Wouldn't that be surprising?

After the listing was dug up by PS3 Center, the digital audio recording facility pulled the SOCOM sequel mention—but not before Google cached it—along with one for Syphon Filter 5.

Yes, the same rumored Syphon Filter we posted about in February (from the same source), which must have lead someone to believe that Syphon Filter 5 was also in development at Sony Bend. Potentially another massive megaton that another entry in a very successful series of shooters would get another iteration.

PlayStation marketing honcho Peter Dille indicated to us way back in 2007 that the multiplayer-focused SOCOM Confrontation wasn't the only entry in the series we'd see on the PlayStation 3. If SOCOM 4 is it, we'd expect a return to some of the single-player story driven campaigns seen in previous entries.

Of course, PCB Productions may have gotten the naming of these sequels off. That "in development" status could be old (see the "in development" notation for Frame City Killers). And how this entry could possibly be referred to as the fourth entry in the series is a bit confusing, since SOCOM: Combined Assault followed SOCOM 3. But we just work here.

SOCOM developer Zipper Interactive is hard at work on MAG right now, but if it didn't have another SOCOM in development, you could knock us over with a feather.

<![CDATA[Second SOCOM coming to PS3]]> While talking to SCEA Marketing Maven Peter Dille earlier this month, we slipped onto the topic of SOCOM Confrontation, the online-only PS3 shooter that will be sold as a downloadable title in the Sony store.

I told him I was surprised that such a strong franchise would make its PlayStation 3 debut in a form that didn't include a single-player campaign. Dille said Confrontation was a chance for the developers to focus on a specific type of play for a specific type of player and that it wouldn't be the only SOCOM game coming to the PS3.

"In the case of SOCOM: Confrontation, the SOCOM franchise has been around for awhile and (the developers) were focused on a style of play that hasn't been tapped yet," Dille said. "I don't think people should conclude that it will be the be all and end all of the SOCOM franchise."

The idea that SOCOM 4 or something like it will be coming to the PlayStation 3 is sort of a no-brainer, but it does the heart good to hear that coming straight from SCEA's mouth.

<![CDATA[SOCOM 4 Rumored Name: "Combined Assault"]]>

Always up for pre-orders on hopes and dreams, GameStop is taking reservations for Zipper Interactive's upcoming SOCOM game. There are rumblings that the game will be a PS3 launch title, and the retailer lists this SOCOM title as dropping this November for the PS2. Pure speculation at this point, but SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals Combine Assault could be that rumored fourth game.

<![CDATA[PS3 Getting SOCOM 4 at Launch?]]> A Computer and Video Games' informant tipped them off to a couple of Sony's big E3 surprises. First, the tipster says that SOCOM 4 will be shown, is looking beautiful and is expected for launch on PS3. A PS2 version is also in the works. God of War for PS3 is also well underway, though it may not be ready for E3 (wtf). And lastly, Insomniac (the team behind the excellent Ratchet & Clank games) renamed their first person shooter to Resistance. Is this tipster's crystal ball cloudy or clear? E3 can't get here soon enough.
