I know a lot of folks are upset that a Zelda game may be far more restrictive from an exploration angle than past titles, but I think this is Nintendo aiming to make it a PORTABLE Zelda. A game that you can pick up for a few minutes, make some progress, and then shut the lid so that you can get off of the bus.
Now, I am not saying I agree with the philosophy. Nintendo's own history sort of betrays this movement (Link's Awakening and the Oracle games). And, I am sure there are plenty of people who would rather see the company create a new IP instead of using the Zelda brand.
However, perhaps folks should realign their outlooks based on what the game is TRYING to do as opposed to what they WISH it COULD HAVE been ... ?
another 100 years have passed? I swear if this series was chronological it would be the year 3,000 by now. So much for the technological advancement of the people of Hyrule.
@Malfunktion v2: Well, the world WAS flooded leading up to the events of Wind Waker. That would certainly put a dent in technological advancements and their required materials. :P
Bah, it bugs me that now they've settled on these two Link designs they're sticking with them. Before it seemed easy to separate all the different Links, as the games for different consoles always featured a new design (although the one used for Gameboy games always remained relatively the same, but that was less detailed...). It wasn't hard to imagine every Link as being a different person.
Now we're getting another DS title with what looks to be the exact same Link, although this is apparently 100 years later (I'm guessing to explain the receded water). The next Wii title also apparently features a different Link from Twilight Princess, but he looks like the same person, only a tad older.
They couldn't have like, made some minor hair changes? Or little detail changes to their tunics? Anything? :\
@Mit: To be fair to Zelda Wii, there is only one piece of character art to base the entire visual style on.
While I doubt Link will radically different from it, perhaps we should wait until the visual style is seen in game before writing it off? After all, lest one not forgot what occurred with what was seen at Spaceworld 2000 and the final style applied to Wind Waker ...
Pigs aren't a new species to harass in the Zelda series, seeing as how you could do it in Wind Waker-
Funny that most people (at least in America) hated the sailing in both Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, but they get all excited about using trains. Yay! The same thing again! When it comes out there will probably be a lot of bitching about how the train missions are long and unnecessary. Not from me though- I dislike the train for other reasons. Wind Waker's sailing was great, horseback was best in Ocarina, and now we get to be confined to an on-rails shooter. Exploring used to be a point of the Zelda games...
@denki: Hey, Wind Waker may be my favourite 3D Zelda, and it may be another's least, but you're looking at it all wrong. EVERYONE loves trains. From songs to books, kids shows to Japanese sims, Nintendo's just jumping on the train gravy train.
I wasn't the biggest fan of an all stylus controlled Zelda, and actually didn't get far beyond the first dungeon in Phantom Hourglass. This one isn't looking to pull me in either, it seems.
@-[[CHoZO]]-: I quit playing Phantom Hourglass when I found out there's one dungeon you have to repeat after every other dungeon. So that's doing the same dungeon seven or eight times. Fuck that shit.
@Busting makes Mister Jack feel good: Except that everytime you go back whatever new item you had allows you to take a massive shortcut and skip most of the puzzles you solved once. On your 3rd or 4th trip you can create a half way warp point that never leaves.
I know. Everyone is trying to tie all the Zelda's together, but that's like finding a logical timeline in the Madden series. It's a new game. That's it.
Wait, if there's an ocean of sea everywhere in Phantom Hourglass, shouldn't the Zelda Universe be completely engulfed by water by the time Spirit Tracks rolls around?
I'd figure the Hyrulians would have solved global warming by the time Windwaker came by..
@Rozeros: I wanted to like Phantom Hourglass, but it bored the hell out me. It was like taking the worst part of Wind Waker, and making it an even more important part of the game. Ugh.
@Rozeros: Yeah, I thought it was okay but certainly not my favorite portable Zelda. Going back to that same dungeon over and over definitely didn't help.
@Rozeros: I thought I liked it until I realized that it wasn't fun for me. I fear that I am just starting to grow out of the Zelda trend. Started when I was 5 with legend of Zelda and now 20 years later (currently 25) I seem to no longer care about Zelda games.
@Rozeros: Phantom Hourglass was pretty fun. It wasn't too much of a joyride, but what made the game fun was that the collectibles were fun to get, and the dungeons were somewhat easy, yet challenging. The gameplay was unique, and it was interesting to settle into the DS style of Zelda gameplay.
My big complaint would be about the large dungeon that you're forced to go back to after each important segment in the story. That kind of ruined it for me at times. Most of the time though, the game was great to play.

Man, this is going to piss the timeline theorists off.

Make no mistake - Phantom hourglass link is dead from old age or scurvy. Probably the latter.
