<![CDATA[The Straight Story of 'Gay Tony']]> Calling it "the straightest Grand Theft Auto ever," largely for effect, PopMatters' G. Christopher Williams says The Ballad of Gay Tony hews to some hetero-driven crime-novel representations of both sexualities, but in the end is about much deeper themes.

Warning, this discussion will contain spoilers of "The Ballad of Gay Tony," released Oct. 29.

"Club life is the central focus of The Ballad of Gay Tony, which brings us back to the sex act as a central concern of this version of GTA," Williams writes. "Gay" Tony Prince, not the player protagonist but certainly the game's "most crucial character," is the proprietor of two clubs, one gay and one straight, but it's the straight venue where the story is largely told.

But despite the game's title, and the dating/booty call mechanic of Luis' encounters with women in the club, where the story ends up is not about sex, homosexual or heterosexual, promiscuous or monogamous. It's in an "Oedipal drama" about two men coming to be a father and son, both men lacking the other family role model in their lives.

The Ballad of Gay Tony is the Straightest Grand Theft Auto Ever [PopMatters, Nov. 11.]

[...] Luis's promiscuity is complicated by his own background, which is as a son whose own father abandoned him. Curiously, this complication also connects him more closely to Tony. At several points over the course of the story, Luis suggests that Tony has been like a father to him, having been the one to get Luis employed and on the straight and narrow (or at least out of prison) after running afoul of the police in his younger days. Tony, too, mentions that Luis is like a son to him. Thus, the game is less than retrograde in presenting a rather daring and progressive version of a father-son story, one in which the "father" is a homosexual.

The Oedipal drama that would normally ensue in such stories is inverted, though, perhaps as a result of Tony's homosexuality. Luis is not especially threatened by his "father's" power as neither one compete with one another over a mother or any woman for that matter. Freud would suggest that such competition is a necessary part of the psychology of becoming an adult. The symbolic act of killing the father becomes foundational for becoming a mature adult capable of taking on the authority of being a father himself. However, when faced with the dilemma of having to literally kill Tony near the climax of the game (which is a result of some mobsters needing the head of one of the two men because a diamond heist has put the two into bed with and in the cross-hairs of several criminal organizations), Luis chooses to save the man (as Tony did the younger Luis) rather than to destroy him and take his place (as the mobsters offer Luis the opportunity to do). Indeed, throughout The Ballad of Gay Tony, Luis spends much of his time caring for this adopted "father" whose addiction is leading to some really bad decision making on the part of the elder of the two men. This curious re-structuring of the Oedipal conflict with a homosexual and a heterosexual father and son removes conflict from their relationship altogether and offers instead a co-operative version of the relationship in which one man brings up and nurtures the other and then the other likewise returns the favor.

Thus, despite Rockstar's frequent employment of stereotyping ethnic and sexual identity for the sake of parody, The Ballad of Gay Tony actually becomes a rather different kind of discourse on the development of human beings and their relationships to one another because of (not in spite of) their differences. Social deviance becomes a means of uniting very different people rather than in dividing them from society. Instead, Tony and Luis manage to form the most fundamental of social units out of deviance, a family.

- G. Christopher Williams

<![CDATA['Modern Warfare 2 in 60 Seconds' is 1:15 Long]]> Not a speed-run, but this Zero Punctuation-style rundown of Modern Warfare 2 provides a Cliffs Notes to the story for those who bought the game just for the multiplayer. For those who bought it for the singleplayer, bigtime spoiler alert.

That means don't press play if you don't want all the story highlights, plot twists, outcomes and the conclusion. Otherwise spend a minute on this and then get back to your Search & Destroy and your perks grindin'.

<![CDATA[ESRB On Assassin's Creed II's "Seduction Mini-Game," "Strong Sexual Overtones"]]> Just when you think that Assassin's Creed II is going to feature throat-slitting violence and fountains of blood in a family friendly manner, Ubisoft crosses the line by putting "strong sexual overtones," as thoroughly described by the ESRB.

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board has issued the Assassin's Creed sequel a "Mature" rating, pointing out the potentially offensive "blood, intense violence, sexual content, and strong language" featured in the game.

The ESRB goes into great detail—with potential spoilers!—about the "sexual content" players may experience in Assassin's Creed II, including an interactive mini-game in which "players are able to press buttons to kiss a woman and remove her dress; with the woman's back facing the camera, the two characters lower to bed and blow out a candle." Oh my!

