The latter is enhanced by the downloadable "New Goblin," formerly a PlayStation 3 exclusive feature but now available to whomever is willing to shell out 240 Microsoft Points. You'll still have to defeat him in-game to add him to the unlockable character list, but think of the bragging right(s)!

Also available is the "6 Treasures" pack for Mistwalker's Blue Dragon. For the low, low price of 200 Microsoft Points, you'll get a half-dozen new items that will boost your stats and give you access to new abilities. The specific details on each are after the jump.

1) "Whimsical Mind" - growth item that enhances a few randomly-picked categories by 0-4 levels

2) "Way of Thieves" - in-battle item that can steal rare items possessed by enemy creatures

3) "Devee Phonograph" - allows you to listen to the "Devee-tribe dance"

4) "Nothing Glasses" - visualizes all "nothing" points by means of a star-looking symbol (oftentimes you'll find a lot of items that contain "nothing", followed by an English-speaking narrator saying "nothing").

5) "Shuffled Helmet" - item that adjusts magical and speed parameters (Magic +40 / Speed -40). Detrimental when used by itself because the speed parameter goes down by 50 points, but when equipped along with "Shuffled Breastplate" and "Shuffled Splint", this item can quadruplicate the Magic parameters and reverse the Speed parameters. So it becomes the strongest equipment in the game. (Magic +160 / Speed +40)

6) "Spring-wind Scarf" - adjusts characters' HP and Speed parameters by 20%

There's even more digital stuff for you to pretend to own. The DLC run down is over at Major Nelson's internet house.

<![CDATA[Spider-Man 3 PSP Finally Released]]> spidermanpsp.jpgPersonally I had assumed they had just scrapped the PSP version of Spider-Man 3 considering the critical beating its console cousins took at the hands of nearly every reviewer imaginable, but apparently Activision has some sort of 'no platform left behind' philosophy, as they've just announced it's imminent arrival on retail store shelves, where it will most likely spend the remainder of its days save for a few unsuspecting parents hunting for Christmas gifts and people confusing it for Spider-Man: Friend or Foe. The PSP version does feature an exclusive Conquest Mode that adds a time element to missions, but conversely subtracts an analog stick, adding a frustrating element to the missions. It has been a few months now though, so maybe they took some time to polish it up? Could this be the ultimate version of Spider-Man 3? Nope.

ACTIVISION LAUNCHES SPIDER-MAN 3™ FOR THE PSP® (PLAYSTATION® PORTABLE) SYSTEM ONTO RETAIL SHELVES NATIONWIDE

Santa Monica, CA - October 9, 2007 - Fans of Marvel's Spider-Man can now unleash the power of the Black Suit while on the go with the release of Activision, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ATVI) Spider-Man 3™ for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system. Set in the first fully-streaming Spider-Man environment for the PSP system, the game gives players the freedom to choose their own gameplay experience as they master Spider-Man's unique and powerful skill-sets and abilities while also experiencing his darker, more mysterious persona, Black-Suited Spider-Man, through multiple movie-based and original storylines.

In Spider-Man 3 for the PSP system, players must draw upon Spider-Man's unique combat and powerful, upgradeable moves to protect the citizens of Manhattan by defeating arch-rivals from the blockbuster film as well as classic Marvel villains during missions and epic boss battles. In the PSP system exclusive Conquest Mode, missions must be completed by dawn, and if successful, players will be rewarded generously with Hero Points, which allow them to upgrade and customize their Spider-Man skills.

Spider-Man 3 for the PSP system is available at retail stores nationwide for a suggested retail price of $39.99 and has been rated "T" (Teen - Animated Blood, Mild Language, Violence) by the ESRB.

<![CDATA[Vicarious Visions Blindsided By Closure]]> Gamasutra is reporting that Vicarious Visions' California location has been shuttered by publisher Activision, laying off many, possibly all, of its employees. The team was responsible for the Wii, DS, Game Boy Advance and PlayStation 2 versions of Spider-Man 3, most recently. Reaction to those titles was mixed, with some critics calling it "lackluster" while others felt it was "crummy."

Vicarious Visions New York-based location appears to be unaffected by the cuts.

So, for the record, this week's employment shake-ups include SCEA, the ESA, Nintendo of America, and now Vicarious Visions. What a world!

<![CDATA[Video Games Are Not Beach Towells]]>

Hollywood types, forget what you've heard. Video games are not beach towels. Or even coffee mugs. No, not anymore says Activision's Daniel Suarez. And he would know! (Activision recently released a Spider-Man 3 game, which can be best summed up in one word: Broken.) As Activision rolls out *another* movie game adaptation with Transformers: The Game, Suarez has this insight:

Video games are no longer considered another licensed consumer product like a coffee cup or beach towel like they were about 10 years ago. Film makers, studio executives and nearly everyone involved in the production, marketing and promotion of a film are now gamers or have kids who are gamers. This makes the process of developing a working relationship with the film makers and the studio a lot easier as they have a greater understanding of your end goal and have built up sensibilities about the video game medium that allows them to contribute thoughts and ideas to better integrate the intellectual property into the game.

