Super Mario Kart with online play would get me excited. Without it, it's a no buy for me. I'd rather to drag the SNES out from under my bed and just play that. A great game all the same. But online play would make it da BOB-OMB! (Sorry. I had to say it)
I can't believe Nintendo are still insistent on not including online functionality to their classic games.
I'll take mario kart as is thanks. Don't trust nintendo to go messing with this series, the games have gotten worse from the (alrightish) mario kart 64 to the mess of double dash
@oskarkeo: Surely the option of online play wouldn't hurt though... Would it?
Super Mario Kart is such an amazing game, that I think it's a bit of a crime that Nintendo won't at least consider throwing in some online functionality. Say what you will about Mario Kart Wii: but I felt the online was solid! Never a problem getting into matches, no lag and a pretty slick system by Nintendo's standards.
yeah, it would be nice but not worth messing with the balance of what's there. I'm just completely underwhelmed with every entry after the snes version. I've not played the wii one, but having purchased 64, double dash and borrowed the ds version, it's gonna take a back-to-basics reinvention to pique even a shred of interest from me.
Releasing it untouched on Wii could make it the only piece of nintendo software i'm tempted by.
Well I had assumed it was to ensure the software reached a high standard before release, but seeing as mario kart has been at Gold/Release status for about 17 years- and sufficiently quality checked by millions of gamers myself included, i'm gonna doubt the 3 years was required to port it.
Well, consider the original Smash Bros. bought. I started in the SSB franchise in the GC Melee version - I never got a chance to experience the original.
Old school Mario Kart might not be a bad buy either.
@Akihiko: Super Mario Kart is a day one buy for me. I played a ton of that game back in the day and glad its finally being released on the VC. Looking forward to playing the true Rainbow Road again. IMO you can't go wrong buying this game.
The only games I want from VC now is proper Turtles in Time & Castlevania Bloodlines.
I Got Zombies ate my neighbors and I never though I would see that game.
Its weird when I was a kid it was my birthday and my mom told me I could get one game I walked the aisles of Toys R' us and searched for a game the choice was between Street Fighter 2 and Mario Kart I couldn't decide my mom told me to hurry so in a rush I picked the mario kart ticket and ran to the front of the store. In retrospect that was a hard choice but as a kid all I had to go on was that Mario Kart had "Mario" in the title I got lucky and Mario Kart was an amazing game. Oddly the same sorta thing happened with Zombies ate my Neighbors.
can we transfer these VC games to DS for on the go gaming yet? No? Then it's no deal. I'll stick with Blood Omen, Soul Reaver and Final Fantasy VII on PSN/PsP/PS3
@GtheMVP99: Despite n64 games being the same for what sony charges for any high profile PS1 release on the playstation store [I believe some older titles which are much less intresting than say, FF7 sold for $6], which don't come with updated graphics or online play. Yeah, obviously the pricepoint doesn't work for re-releases, and no-one thinks this is the maximum profit point.
Microsoft had rare remake some stuff from the n64 era for download games, but they'd never have gotten away with releasing an N64 game in it's original form for banjo kazooie/tooie/perfect dark on the marketplace anyway, or else you can virtually guarentee that they would have.
@Lozmaster: Even PS1 games running on Ps3 can be upscaled. As I mentioned above, Ps1 games can be played either on PS3 or transferred to PSP for play on the go. If Nintendo offered the same options for transferring these games to DS, I wouldn't care about the pricetag. Being able to play Mario Kart or Contra 3 or any number of VC games on a portable is a far more enticing offer than being ripped off just to play it on Wii at those prices.
@GtheMVP99: N64 and SNES games are 10 and 8 dollars, respectively. 8 fucking dollars! I spend more than that on lunch regularly. It's criminal for Nintendo to charge less than the price of lunch for a game that has, at a minimum, dozens of hours of gameplay?
I don't know, I think the problem here is your sense of self-entitlement.
@GtheMVP99: The fact that these are console-perfect ports is the selling point. I don't want "new graphics" or "extra features". I want the game, presented as it was.
