Boo! Condolences to those dudes, Web of Shadows was great fun and I was looking forward to seeing what else they could do with their killer aerial combat engine.
And how does GH5 factor into it? Is the Neversoft team going to get "demoted" back to skating games?
Since Guitar Hero came out in 2005, Activision has released no less than 12 titles under the Guitar Hero name. Yes, some were platform exclusive, but still ... that's massive oversaturation - and it shows a really short-term view taken by the company leadership.
That is, unless the goal of the current management is to make as much as possible in a short time and jump ship with the money before it goes down.
Don't be surprised if this is the ultimate outcome.
@jayntampa: Activision needs to realize this. Sure you cash in early on but you kill your lasting appeal. Instead of making money on it for the next 10 years, you make money on it for maybe 2 or 3 and then everybody is sick of it.
Understandable under current business conditions (no kids, the recession has not ended regardless of what Benny tell us), but too bad for them. WoS had its share of flaws but in the end was a far more entertaining package than overhyped (in comparison) Prototype. It'd be unfortunate if those dismal and out of place review scores for that game were part of the reason they were let go.
Following the closures of Shabba and 7 Studios Activision has closed down Treyarch developer of several Call of Duty and Spiderman games.
Activsion cited repeated delayed development of Call of Duty:World at Warcrcraft due in the bulging Q1 2010 line-up. Delays had set the game back to a projected Q4 2010. Activsion have passed development onto Neversoft Studios as "they seem to be able to knock out sequels pretty damn fast"
@deanbmmv: Update: Activsion share's have plummeted follwing the news of a third clousre in as many days.
Robert Kotick has been forcibly removed as CEO of the company on the grounds the man seems to have gone quiet insane.
Mark Hamill celebrated this news in his own little way, all other gamers in the universe are celebrating normally.
*scratches head*
Wasn't GH5 made by Neversoft? If so, why lay off in other studios? I don't think that's the main reason.
Anyway, I fear for people working in an Activision studio. Because if GH5 is enough to cut into 2 dev teams, ooooh boy, wait until Van Halen, DJ Hero and Band Hero.
Guitar Hero doesn't sell, and Activision has to lay people off and close studios?
Think they'll take this as a sign that maybe they should slow down with the music games? Something tells me Band Hero and Van Halen won't reverse this trend...
@Archaotic: Great pic. Somebody absolutely had to make this. Not that his usual "Bobby Kotick, Serial Rapistâ„¢"-look wasn't enough :D
But well, I can't really blame Activision for this. Web of Shadows could have been such a great game - but, well, it became nearly as generic as all of the Spider-Man movie games.
@Archaotic: I see your Kotick Devil and raise you my Kotick-Zombie. I swear this assholes gonna make a game out of having players kill him knowing that would sell.
@Archaotic: of course I know that Activision is to blame for the overall game quality to some extent, but I suppose they didn't do the storywriting for the game. I mean, come on, Venom infecting all of Manhattan just for fun (because you don't really know why he does it) isn't really much to work on...
@manto247: Activision doesn't care if a game is generic. The fact that the studio was closed had nothing to do with how "generic" their Spiderman game was. It's all about sales. Not enough $$$ coming in equals the axe.
I know this isn't the forum for this, but is there a list anywhere of games where the camera DOES work properly? just wondering what good examples of camera are, since the latest titles all seem to share this flaw.
I always wonder why they make spider-man geeky character who gained powers. Ya he was geeky before but once he got his powers the only people who thought he was geeky were his high school classmates. He even had really REALLY big muscles (especially 80's spider-man).
@LandMineLandSnake: he NEVER had really big muscles. His spider powers tightened his muscle structure sorta like how captain america was an unfit toothpick before he got the super soldier serum.

This reminds me a lot of the closure of Dynamix at the hands of Vivendi Universal, damn them.

HE HUNGERS FOR PROFITS! THOSE WHO STAND AGAINST HIM SHALL FALL IN A HAIL OF BLOOD AND MONEY!
...seriously, fuck Kotick. He's just become a cartoon villain at this point. He doesn't care who he hurts as long as his bottom line stays the same.

Problem is, they exercise such strict regulations over their developers that a game like that is essentially doomed from the start.