Oh and it gets so much more unsavory, at least from a dialogue standpoint, as references to S&M, page-boy diddling, rape and other deviant acts not fit for print in this publication are made throughout the game. Plus, there's naughty language in both English and Italian!

Will someone please think of the children? Preferably not while reading this snippet of the ESRB's description, pasted below, but afterward.

The game contains strong sexual overtones. During one "seduction mini-game," players are able to press buttons to kiss a woman and remove her dress; with the woman's back facing the camera, the two characters lower to bed and blow out a candle. Some scenes take place inside brothels, though no nudity or sexual acts are depicted. The dialogue contains the following sexual references: "So the whip or the paddle today?" and "Does your wife know about your page-boy fantasies, Captain?"

Character backstories, narrated through still-frame vignettes, explain how villains and historical figures achieved their notoriety; some biographies include references to adultery, sodomy, prostitution, and rape (e.g., "Caterina was captured and sent to Rodrigo Borgia . . . who kept her imprisoned for a year and is rumored to have raped her alongside his son.").

One cutscene depicts a man and a woman wearing translucent, flesh-toned bodysuits as they flee from danger. The digitized lighting effects, the glow from their futuristic suits, obscure most of the details, though outlines of breasts and buttocks are partially discernable (i.e., not definitively nudity).

Consumers may also wish to know that the game contains strong profanity, both in English and Italian (e.g., "f**k," "sh*t," c*zzo," and "m*rda"); the most explicit instance occurs when a man frantically describes a "vision"-"I'm at the opera . . . the soprano is so beautiful . . . I'm in bed with her, she cries as I f**k her."

Ack! My eyes!!

<![CDATA[Alan Wake Devs Might Withhold Ending from Preview Copies]]> Alan Wake's developers are concerned enough about spoilers getting out that they'll talk with Microsoft about keeping the game's ending out of copies sent to the press in advance of its release.

G4TV quotes the Remedy Entertainment managing director Matias Myllrinne as saying the studio is "insanely careful" about how much of the story it'll give away, and that, if it were his call, he'd hold back the ending.

"I think we're going to be insanely careful about how much of the story we reveal. We'll clearly discuss with some of our friends at Microsoft whether we even give the ending of the game for anybody's preview. I'd like to hold it back, [I] don't want anybody to spoil it for the audience. That's just my personal feeling."

Myllrinne goes on to talk about spoilers and how devastating they can be to a well written story, using the analogy of being told that Bruce Willis' character in The Sixth Sense is dead. What?! He is?! Spoiler alert, Matias, dammit, spoiler alert!!!

<![CDATA[Modern Warfare 2 Killstreak Rewards Revealed?]]> The early PC Xbox 360 leak of Modern Warfare 2 continues to churn spoilers. Yesterday we saw the video of what you get for an eyepopping kill streak of 25. Someone's posted a list of rewards for all the others.

The site Gamepex has posted, without attribution, the full list. Take it with a heaping helping of salt, but as we saw yesterday, if they're willing to put a tactical nuke in this sucker, then I think anything's believable short of a spaceship.

I've asked Robert Bowling if he'd like to say anything about this. Any comment will be updated here. Update: via Twitter, Bowling says: "Can't confirm nor deny any leaks for #MW2. Official stance is to just wait and discover the awesome yourself on November 10th."

<![CDATA[Spies Dig Up 20 of 23 Spec Ops Names in Modern Warfare 2]]> Ever since folks noticed Infinity Ward types playing Modern Warfare 2 over Xbox Live, some have been glued to their sets for map and mission names. They've now gotten nearly the full mission list for MW2's Spec Ops.

Spoiler alert, as the names of these might give away general mission details or capabilities. if you don't want to know this, I'm going to blather and give some filler details while you move up to that big back button on your browser and avert your eyes from anything in yellow below. It's worth noting that the reason the IW-watchers can get the mission names is because Spec Ops has a lobby unto itself. The Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling's gamer card bears that out.

OK, now that we've gotten the spoiler alerts and those who don't want to be spoiled out of the way, here are the mission names spotted so far, according to user AchievementLost on the Infinity Ward forums. These are assumed to be not in order.

The list points to origin stories for six character classes - Human Noble, Dalish Elf, City Elf, Magi, Dwarf Commoner and Dwarf Noble. <![CDATA[List of Warcraft Expansion Content Leaves No Rumor Unturned]]> A truckload of details and features, alleged to be included in the as-yet unnanounced World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, has made its way out to the interwebs. This gets both spoiler alert and rumor treatment in the strongest terms possible.

