@Ezhno: Well since Sony loses money on each one sold and the attach rate isn't up to the level Sony really could use to become profitable, then every PS3 sold is also a dagger in Sony's heart.
@Darkest Daze: in japan, and most other places, people actually by these devices called "games" and each game costs roughly $60, that easily pays off the $50 debt for each ps3 and they make at least $10 off each console sold, depending on how many games are bought. so yeah, theyre still stabbing at MS.
The 1-to-3 360 to PS3 sales seem to be the trend for now. There was a time early last year when it was 1-to-5. It even beat PS3 a couple of months last year. The 360 is far from a success story in Japan but I wonder if MS is where they were hoping to be at this point in the 360's life cycle?
@CatboyMac's angry girlfriend: "Dont call it a comeback, i've been here for years, rockin' my peers, and puttin' suckers in fear. Making the tears rain down lick a monsoon! Listen to the base go BOOM! Explosion!
2 mane grphs, it r mak3 mah brin hart. WTF PSP r l0sing!!!! Whats with all these graphs, I pretty sure most people don't care about sales of something in another country. Why do people care about another countries' graphs so much?
@kwkwyjib0: Most games, from the NES to the PS2, came from Japan. If a system fails in Japan, it is pretty much doomed to fail everywhere else as well.
At least, that used to be the case. This generation seems to see most games being made in America and Europe.
Regardless, I'm still interested in Japan's situation. I was planning on getting a PSP and was almost talked out of it because I was told it is pretty much dead in America by a friend of mine who happens to be a Gamestop manager. However, if it is still more than alive in Japan, I have no problem importing games.
@the7k: if fails in japan? actually, not; If you release a pretty shounen Rpg-only console, it will sell loads in japan and still be a semi failure all over the world, unles it earns some fanboyism from Final fantasys
@DLNO-001: You must have missed the part where I said "That used to be the case."
Take a look at Sega. A huge success in America and Europe, but the Japanese didn't care for it until late Saturn, and by that time, the damage was done.
What system has been a smashing success in America/Europe that wasn't a smashing success in Japan before this generation and after the NES?
You can't tell by the way the graph looks but the 360 has been steadily selling between 1/2 to 1/3 of what the PS3 is selling since it's lost the lead but if it can maintain that gap then they may still get a descent foothold in Japan.
@ImSoFresh: you mean smaller right? if they gain grounds with star ocean, they gap will start to close. btw, i'll laugh my ass off at SO's company if it doesnt sell well in japan.
@excel_excel: Isn't the DSi like equivalent to 260$ or something. For a sleaker design, sd card support and vid cam among others, I think if it came out today in the states, I'd still get an old school DS . I'm oldschool in that I like my video game machines to play video games and my personal camcordering devices to personally camcorder.
I think I'm on drugs tonight, but the sentiment is there, yes?
@excel_excel: "The system was first released in Japan on November 1, 2008 for ¥18,900 (tax included; ¥18,000 before tax), around US$192, in matte black and matte white" from wikipedia.
They took out the GBA expansion port though, so no guitar hero or rumble paks or old GBA games. Kinda lame.
@excel_excel: thats more than a fucking wii!! nintendo doesnt deserve to sell things anymore, they could make an HD console and sell them at $5 a peice if they wanted to!
@goboard117: It must be the massive onslaught of commercials tailored to families. Every XBOX 360 commercial i have seen of late has revolved around how it is packaged with Lego Indiana Jones and Kung Fu Panda and how it has 10123091283902183 family friendly games. Appeal to casual gamers/families = $$$$$$$

I think a bigger impact on sales would be a price to the level of the other two consoles.
