We're big video game shoe fans here at Kotaku, though Crecente's collection is far greater than mine. Perhaps I will 1UP him with a pair of Splatterhouse Superfly high tops. I am lacking in the sneaker department at the moment, and I do like the "moody yet playful" combination of red and black used to add that Splatterhouse flair to the Superfly design. Or I might not, seeing as the product page over at Club Namco only lists them up to size 11.5, and I am a size 13. Oh well. Crecente and his baby feet win once again.

<![CDATA[Grim Fandango Shoes Make Purple Sneakers Possible]]> Purple sneakers? Hah. Nothankyou. Oh! Unless they're custom purple Cons covered in Grim Fandango artwork. Now that, that we can consider.

Reader Tonks - who also made those Noby Noby and Phoenix Wright kicks - sends us his latest work, showing that his love, like ours, is as strong as ever for Tim Schafer's wonderful adventure game.

And as strong as ever for wonderful video game sneakers. Even if they are purple.

<![CDATA[What Possible Harm Could One Insane, Mutant Pair Of Sneakers Do?]]> If there's one thing guaranteed to please our ageing eyes more than a pair of Monkey Island-themed Chuck Taylors, it's a pair of Day of the Tentacle-themed Chuck Taylors.

They're once again the work of the talented Maya Plisetskaya, who once again has us wishing Lucasarts spent less time licensing shitty Star Wars games and more time licensing classic game memorabilia.

You can even buy them if you like, but the cheeky Miss Plisetskaya has them priced at €250, which works out to be a whopping 330 of your American dollars.

I might save my cash and wait for the Full Throttle pair.

<![CDATA[Mega Man Sneakers Are Mega Blue]]> More. Video game. Sneakers. Little different this time around, though, because they're not Nikes. Not covered in any obvious logos or colour schemes, either. Then again, they don't need to be.

You can tell long before you read Puma's desperate product description that these are Mega Man sneakers. That kind of electric blue isn't going to be dug up for Gears of War. And if you can't, read Puma's desperate product description, which goes a little something like this:

A fantastic material and color update inspired by Mega Man, a video game first released by Capcom in 1987. Whether you're familiar with the character or not, this synthetic leather material looks and feels like vinyl, giving the upper a shiny, retro-futuristic look. The addition of the perforated underlays, painted eyelets, & video game inspired pixelated emboss on the toe bumper complete this awesome look.

Almost entirely undone by the fact they're also offered in black, which isn't very Mega Man at all.

<![CDATA[EA Sports Gets Into The Sneaker Business]]> Game sneakers? Old news! But it's new news for EA Sports and the Skate series, with skate company Etnies unveiling a new sneaker designed to cash in on the impending launch of Skate 2.

They're called the RVM Skate 2, and should be out in the US later this month at Zumiez stores, with an international release to follow. Not the most eye-catching pair of shoes you'll ever see, but then, as a collabo between a sneaker company and a video game publisher, they could have been worse.

<![CDATA[OK, Nike Have Gone Nintendo MAD]]> What is this? A mass act of adoration on the part of Nike's design team? Or some strange, off-key marketing exercise on the part of Nintendo? It's difficult to tell, but what is clear is that Nike are loving their Nintendo at the moment. First it was NES-themed Air Max classics. Then a whole range of Wii-inspired kicks. Now it's another NES-inspired shoe, this time the Air Max Terra. It's got a similar theme to the Classics - the subtle d-pad around the sole, the colour scheme - but it's not quite as refined. Indeed, it looks more like a Mega Drive 2 tribute than a NES one.

<![CDATA[The Converse/Nintendo Partnership That Never Was]]> These are art, not shoes, because unlike the garish-yet-limited run of expensive designer sneakers we normally feature, these are hand-painted. Which means getting them wet or performing any kind of strenuous activity is just totally out of the question. As is wearing them to literally kick a man's ass after a heated bout of Smash Bros. Though hopefully there's one or two moral reasons stopping you from doing that before you have to actually consider "cracking the paint on my new custom Chucks" to be the one that keeps things civil.

<![CDATA[Ben Sherman's Pac-Man Shoes]]> One day I hope to be half the video game shoe connoisseur that Crecente is, but I'm quite a long way off. For example, when he saw these Pac-Man-inspired kicks from British clothing company Ben Sherman, I very much doubt there is a measure of time small enough to quantify the time between the initial page load and check out confirmation. I, on the other hand, waited for several minutes, hemming and hawing over $60 for a pair of canvas sneakers that I will probably never wear for fear of scuffing them, like the Asteroids Pro Keds I picked up last year. Oh well, I suppose there's only one thing for it. *closes eyes and places order* If you don't see yourself buying them it doesn't count.

<![CDATA[The Horror: Puma Tetris Shoes]]> I spend far too much of my reasonably-hard-earned money on two things. One of them is games. The other, sneakers. Combinations of the two should be a sure thing for me, then, but in this case, no, no it is not. Puma are re-releasing two versions of their old Disc Blaze sneaks in the Spring, only this time, with a Tetris theme. Not, as you'd be forgiven for thinking, an "opening credits of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air" theme.

<![CDATA[NBA Live 08, By Adidas]]> I normally think of three things when video game companies are hard pressed to flex their marketing muscles. First, we have breasts. They never fail to draw a crowd. Second, slapping some logos and character art on an automobile. Third, alternate reality game. When these three have been either vetoed as tasteless, stale or consuming of too much manpower, they default to their rare alt—shoes. Sneakerheads will cover the cost and at least one Kotaku editor will post about their existence, ensuring the program is a success.

To wit, the NBA Live 08 Gil II Zero, Gilbert Arenas' signature shoe in an EA Sports-appropriate colorway. That the cover star of this years hoops effort already has his own shoe design is simply serendipity. Looks like only one retailer is offering them, for around $130 US, so unless you consider these "straight fire", move along.

<![CDATA[Reebok Does Tron Kicks Right]]> Adidas may have beaten Reebok to the punch with their Tron-licensed kicks last year, but Reebok knocks it out of the goddamn park with their much more subtle, far less dorky Glow sneakers due to hit this summer. The New Dandyism column over at streetwear fashion blog High Snobiety has first pics of the glow-in-the-dark shoes in action. Shoes are so hot you'll want to keep a pocket flashlight handy for late night recharges.

New Dandyism also teases with a promise of an "apparel hook-up" alongside the Reebok release, which had better glow, too, or we'll be pissed.

<![CDATA[TGS06: J, Please Stop Blocking Our Phone Calls]]>

When Microsoft's eXtreme hipster J Allard said we were "kinda creepy," he had underestimated us. We are totally creepy. There are four of us staking out four different hotels in the greater Tokyo area, waiting for a glimpse of J's shiny noggin, searching for the scent of his pricey trainers. Mike, thought he had found Allard, only to have his heart broken. Repeatedly.

<![CDATA[Mizuguchi's Pimped-Out Kicks]]>

You're a big, powerful game designer with smash hits under your belt. What to do for funsies? Well, if you are Tetsuya Mizuguchi, you commission Nike to make one-of-a-kind sneakers with rainbows and rhinestones patterned after your PSP puzzler Lumines. But, if you're DoA's Tomonobu Itagaki, you drink. A lot.