That's a nice sell and all, but I'm as nervous about movie-game adaptations as I am about game-move adaptations. You?

<![CDATA[Spider-Man Tops GameFly's Most Wanted]]>

Man, there are going to be a lot of people disappointed when they get their GameFly game rentals in. According to the service's latest most wanted list Spider-Man 3 takes four of the top ten positions.

The 360 version is listed as the most wanted game, while the PS2 is number two, the PS3 version is number five and the Wii version is number seven.

I'll write up my impressions later this week, but in a nutshell the game is, at best, a mixed bag. Very mixed. Oh and it made me TREMENDOUSLY motion sick.

1 Spiderman 3 Xbox 360
2 Spiderman 3 PlayStation 2
3 Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars Xbox 360
4 Shadowrun Xbox 360
5 Spiderman 3 PlayStation 3
6 Super Paper Mario Wii
7 Spiderman 3 Wii
8 Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Xbox 360
9 Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 Xbox 360
10 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Xbox 360

<![CDATA[Clip: PS3 Spiderman 3 Game Intro]]>

Still not sure if you're going to buy the Spiderman 3 game? Well here's a clip that will either repel or attract you depending on your opinion of the character models. There is something inherently creepy about 3D characters modeled after real life people, especially celebrities since we are so used to what they look like. The models always seem.. I don't know.. off somehow.

I am, however, intrigued by the gang of flouncy skirted dames jumping off the roof of a building Mary Poppins style with their parasols aloft. I think I might have to buy the game just so I can see what they're all about.

<![CDATA[Spider-Man Movie Should Help... Spider-Man Game]]>

Gotta love the pundits! The first two Spider-Man games took approximately $300 million in sales. Wonder how the third game is going to do? Common sense says "very well." But, screw common sense and bring on the sound bytes! Here's NPD video game analyst Anita Frazier who says:

The Spider-Man video games based on the first two movies are some of the most successful movie tie-in games in history. I would expect that the third would experience success as well.

And if that's not enough to seal the game's fate, quote-machine and Wedbush Morgan video game analyst Michael Pachter adds:

I think it's going to do extremely well.

Thanks Anita, Mike. Insightful.

<![CDATA[SPIDERMAN 3 Game Has More Story Than Movie]]>

You've seen the font, but not the new movie. SPIDERMAN 3 hits theaters May 1st and Activision's bringing the video game version. The game features voice acting from the film's actors, and the world has been expanded to include miles of subterranean settings like sewers and subways as well as buildings and rooftops. Says Activision's Rob Kostich:

Having the actors in the game adds to the authenticity of the experience and really brings it to life...The movie story line is only one of 10 story lines we have in the game... I think the actors in this game have a huge appreciation for what video games have to offer, and some do play quite a bit.

Well, durr. Tobey Maguire had a small role in The Wizard!

<![CDATA[Clip: Spider-Man 3 Goblin Trailer]]>

This new trailer gives you a glimpse of the Goblin in action, but it looks to be mostly non-gameplay. Mostly, it makes me wish that I could play as the Goblin instead of Spiderman.

<![CDATA[Spider-Man 3 Trailer Not As Intoxicating As Promised]]>

GameTrailers has an extended look at what appears to be footage of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Activision's upcoming game adaptation of the Sam Raimi film. Featuring in-game looks at the Sandman, Venom and whatever the hell Harry Osborn is supposed to be, Spider-Man 3 The Game doesn't look bad, necessarily, it just hasn't convinced me to add to my Spider-Man videogame collection.

For the record, my Spider-Man videogame collection consists solely of the 1991 Sega Genesis game Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin which was horrid.

<![CDATA[PS3 Gets Spidey 3 Exclusive]]> The good news is that Sony has secured at least one more exclusive for the console seemingly allergic to exclusives, the PLAYSTATION 3. The bad news is that it's simply a collector's edition treatment for the upcoming Activision video game based on Sony Pictures' Spider-Man 3.

While that made sound a tad unexciting, the bonuses should be of interest to Spider-fans as they include exclusive "Webisodes", behind the scenes clips, trailers and even a new playable character, pictured above. Yep, that's the "New Goblin" from the third Spidey flick and he'll be controlled with (wait for it...) SIXAXIS motion wizardry.

IGN has additional in-depth details on what folks itching to spend $70 on the next Spider-Man game can expect.

<![CDATA[Clip: Spiderman 3 Trailer]]>

Spiderman 3: The Game, not to be confused with Spiderman 3: The Movie, swings on to just about every console and handheld available on May 5th, hot on the heels of the film's May 4th opening. Unlike many trailers we see, this one is made up entirely of actual gameplay footage. I must say that the graphics look pretty impressive and I can't wait to start slinging webs all over NYC. As for the movie... I don't know. Something about the thought of Topher Grace as Venom just rubs me the wrong way.
