Can someone explain the relationship between the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series to me? I've heard good things about these games, but I've never played them because I had no idea where to start. Does the story line continue from one game to the next? What order should I play them in?
@kylenalepa: The SMT series and the Persona series are entirely separate. Persona is just a spin off of the main games, set in a different time period with different themes. For that matter, most of the games in both series are mostly standalone, so you can pick it up anywhere in the timeline and understand things just fine.
@kylenalepa: Best way I can think of to describe it is to compare it to Pokemon. Shin Megami Tensei is the brand name. Games like Nocturne, Devil Summoner and Devil Survival all have the same type of demons and theme, but they may not have the same gameplay, like how Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Ranch all have the same theme and creatures but different gameplay. Also, even though the gameplay is different, knowing the creatures and how the games are will help in different games. For example, learning that Charizard is a fire pokemon helps you find him in Pokemon Snap, even though they are comepletely different games. Same thing: Knowing that Pixie is a healer that also uses Zio skills will help you in Persona as well as Devil Survivor, even though they are different games, if any of this makes sense?
As for storyline, one spin-off doesn't have anything to do with another spinoff besides the themes and demons Depending on the spinoff they may or may not be directly related. Digital Devil Saga 1 is required to play DDS 2 because it is an ongoing story. However with Persona, the games exist in the same universe, Persona 4 takes place 2(?) years after Persona 3 takes place. But besides little cameos here and there, there isn't any connection and you can safely jump into any Persona game as each story is self-contained.
I think I explained this a little more than I should have 0.o
@kylenalepa: I would, but HardcoreGaming101 does a better job: [www.hardcoregaming101.net] -- it's a big read (you can skip to the parts if you want though) but very insightful and well researched. Plus, it's updated up to P4.
@kylenalepa: As far as I can tell, typically the only connection is the cast of demons you fight and fight with. Occasionally there's crossovers or cameos, nods of the head and whatnot, buuut. Mostly it's the demons and similarities in style and theme (to the best of my knowledge).
@Sir-Lucius has no pictchar!: I can't wait either, and as for your bus ride, unless its a ride around the world you will prolly be set for a few bus rides with those two games (or if you try to 100% disgaea 2... a few trips around the world)
@zulux21: Heh, it's only a 5 hour trip, so I figure that's around 2.5 hours a piece. Although I'll probably play Persona nonstop once I get off work at 4 tomorrow.
@Sir-Lucius has no pictchar!: I am over 90 hours into the first Disgaea and I haven't even finished it yet. Let's not even talk about Disgaea 2, which I'm 20 minutes into. I just love the item world too damn much. O_o
@gold163 (° д° ): God I think I have around 200 or 300 on the first one on PSP. I can't remember off the top of my head. I'm already 5 hours into the second one and I started playing yesterday. It's terrifying how quickly I get sucked into Disgaea. I could barely keep my eyes open last night, but I was only 3 levels away from the 10th floor in the Item World (and hence a chance to save) and couldn't break myself away. The game is like crack.
I think the real negative feedback is going to come from people that think all of the Persona games are like 3 and 4 because that's what they've played. 1 and 2 are VERY different.
@Hey_Blinkon: It's an atlus release. Unless they thought it would get a really wide audience (P4) you'll see maybe a couple hundred thousand copies sent to N/A and those copies will slowly accrue in price rather than get cheaper. I guess thats their scam or maybe it's simply because they are such a small niche publisher.
@kingmanic: Since they made Amazon their official store that no longer seems to be the case. Not that I expect there to be a big sale but you can get Nocturne and DD and DD2 for $30 new now through Amazon.
@Hey_Blinkon: Don't be surprised if you suddenly can't find it before you ever see a price drop -- it wouldn't be an unusual occurrence for an Atlus game. Just warning you.
@endaround: Really? Check around -- the cheapest you can get Devil Summoner 1 new for is like $73 -- with an Atlus game, you just never know. There may be a ton available ... or none.
@jayntampa: Just wait a while. They've been reprinting in small batches for Amazon. Now since DS1 wasn't exactly a resounding hit it may take some time but Nocturne is $70 when new prints aren't out there but its $30 right now at Amazon.
@Koztah: Working Designs did fun localizations, but they varied greatly from the source. Persona was a weird aberration during a period that they were really just learning how to release stuff in the US. In general, they do excellent translations.
Surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but we have YET another worthy title on the horizon for the PS2. Maybe they'll keep doing this every 8 months until 2012. How long can Atlus continue to breathe life into this, the Clint Eastwood of consoles?
Wow, they really made a sequel? I was under the impression the last one was one of Atlus's more poorly selling titles. On a semi-related note where the hell is the sequel to SMT: Nocturne?
@Rebochan: P4 already feels longer than P3 (even though I know it's still just a year in game time, it seems more stuffed). If P5 gets even longer, I may have to raise a child whose sole purpose in life is to play it from beginning to end.

At any rate, P4 just came out and we've got this new DS2 coming, so i'd bet you won't see another SMT title for at least 6 months, maybe a year.
