Animal Crossing Wii Begins Its Dominance In Japan
If the debut of Animal Crossing: City Folk is any indication, Nintendo has another hit on its hands. City Folk landed at #1, with Wild World For the DS still in the top 30.
City Folk for the Wii was just one of five new debuts claiming half of the top ten, beating out Square Enix's Chrono Trigger DS and The Last Remnant. Another strong Xbox 360 Japanese-style role-playing game that should help Microsoft's fortunes overseas. Former chart-topper Kirby will likely move over 500,000 copies of Hoshi no Kirby: Ultra Super Deluxe by the end of the year.
A handful of PlayStation 3 titles show stronger sales legs than their counterparts, potentially a good sign for Sony in Japan. Media Create sales for November 17 to 24 are after the jump. More »

Kirby Continues To Suck Yen In Japan Ultra Super Deluxe Style
Last week's Media Create chart topper, Hoshi no Kirby: Ultra Super Deluxe, holds on to the top spot amid plenty of new competition. Way of the Samurai 3 and Resistance 2 both debuted strong, kicking former top ten PlayStation 3 titles LittleBigPlanet and Grand Theft Auto IV out of the top ten.
The PS3 has another new game appearing on the chart, as FIFA 09 sells enough to land at #18. Pokémon Platinum creeps ever closer to the 2 million mark and DS Nishimura Kyotaro Suspense 2 Shin Tantei Series: Kanezawa kankan gokkan no kyoukoku fukushuu no kage brings extra long titles from Tecmo back to the forefront.
The rest of Japan's best sellers for the week of Nov. 10 to 16 are after the break.

Kirby Chews Up, Spits Out Niko Bellic In Japan
The Japanese release of Kirby Superstar Ultra, which hit stateside in September, lands with a resounding pink boom, selling over a quarter million copies. It kicks last week's champ Grand Theft Auto IV from the top of the charts. Hoshi no Kirby: Ultra Super Deluxe joins five other Nintendo DS games in the top ten, the only new debut to chart above the jump.
Recently launched PlayStation 3 titles GTA IV, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III and LittleBigPlanet do good enough business to stay in the top ten, a feat we don't expect to see repeated next week. New releases like Samurai Dou 3, Family Ski: World Ski & Snowboard and Fushigi no Dungeon: Fuurai no Shiren DS 2 - Sabaku no Majou will probably take up valuable chart real estate.
The rest of Japan's best sellers for the week of Nov. 3 to 9 are after the break.

Grand Theft Auto IV #1 With A Bullet In Japan
The Bellics hijacked the top spot on Media Create's Japanese software sales chart for the week of October 27 to November 2, with Grand Theft Auto IV moving some 168,000 copies. The gross majority of those were of the PlayStation 3 variety, with the Xbox 360 SKU doing about a quarter of the business.
The debut of LittleBigPlanet in Japan was less spectacular, nabbing the third place spot. Perhaps consumers opted to pick up those new 80GB PS3 bundles, with either LBP or Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III included.
With seven new releases snatching top ten spots, best sellers like Wii Fit and Wii Music get bumped from the top ten. Will the latter recover?
01. Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3) - 133,000 / NEW

Japanese Gamers Choose Girly Fashion Over Wii Music
Last week's Japanese software chart champ Wii Music might not have the legs of Nintendo's other first party Wii efforts if its second week performance is any indication. The music game dropped to fifth place amid new competition from Nintendo's own Wagamama Fashion: Girls Mode and Atlus' Devil Summoner: Kuzunoha Raidou tai Abaddon Ou. The latter would've topped the charts, if both the limited edition and regular edition were counted as one release by Media Create, for the record.
Not much else in the way of exciting software sales battles, but, hey, NBA Live 09 charted. So... there's that.

Wii Music Hits High Note On Japanese Sales Charts
Wii Music, as you may already know, topped Japanese sales charts in its debut week. While the Media Create numbers skew a bit lower than what Famitsu had to say, Wii Music won the sales chart crown handily, pushing Pokémon Platinum back to the number two spot.
It will be interesting to see what kind of legs Wii Music has, considering how well Nintendo fare like Mario Kart DS and Wii Play continues to sell.
01. Wii Music (Wii) - 92,000 / NEW
02. Pokémon Platinum (DS) - 72,000 / 1,754,000

Japan Still Loves Giant Mechs, PSPs
With little in the way of new releases from October 5th to the 12th in Japan, Macross Ace Frontier made securing the first place spot on the Media Create sales charts look easy. It might have something to do with the game being rather good and the continued popularity of the PSP.
Other notable titles are notable for their absence; Disaster: Day of Crisis for Wii and Cross Edge for PS3 drop off the top thirty, making for a rather poor performance for both titles in Japan. Fortunately for Mario Kart Wii, that cleared some space, giving it a new showing in the top ten. People love wheels!

Pokémon Returns To Power On Japanese Software Charts
Pokémon Platinum is back. It beat out one of Japan's other favorite series, yet another Dynasty Warriors for the PlayStation 2, to return to the number one spot after a week off. There's little else in the way of exciting new debuts, but we unfortunately see Disaster: Day of Crisis slip further down the charts. Poor Monolith Soft... they worked so hard!
Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. finds its way back onto the top 30, continuing a bazillion week streak of eyebrow raising sales.

'Disaster: Day Of Crisis' Debuts Appropriately In Japan
It wasn't the best first week for Nintendo and Monolith Soft's Disaster: Day of Crisis in its native land. The Wii survival adventure landed at the number ten spot, trounce by new Super Robot Taisen and Kinnikuman entries on the PlayStation 2. Also beating out Disaster were new PS3 titles Aquanaut's Holiday and Cross Edge, the multi-publisher fan service-filled RPG that pits Prinnies against Darkstalkers' most be-fanged characters. Or something!
The good news for Nintendo is that Wii titles don't always have their best showing in the first week. Disaster may reverse its fortunes on next week's Media Create sales chart. Or maybe the week after that. We'll see.

'Pokémon Platinum' Transforms Into 1.2 Million Copies
Pokémon Platinum has gone well past platinum now, with another 300K being snapped up by Nintendo DS owners in Japan according to this week's Media Create sales chart. The top spots are dominated by DS software, with new debut Dragon Ball DS settling for second place.
The PlayStation 3 version of Eternal Sonata enters the charts with just 34,000 copies sold. Not bad for a year-old Xbox 360 port, but not quite as good as the game's original debut. Hey, hardware bundles help!