Also: Gamers complaining about paying $8 for Mario Kart. Wow.
@robotco: It was one of the best multiplayer games on the SNES. The game is, in fact, always in split screen, whether you are playing multiplayer or not.
SEE!
Nintendo care about the EU, and consider it a viable business opportunity, why can't Sony think the same way? They're both Japanese companies.
No offense America, but you do tend to get a little spoiled and treated like the "favorite kid" when it comes to videogames. America may be bigger, but Europe is no less important.
I find it funny how excited people get over certain VC releases (well, pretty much just Nintendo's VC releases). Considering that they're games most have already played.
Yet, any non-Nintendo VC release (even if it is a really good game) is often overlooked. And hell, people scoff at WiiWare, which are (mostly) NEW games.
I am not saying it's BAD, so to say... I've bought a few VC releases (even of games I physically own, like Bubble Bobble and River City Ransom), but it's nothing I wait over. Just, that... why do some people see this as such a big deal? Of course, I love classic games... but I guess I fail to see why things like Virtual Console is such a huge deal. Now, if you've never played the game, that's fine, you should experience the greatness of the past.
@N●Gage Croal: We get so excited over these games because they Are games we've played.. and loved!
Seldom can many of us find moments to match those of our first time through 'Bob-omb Battlefield', or the dramatic lightning torn sky of Legend of Zelda:Link to the Past, when we just knew something amazing was going to happen.
Not to mention the multiplayer of these games of old are much more memorable for many of us as well, since that's when we played together with friends all at one console and t.v., as opposed to today we're it's less personal and practically all online. I'm sure I'm not the only one that felt as hyper as possible, when 3 people chased me down as I had the golden gun, sidestepping frenetically as the dance of a madman, shooting around each corner, laughing like a madman.
And then we grew up and though we still love video games today, we can very seldom recreate the experience and pure joy produced by these moments which are our nostalgia.
@Tremolo-mayan:
I get nostalgia, believe me, I do. Got my NES at age 4 back in the 80s. I just rarely see myself rebuying games... at least, digital-only versions (i.e. despite owning the original NES copies of the Megaman games and the Genesis copies of the Sonic games, I've still bought the GameCube collections for them). And many of these games are timeless classics.
I just find it unnerving that a re-release of a classic game is more celebrated than the release of a new one.
@N●Gage Croal: I'm inlined to agree. It's why when my limited funds are diverted into Wii points, I try and spend it on stuff like Lost Winds or Bonsai Barber, or Bit Trip Beat, before original games becomes a lost cause on the console. A healthy mix of both is the way forward.
@N●Gage Croal: I love the Turbo Grafx 16, Commodore 64, Sega Master System games being released because I've never played or owned those systems or games.. and the Wiiware games add so much variety. I don't care for the 1st party Nintendo releases much, because I've already played and for the most part still own all the good ones. BUT Since you can gift the games that does make it easy to gift a game to a newcomer, so many good ones to choose from :)
Plunkett! You're mad! I beat SNES Jurassic Park only once, in my entire life... and do you know what happened after that? The 1994 Northridge earthquake! To this day, I still fear what havoc I may wreak if I try to beat that game again.
@plankton88: haha L-O-L, Nintendo couldn't even pull off a half decent online mode for SSBBrawl and you want online on a re-release of an N64 game on Wii?
When pigs fly, dude, when pigs FLY!

There are alot of games that are said to be great, but unfortunately, they don't always hold up by todays standards.
Mario Kart on the other hand, is a true game that deserves the title of being 'great'.
Anyone that has a Wii, and not the original version of the game on the SNES owes it to themselves to buy this.
What a game.
11/21/09
Smash Bros should be released with updated graphics, and or online play, same for Mario Kart.
It's almost criminal what Nintendo is charging, and saddening that people will actually pay them.
11/21/09
It is an excellent game that still holds up today. A true classic.
If I didn't still have my SNES version, I wouldn't think twice about buying it.

Do you even factor prices outside of your bubble? Prices for these products aren't the same across the planet you silly ignorant thing.
