I swear, the analog directions on the Sith Destroyer level was broken. After the upth-teen millionth time (about eight tries on the last part), I finally adjusted what I was doing with the sticks and the fucking thing started to move towards me, FINALLY!!!
@AntiZERØ: I think the analog prompts on that bit show the joysticks as seen from the underside of the controller, not the head-on view seen in every other game with on-screen prompts ever. Once I figured that out, I had a much easier time bringing the Destroyer down.
But seriously, who in the dev team thought that was even the slightest bit understandable to the player?
@SocraticMethod: Wampas would sometimes find their way into Echo Base, and kill off Rebels. They managed to capture some, and put them in holding cells.
@DreamDivision: Yup, there's even a part in Empire Strikes Back where you can see a medical droid poking at a dead tauntaun in the background, part of a scrapped subplot about wampas sneaking around the base without being seen.
There was even a bit in the script during the evacuation, where C-3PO stops to tear the warning sticker off the door to the wampa pen. A group of pursuing stormtroopers then take a wrong turn and get mauled. If you have the DVD set from 2004 or whenever, you can see a quick shot of 3PO tearing the sticker off the door in one of the trailers. If I'm not mistaken, I think that's all that was even filmed of the scene, though.
My big problem with TFU was that I bought into the idea of being able to kick ass with the force. And then found that as I went on, some enemies were resistant to the force.
The only time I felt like a true badass, and the only time the game really shined for me, was when I played through the first level again after beating it once. The enemies in the first level were not force resistant, and I found I could hop my way around the level being the force wielding badass I wanted to be the entire game.
The Star Destroyer sequence also could have been epic, but was bogged down in a show of a developer trying to shoehorn game play where true game play was not needed.
It was a pretty fun game overall, and I don't regret playing it. But it leaves me wondering what could have been. And that's a feeling that sometimes, is more frustrating than playing a bad game outright.
great! more of those bloody snipers, i hated the arse off of them.
DLC isn't what's needed, a decent sequel would be much better.
a quick Google would show them everything they need to put right, not flog a dead Ton-Ton for a quick buck.
As much as the Kotaku readership hates on this game, it sold more than a shady Jawa speeder dealer.
It absolutely killed in just the places it should, Wal-Mart, Target, etc. When they have a whole shelf on the end of the aisle dedicated to one game, and it is *empty* by the end of the week, you can be sure that it did pretty well.
There's games that sell 1/10th of what this did that get a sequel.
On the other hand, Lucasarts won't make a new fucking Tie Fighter game, so maybe they have no idea what to do with a successful IP...
I liked the writing, so far as star wars goes. A little more Jedi Knight, a little more god of war level polish, you have a nice sounding game on your hands. (also dismemberment!)
Y'know, as much as people hate TFU, the framework for a decent game WAS in there. It's a shame that LucasArts won't make a sequel, because with a little more polish, they could have a really solid God of War clone on their hands.
I liked the story, and the gameplay wasn't even that bad; it just had it REALLY tough because it'll always be compared to better examples of the same kind of game.
@Archaotic: Well I never played any Star Wars game before this one. As someone who won't compare this to any others, got to say while it was entertaining, it wasn't exactly breathtaking.
I think if your a fan you'll love it regardless, but I mostly force myself to play through it since I already paid. It wasn't bad, just didn't keep my attention as much as I wanted to.
@Outkastprince: Yeah, I've played a LOT of Star Wars games. This one isn't one of the best, and it isn't one of the worst. It tried, though, and I can give them credit for that.
It just needed more time in development to hash out some of the kinks. I don't regret playing it though, I loved using Starkiller's Force telekinesis to destroy things (and people) that got in my way.
@G1bblets: @Indy_aka_Rex: You've both made the same point, and I'd agree with you, but look at what happened to Battlefront. BF2 did insanely well and what did they do? They killed off the studio making it and then cancelled the game.
Whatever rational fibers were left within LucasArts before TFU came out...they're gone, now. I don't trust them to make a single good decision at this point.
Don't lecture me, Owen! I see through the lies of the Kotaku Journalists. I do not fear the dark side as you do. I have brought peace, freedom, justice, and security to my new Empire...-coughs- Game.
Ugh, this was totally not worth the money. Would have been worth 400 MSPs, but certainly not 800. Took about 15 minutes to finish it (didn't take time to look for any hidden holocrons).
Which convinces me that the USE definitely won't be worth buying. If this had been some substantial DLC then I might have taken a chance on paying $40 just to get Hoth. But as it is? No way.
@Pornosaur: Yeah, I'd say it's worth the $40 if you haven't played it yet. The main story really is fun, if frustrating at times and kind of short. It's just the DLC that's been disappointing.
Normally I would buy the DLC, but you know what? Fuck them. Whoever came up with the plan of releasing the last DLC on disc only deserves to be shot... out of a cannon and into the sun. Thieving bastards.
@Tratzo: Yep. I posted a similar comment when it was first announced that the Hoth content would be only for the re-release, but I feel like I'm being punished for buying the game when it came out instead of waiting. Ironically, it's my money that likely helped to fund the Hoth content that I have no way to play.
LucasArts? Bullshit like this is why people pirate games. Just sayin'.
I only had any trouble with the Star Destroyer the very first time. Once you know how the Star Destroyer comes down, you can pretty much ignore the on-screen prompts and bring it down on instinct.
I'm very mad about this. I don't see why they don't offer the Hoth mission as DLC for those of us, the many of us, who already own TFU. I refuse to buy a new copy of a game I already own. I hope they see the error of their ways and offer this the way they should have from the begining. As DLC.
So, they will add trophy support for their game, but Kojima won't for his? I seriously can not believe Force Unleashed is getting a patch and MGS4 is not.
Hmm, a developer who actually supports the game months after launch...I'm almost compelled to get this game out of principal alone. New.
@excel_excel: Its funny. I rented the game and beat it when it first came out. And now that I just bought it for cheap, and haven't replayed it yet, they're gonna add trophies that would require me to replay anyways. Now all I have to do is hold out from playing until the trophies appear...
@EnigmaNemesis: When I replay, I'll probably go light side this time. My gf hates it when I do the evil path in games (especially in Fallout 3)...but its so fun. Muwhahaha. I think inFamous was the only game where I actually chose to do the good side.
I may just be a trophy junkie, but they really do add replayability for me. Plus, I just find throwing around stormtroopers fun as hell. haha
And I loved the story, but the one part where the guy is floating in space kinda bothered me...psssh, the force can't do that. But everything else was awesome!
@EnigmaNemesis: @Starshock: Like anduin said, you only need to replay the final level to get the other light/dark ending you missed the first time 'round. Since TFU has a level select in the menu, it's no big deal to replay one level... especially since the Death Star was my personal favorite bit, particularly holding a Stormtrooper in the middle of the firing tube as the intercom voice counts down: "Test firing in 3, 2, 1..." VOIP.

I was going to replay it and go to the dark side now, since I finished it when it came out with the light side in mind.
But now I will wait for trophies!!!
Loved the story too, would have been a BAD ASS movie!