MMO Champion has put together this list, saying it comes from multiple sources. One of them is a thread on Something Awful, so caveat reader. And this sort of thing almost always precedes a Warcraft expansion.

But the list is much deeper than the earlier speculation on two new playable races. If you're interested and don't mind ruining the surprise, go check out MMO Champion. Highlights - spoiler alert - are said to include;

• Level cap raised to 85.

• No new classes, but some classes will be made available to races that weren't before.

• Two new races, Goblins and Worgen, as has been speculated.

• A remake of classic Azeroth

I've emailed Blizzard to ask if they have any comment. If they do, I'll update back here.

<![CDATA[World at War Map Pack 3 Adds 10 New Achievements]]> The four maps - three regular, one zombie - being added next month to Call of Duty: World at War will bring with them 10 new achievements, one of them hinting at some unusual weaponry.

"Acquire Waffle Weapons!" is earned once you pick up the "Ray Gun," "DG-2" and "Monkey Bomb" at the same time. There's also a mention of a teleporter. I haven't played CoD:WaW in a while, but this is the first I've heard of any ray guns. Sounds like the game's getting a little pulp science-fictiony with secret weapons of the Third Reich.

The full list is below. They went up on the official site July 23.

• 40 Knives!:
Kill 40 zombies with the bowie knife.
• Acquire Waffle Weapons!:
Obtain the Ray Gun, DG-2, and the Monkey Bomb at the same time in a game.

• Der electrican!:

• Frequent Flyer!:
Use the teleporter 8 times.

• Locksmith!:

• The Might of the Monkey!:
Use the Monkey Bomb.

• Perkaholics Anonymous!:
Survive untill round 20 without buying a single perk.

• Pack Addict!:

<![CDATA[Another Pic of Wolverine's Secret Areas]]> Friday, Fahey dug up a screenshot of X-Men Origins: Wolverine's homage to Warcraft. A reader sent us a screengrab of another crossover marvel, one of two mentioned in the game's achievement list. Obligatory spoiler alert.

The first hidden area is understandable - Activision/Blizzard publish both Warcraft and Wolverine. Although it's not specifically invoked, and Valve hasn't, like, copyrighted cake itself, as a game meme it's definitely associated with Portal.

What do you think, one's kind of clever, but two - as achievements - was Raven just running out of stuff to fill up 1,000 gamerscore?

Thanks to J Rock for the screen. To find the cake, he says it's on the level where you're supposed to rescue Wraith. "t's at the section with the teleporter and cryo freeze controls next to each other. Move the teleporter all the way right into this room, then teleport using the pad next to you in the control room."

The achievements are "Aiding the Outcasts," "The Guns of Anchorage," "Paving the Way" and "Operation Anchorage." Of course, we knew about "Operation Anchorage" already. Guess these are the three missions of the DLC pack that hits Tuesday for 800 Microsoft Points, and then the big 40 point achievement is given out if you finish the new quest entirely. <![CDATA[Fable II's Knothole Island Brings Good Things To Life]]> Without spoiling more than I already have, a post over on the Fable II dev blog indicates that players disappointed by their particular ending can find solace at Knothole Island's mysterious resurrection shrine.

Before you continue on, I warn you....this post could very well ruin the ending of Fable II for you, but it wouldn't be my fault. Blame Sam Van Tilburgh over at the Fable 2 Development blog, who name checks us in the post where he draws readers' attentions towards one particular bullet point on the Knothole Island page. <![CDATA[New ESRB Ratings Tread Into Spoiler Territory]]> This week, when the ESRB reported new ratings guidelines, and two senators seem pleased, but if you're curious how a game like Fallout 3 gets treated in the more descriptive write-ups, be warned, because they can be so specific they give away huge parts of the story.

In the rollout of the new ratings, we gave a Call of Duty: World at War writeup that completely described most everything that someone might find objectionable about it, without giving away the story. (Besides, I think we know how World War II turned out, right?) GameSpot, however, notes that:

The ESRB write-ups can also include details of plot twists and other spoilers. One line from the Resistance 2 write-up omitted in the quote above reveals a significant plot detail from a climactic moment of the game. Fallout 3 is another title with a key revelation included in the summary.

It's at this point where my interest as a gamer triumphs over my responsibility to you as your weekend editor. I have both, I intend to play both, and I don't want to ruin the big reveal of a $60 title. But like Brian, I do wonder who is going to be handling these writeups and how, if at all, publishers will try to manage spoilers that are of a nature that must be revealed under the new rules.
