Yes, your reservations are well warranted about the game, but if all the tender loving care spent lighting and texturing those zombie nurse racks is exhibited in other, possibly more important aspects of Silent Hill: Homecoming, Double Helix might just be able to pull it off. If not, we'll be giving away pitchforks and easy-light torches for our proposed "Silent Hill V Went Horribly Wrong And Someone Must Pay" contest in September. Watch for it!

<![CDATA[ Silent Hill: Homecoming Delivers Death Stomp To Harker ]]> When we learned that The Collective—now Double Helix—had been tasked with Silent Hill V development at E3 last year, we wondered "What about Harker, that original vampire kicking game they're working on?" Since we've heard just shy of nothing on Harker for nearly a year and Silent Hill V was just recently rechristened Silent Hill: Homecoming, a report from GameSpot that the team has essentially killed the game doesn't surprise.

"Killed" is more politically correctly described as being put on "permanent hiatus", but it's rare for these projects to be resurrected. As long as they don't muck up the next Silent Hill, we'll forgive this cancellation of a game that we weren't particularly interested in anyway.

<![CDATA[ New Silent Hill V Screens Suitably Foggy ]]> Silent Hill is alive and well in the hands of California developer The Collective, who prove with these screenshots that they have suitably captured the city's trademark fog. The highest praise I can give these screens, which come in both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 flavors without any noticeable difference, is that they certainly look like Silent Hill screenshots, with spooky interiors and just the right amount of gore as to not be pretentious. Can you be pretentious about gore? If I were a goresmith I'm sure I could find a way.

<![CDATA[ Raccoon City Times Interview With Silent Hill V Writer ]]> SH5logo.jpg The Raccoon City Times has a short but interesting interview up with Silent Hill V co-writer Patrick J. Doody. He covers some interesting subjects in the page long interview like the differences between writing for games as opposed to film, the difficulties of navigating the Silent Hill lore and how this game will be the scariest of the lot.

Overall, the game's scares will be the biggest we've had, and that's not just jump scares - the eerie feeling of dread will be heightened because the designers can really immerse you emotionally through amazing environments and wild-looking demons. However, story wise, Silent Hill hasn't typically been "scary," as it's more about the depths of madness and terror it takes the player. Clearly I can't talk about the story of the game, but I can say that we have worked very hard on making it the most disturbing drama of the entire series. My hope is that players will be affected by the game's end.

While Doody doesn't give too much away about the plot of the game, his explanation of the writing experience is extremely interesting. Nice bit of weekend reading for Silent Hill fans.

<![CDATA[ Silent Hill V First Screens, Developer Named ]]> Following Konami's E3 2007 press conference, in which the above Silent Hill V teaser (with the emphasis on tease) was shown, I followed up with Konami executives about the game's development. Silent Hill V won't be developed at Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo, it will—like Silent Hill Origins on PSP—come from a Western developer.

The Collective, responsible for games such as Marc Ecko's Getting Up and Buffy The Vampire Slayer, will be at the helm of the classic horror franchise's fifth outing. The Collective currently lists Harker as its only project, but may have put that project on hold to focus on development of Konami's Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 sequel.

<![CDATA[ Konami E3 2007 Non-Liveblogging ]]> The Konami E3 2007 press conference is kicking off, with Konami's Mark Franklin and VP of marketing, Anthony Kraus, going through many of its previously announced titles, including Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party for Wii, Contra IV for the Nintendo DS, Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles for PSP and much more. We've been promised news and "new announcements" so make the jump for the semi-non-liveblogging.

The first game is Silent Hill V, featuring little more than a teaser trailer with logo. William Martell takes the podium to announce the game is coming to next-generation platforms. That's the Xbox 360 and PS3. You're Alex Shephard a man returning from an overseas tour of duty. His family is in disarray, only his younger brother Joshua provides him with happiness. Joshua just happens to have gone missing. He'll obviously look for him in the eerie town of Silent Hill.

Alex will "need to make full use of his military training." Akira Yamaoka is returning to compose the game's soundtrack.

Kojima takes the stage, kicking off his speech in full English. Kojima talks about the downgraded E3, calling it an important festival. He talks about the MGS series and its relationship with E3. He says he wanted to make a bigger bang for MGS4, but will have to settle with the current version. He says he hopes the "old E3" will return next year.

The Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer rolls.

Getting a second chance to view the non-playable trailer, it shows how crisp this preview is. Sure, the Fox Hound soldiers look like plastic action figures, but it's still a sight to behold. Meryl must have a lot of product in her hair, though. It's like a helmet.

I missed the mysterious sunglass wearing soldier in the first viewing of the trailer. Who could that be? Anyway, the game is coming in "Early 2008."

And that's it. Silent Hill V and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Off to pick up some assets.
