I don't understand why everyone gets so personally offended at any suggestion that kids should do other things besides playing video games. They're picked on because they are extremely popular. When I was younger, everyone was always saying that parents need to get their kids away from the TV, now video games have a bigger pull for most kids, so that becomes the main challenge for parents.

If kids got to do what they wanted, they would play video games and eat cookies all the time. So parents have to moderate it. That doesn't mean that playing video games is bad. They're ubiquitous enough now, we can stop acting like oppressed victims.

Everyone gets up in arms when conservatives rip on video games, but as soon as Obama does.

"Well, you can't blame him!"

Quit trying to rationalize what the man says and take responsibility for your own actions. Everyone knows you need balance in life, video games AND exercise. Exercising too much takes a toll on your social life, just like too many video games.

Quit defending the idiotic things Obama and his speechwriters are saying and just prove him wrong.

@Nick Mangiaracina: Look deeper my friend. If you'd take the time to look at this objectively you'd see what we're talking about. And while people may obviously know you need balance, people just as obviously don't follow it. So, I'm sorry while you may see it as unnecessary but as a father and a gamer what Obama said in his speech is true. We need to spend more time with our kids than we normally do and that means turning off video games sometimes.

I'm truly sorry if you're unable to read more in to it than your own bias will let you, because it'd be nice to have a worthwhile conversation on these forums about the subject that go beyond one's party lines and in to something of real meaning.

Good luck with that.

@Theoutlet: His point stands. Conservatives said the SAME THING during the bush years yet people are ok now with obama saying it. I also am sort of disgusted with the whole double standard on bushisms. If I spoke like obama does away from prompters and speechwriters I would be considered an idiot.

I think Obama isn't anti videogames though, he is just pro keeping his approval ratings high so he will tell people anything they wanna hear. Doesn't he have an absurdly high approval rating(60-70%), but only 30-40% think things are going well?

@trunkenmath: Do you have any evidence of this? The only time I remember politicians shitting on video games were democrats and I hated them doing it too, but I hated them for the context of what they said. I did not take what they said out of context to better my agenda, which is what he's doing.

Games are as slothful as TV or any other medium, they're just telling parents not to let their children play games all day. Which is something we should all do, something OTHER than play games all day, since the country he's standing for has a HUGE obesity rate, and games are a part of the issue.

...he's addressing the issue, ladies and gentlemen. Like when Cookie Monster said that cookies are a "sometimes food", games are a "sometimes hobby". You can't just friggin' play them all the time or it'll be unhealthy.

He's saying it like it is, and it's one of the things I support him in. He's not saying games are the bad guy, but that people spend too much time playing them, among other things. And you can't say that's not true.

@Ashurahori: Hurray for critical thinking beyond purely black and white terms. It always upset me when people took Obama's quotes abut video games and tried to twist them to their agenda. Such activities are an act to try and make the world out to be laughably simplistic and it's a tribute to the somewhat shallow thinking of the common man. Only looking in to something as much as one wants to see rather than seeing what's really there.

@Theoutlet: Obama is easily avoided on TV or Internet. You can just ignore the channels or sites where he is popular to appear. In the games you never know when his face will be on your screen.

@Extric: It was a couple billboards that you'd pass when going 100+ miles an hour. Somehow I don't think it'd be that much of a bother.

As for avoiding Obama, I didn't like McCain but I didn't stay away from all information/news because I didn't want to hear about him. I also, wouldn't let him affect what games I played. I think you'd be pissing him off more by being subject to his advertising and still not voting for him.
