I saw both this and Blur at E3. I didn't have the opportunity to play it, but the visuals, innovative HUD, and sense of speed were amazing, especially compared to Blur. Both of these games are ostensibly Mario Kart with a Burnout skin, which to me is a great thing. But Split/Second looked to have a tighter track design with more bottlenecks and narrow escapes, whereas Blur tracks were very wide and allowed players to miss a lot of the action, and it also added to the sense of it being slow.

Everyone should think back to the PS2 before they ever played or heard of Burnout, and look forward to what Split/Second can potentially bring to the table. I think it has a lot of promise and the developers, if nothing else, created a game which appears to be very tight and well put together.

@IvanDashSmith: I got confused when you mentioned Mario Kart. Mario kart is a fun game that isn't very pressurized or detailed. This game looks like it will make people piss themselves in suspense in trying to get past the person they are racing. Definately nothing like mario Kart in any way.

@AgentSnake: Yeah I did a terrible job describing that. I guess it would make more sense as Burnout with Mario Kart style battling. That make more sense?

This was fun at PAX, but really for the full experience you need a nice set with good sound.

How about "Michael Bay Presents: A Driving Game." With bay in the title you know stuff will be blowing up.

But hey, that trailer looks pretty slick. Nice ideas.

I'mnot a fan of racing games. They just can't keep my attention because there's (usually) no story. Driving around a track, even if it's a made up track through an open city, gets very mudane.

But racing while having the power to blow shit up? I can definitely get behind that.

What I want to know is: Does it have a replay function?

It's something I've really missed in current gen race games like MotorStorm, Wipeout HD and Burnout: Paradise.

@Showmeyomoves!: Heeey what about Grid? Very good racer, plus the desired replay function.

This game would definatly benifit from replays for that perfct race where you obliterate just about everything on the track.

Well, it does look gorgeous and the twist sounds really interesting but I'm concerned about the execution of it, theres so many things they could do wrong and alternatively right.

If I can try a demo I honestly think I might pick this up. Until then I reserve judgment.

    It sure looks promising though.

The first racing game I'm looking forward this gen (aside from Mario Kart). So far, racing games this gen are more focused on simulation (which I don't like) or just more of the same (which I got tired after NFSU2).

Nice to see something new on the racing genre.

@CockroachMan: No kidding. Such an amazing combination. I'm horrible at creating levels, but I can't wait to see what other people think up.

And also, those guys above are right. If you like Burnout games, check out Paradise. It's definitely not as good as, say, Burnout 3, but there's plenty of replay value, and I'm pretty sure it's not more than $20 these days for either the 360 or Ps3 -- so even if you don't like the open world aspect to it, it wasn't like you threw down a huge investment on the game!

I got a chance to play this at Eurogamer, and by god what a great game. I'm seriously calling the concept genius.

The amount of stuff you need to focus on at once is damn near overwhelming, but in the good way, You'll get that panicky feeling when you're just about to overtake someone and you know they could trigger that huge building ahead to collapse.

It's literally just adrenaline in video game form.

@OkayOctane: What I love is that the HUD is on the tail of your car, almost seamlessly in some cases. It gives the sides of the screens more space and makes you feel more immersed into the game.

@Shinta: @Manly_McBeeferton: I completely forgot the mention that, it was one of the first things I noticed. Walking up to the screen I thought "No hud? That's weird.." it is so well incorporated, and it's in just the right place that you don't every have to actually look at it, it's just there.

There's so many smaller touches that make the game great as a whole. For example, if you collapse a huge building, the shockwave will hit you and start to push you one way, you fighting to stay on course. It literally feels like things are going by at a million miles an hour, and you just need to survive.

@Manly_McBeeferton: I was just looking at that, I think this is a day 1 purchase for me, after GTpsp was a little bit of a let down in terms of fun, I need a bit of silly racing to get me into the genre again.

Also, bring on mod nation racers!

It's an arcade racer. In arcade racers, damage to cars NEVER affects performance. That would be kind of a deal breaker for me, actually.

Big 'ol nothankyou.jpg to the whole damaged-cars-drive-like-crap. From what I've seen of this game, that'd be like asking for the player in an FPS to start limping and then finally fall over before dying. Doesn't sound fun at all.

Personally I found the controls too basic. Other than steering all I could control was stop, go, and blow shit up. As far as I could tell the drifting was automatic.

I'll also forgive it for being still in development, but the collision box for the car felt too large.

Also needing improvement, the car-based HUD. Presented beautifully and easy to read, but way too little information.
