Our Spike TV Video Game Award Picks |

Best Driving Game: I wholeheartedly agree with Burnout Paradise. It's tons of fun, good soundtrack, custom soundtrack support, lots of things to do if you don't want to just mess around. It's simply high quality.
Best Teams Sports Game: Eh, I think it's time to stop rewarding EA for Madden. They aren't really making it much better anymore, and the game lacks much of the depth and sim qualities it once had. The only redeeming factor to Madden this year to me is multiplayer. Sure, Madden is an easy pick, the sales, and a large portion of the public support it. But sales =/= quality. I think the demand for the NFL and football games helps Madden succeed despite its laziness more than some know.
This award should go to another team sport game, or even NFL Head Coach 09. That sales probably aren't there, but some of the developers from past Madden franchise modes worked on this game, took what Madden has had and made it better.
Some tough categories there.

I'm predicting Left 4 Dead will win their Game of the Year in an upset. If not, it'll go to Little Big Planet. I suppose MGS4 could claim the prize. Of course I'm rooting for Gears 2, Dead Space or Fallout 3 (preferably Gears 2).

Yes, we're just as puzzled as you might be that games like Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, Dead Space and GRID were overlooked in certain categories.

Little Big Planet.

(((Best Shooter: Far Cry 2)))
I'd go with Gears of War 2.
(((Best RPG: Fallout 3)))
Agree. Definitely.
(((Best Fighting Game: Soulcalibur IV)))
Agree again. Good pick.
(((Best Handheld Game: God of War: Chains of Olympus)))
Definitely.
(((Best Graphics: Metal Gear Solid 4)))
I'd give the edge to Gears of War 2, followed closely by MGS4 and Dead Space.
(((Best Game Based on a Movie or TV Show: LEGO Indiana Jones)))
No doubt about it. I had so much fun playing this game with my cousins. I actually liked it better than the Lego Star Wars games.
(((Best Action Adventure Game: Dead Space)))
I'd go with this one as well, unless Gears of War 2 was in the running and then that would be my pick.
(((Best Soundtrack: Rock Band 2)))
RB2 gets the edge for letting you play your RB1 songs and downloadable content. Otherwise, they're a tie for me (RB2 and GH:WT).
(((Best Xbox 360 Game: Gears of War 2)))
You're not going to get any arguments from me on this one.
(((Best Wii Game: No More Heroes)))
If Okami counted, that would be my pick. If it has to be an original game, then I'd probably select No More Heroes, even though I got sort of bored with it by the middle.
(((Best PS3 Game: Metal Gear Solid 4)))
Resistance 2. Haven't played Little Big Planet enough to rank it.
(((Best Multiplayer Game: Left 4 Dead)))
Gears of War 2
It's not hard to figure out what my personal "game of the year" is (Gears 2). I was really loving Fallout 3, but decided to stop playing until NXE when I could run it straight from my hard drive. When is NXE hitting, anyway?

Just wish I knew the hour. Getting past my bedtime, but if it's out in the next say, 60 minutes, I'd stay up to play around with it for a while. If it's going to be longer than that, it's time to go to bed wish visions of Spike TV Video Game Award Picks dancing around in my head.

(((Best Game You Play Instruments)))
Gears of War 2
(((Best Wii Game)))
Gears of War 2
(((Best PS3 Game)))
Gears of War 2
....dude, did you even play some of the games Kotaku has nominated.
Left 4 dead is way better multi than Gears 2
Graphics wise Far Cry is more impressive than metal gear and gears 2. Sorry, just because you add an intense bumpmap to everything does not put that as best graphics. (It is pretty tho, I LOVE gears 1 and 2)
... and as long as I am disagreeing, I'd say the NHL 09 beats Madden any day. But hey, I love hockey so maybe tht's just biased. :)

I'm not "all Gears all the time". If both BioShock and Gears 2 were released in '08, I'd pick BioShock for best graphics and BioShock for best shooter and BioShock for Game of the Year. Gears 2 just shines in this particular year because there isn't a say, BioShock. That's not to take anything away from Gears 2 -- it's an amazing game.
Far Cry 2 for best graphics? Really? I guess if you like realistic sand. They pull that off well. And the fire looks nice. Sarcasm aside, it did have nice graphics, but not much variety and the visuals weren't as good as Gears 2. Outside of the first few fires in the game, there wasn't any real "WOW!" moments for me. Bumpmapping, whatever -- I know what I like and Gears 2 made me exclaim, "WOW!" a number of times.

Also NO MORE HEROES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course that's just your opinion. That said, I agree.

I don't really think it is arguable, nothing else stands out. All I can think of is mgs4, fallout 3 and gears of war 2 as being even close to considerable, but GTAIV had a lot more content, better world, the best soundtrack, by far the best story, emotional character development. Plus more importantly, it sold more than the other 3 put together and had the highest review scores.

My grief is GTA4 is all the things they removed from it, like most GTA fans will tell you. As a driving/third person shooter it really is a fantastic game, but honestly it's a poor GTA game. Play San Andreas, you'll see what I mean. The story was okay, nothing mind-blowing and Nikko as a character just doesn't sit well with me.
There are no missions like the Area 51 one or like any of "Truth's" at all. No customization, barely any clothes, any guns, no RPG elements, etc. It's amazing for what it does, but it sucks a lot for what it doesn't.
San Andreas also had a better world. Yes GTA4 is New York and that's great, but it's *just* NYC. SA had deserts, forests, each city was unique, etc.
Last gen Rockstar also put better soundtracks in their games, both Midnight Club 3 and San Andreas put GTA4 to shame in that department.
Nikko acts like a hitman but speaks and makes decisions like a bitch. The part of his life I was most interested in (his past) they barely touched upon. CJ was not the best protagonist ever, but at least he was consistent, his story was really linked to his past and everyone around him felt important. His brother was the opposite of Nikko's clown cousin for example.
Notice that I compare GTA4 more to last gen games than games that came out this year. It's because I feel like all the others went forward, but GTA4 went backwards on too many levels.
For that reason I would give the award to a proper sequel like MGS4 or a new franchise like LBP/ Dead Space, and I'm sure more than one person would agree. GTA4 is more like "best promise of what's to come" than "game of the year" imo. Still a must-have though.
