who thought that Fallout 3 was good should go ahead and give Fallout 2 a try. While you're at it, throw in some Deus Ex and System Shock 2. Those are some of my favorite western RPGs.
07/29/09
07/29/09
Storywise, I don't think it's fair to sterotype. There are a LOT of poor stories in western RPGs, and there are quite a few GOOD stories in JRPGs.
Characters, I'll agree with. Sometimes the JRPG/anime styling can just be a little too over the top for me. Some like it, I generally don't. I also find it difficult living in the western world and seeing some of the heroes in JRPGs. I mean, let's face it, 99% of them would have the crap beat out of them in a western 5th grade gym class...
Dungeon crawling is only bad if it's not done right. I can still to this day play Diablo II because it just felt "right". And that's as "formulaic" as you can get.
Not to mention playing it a little safer offers a more refined product in some cases. For instance, Fallout 3 was a MESS of bugs. At least, on my PS3 it was awful. The traditional formula is "tried-and-true" so it can offer refined gameplay, so even though sometimes it might be a little more stale, it still might feel better overall.
(No comments on Mass Effect, I'm a PS3 owner who hasn't played it so I can't judge)
07/29/09
Of course, you could argue that the PC version was the worst, too. I don't know.
07/29/09
There are, of course, exceptions. The Persona series immediately comes to mind. And you mentioned Eternal Sonata, which I haven't had the opportunity to play. In any case, there is innovation in the JRPG genre.
As for your dungeon crawling comment, I don't really see how Western RPGs have done anything to improve on the tedium of clearing dungeons. Fallout 3 did it, and Mass Effect did it worse. Mining minerals on a few dozen planet surfaces with different coloured textures is not my idea of fun. The cookie cutter bases on these planets did nothing to improve the situation. At least in JRPGs I don't typically have to roam planet surfaces in a clunky-as-expletive-hell rover.
07/29/09
The only reason it seems to have gotten "less support" is because of the lack of DLC, which is being rectified by Bethesda as we speak. :P
07/29/09
I played it twice on my PS3. Loved it.
07/29/09
I miss good stories in games, some kind of epic story, I still think that a good story is what most rpgs and adventure games need these days. And I dont know why, but it also looks like its hard to make good game characters, characters that will be truly remembered like Snake and other guys.
Ironically, the game with the best story and characters this generation, in my opinion, is an action/rpg game called Bioshock :P. Andrew Ryan and specially Sander Cohen are very very cool.
07/29/09
The story is generic, and character lines are poorly written. Generally, while some pride themselves on offering "options" to the player, these are usually as black and white as "save the kitten or tear its head off and drink it's blood".
Characters are also highly stereoptyical. A roided up space marine for example. Combine this with repetitive / bland dungeons (Oblivion, Mass Effect), and much of my interest is lost.
I don't think there has really been a good Western RPG recently. The witcher is the only title that springs to mind, which is kind of sad as the game was flawed in many ways too.
As someone who loved the old isometric style games (balders gate, icewind dale, planescape torment, fallout) as well as the FPS rpgs (System Shock 2, Deus Ex), I just feel thoroughly disappointed that no devs have tried to take those game styles and expand on them. Instead they've gone and 'reinvented the wheel', so to speak, with the combat system in Mass Effect and Fallout 3, and I just didn't enjoy the results.

All this denial means is that Square doesn't want people to know about the (supposed) port until THEY say so, rather than letting the whole deal be spoiled by some random website.
If it ends up being just a fake rumor though, who cares? I've played SO4, and unless there are MAJOR changes to the story, acting, and character models, I don't think it'd be worth another playthrough. Hire some better dialogue writers next time, KAY?

I'm guessing the port will be announced soon though. Wonder if it will include some extras or upgrades. I'll pick it up since I'm a fan of the series, even though it has had better days.

If they put it on PSN! I would try it.
07/23/09
I played the heck out of 9. Was my first Playstation game.
07/23/09
I went to the front of the line, got someones attention who was next in line, handed them $50 and had my Soundwave within minutes. Did the same thing for my Dead Space figure at the NECA booth and saved myself hours of waiting.
07/23/09
On one hand, you probably screwed over somebody who was in the line. On the other...I would've let you in for $50, too. Either way, it's more reliable than eBay.
07/23/09
You had to see what some of these people were hauling away to believe it. The first hundred people there were dealers who were buying as much as they could so they could sell them at their booth for a higher price. A few minutes later after I snagged my prize I saw the same soundwave for sale for 30$ more than what I paid.
I've got ratbat on my desk! RATBAT.
07/23/09
Buying it for yourself, though...nothing wrong with that.
I've got a feeling I'd just end up leaving Comic-Con a little bitter about the cool stuff I wasn't fast enough to get.
07/23/09
Of course, I'm not willing to shell out the dough for it, but still....
I want stuff :(
