I wish there was a 4th choice: "Shoot her in head while she sleeps, then twice in chest, then in head again, then shoot yourself while lying against her body"
Hey, what if your a Psycho-pathetic alien football star killer??? (read news about McNair...)
I will just add that I found the inclusion of the scene in ME to be tasteful and appropriate - it definitely added to the game, and I am hoping for such an emotional attachment to the story and characters in ME2. I will be pre-ordering.
People who call Ashley a racist or a xenophobe are ignoring the larger context within the game. Humanity is but a child exploring the vast confines of the Galaxy while trying to form relations with completely foreign races that have proven to be hostile in the past.
Dammit, that's frightening.
There's an understandable amount of anxiety felt by a character like Ashley. Her own personal family history gives her a lot of reason to feel bitter and wary of alien races. Your character can help her adjust to working with aliens. If she was truly some kind of xenophobe, she'd have nothing to do with the Normandy.
@LaneWinree: I think it's brilliant that a character in a game can invoke levels of hatred like that though. Shows how far we've come. And the fact that you're showing a more reasonable side to her racism just makes it all the more fascinating.
"Humanity is but a child exploring the vast confines of the Galaxy while trying to form relations with completely foreign races that have proven to be hostile in the past."
Well said and absolutely correct, Ashley's character feels anxiety over current events, and it manifests itself as fearful xenophobia. It wasn't clear from my post but I feel this adds to the story. I can dislike a character but appreciate what it means to the larger context to have her feel that way. Is she as bad as the Earth-firster's you meet on the Citadel, no, but certainly she feels more disdain than Navigator Presley for them. These three examples show varying levels of xenophobia for the other races, which is really a shades of grey argument not an absolute. The larger context of humanities role here is also fleshed out with the ambassadors lust for power, and Captain Andersen's tempered idealism. Not to mention the countless NPC's that show the best and worst of humanity.
I don't think we necessarily disagree, at least, I appreciate what your saying about the larger context.
Emotional stimulus is extremely important to immersing a player in a game. Sexual situations are no exception. Mr. Zeschuk's reasoning is sound. If this element serves the story, perhaps more of this emotional stimulus should be included in mature rated games.
@Cheater87: But it's A-OK to throw grenades and shoot people - basically video games are a mirror of societal rules. It is unacceptable to be shooting and blowing people up in real life, but banging is legit. HOWEVER VIRTUAL SEX IS IMMORAL AND WRONG!
@Cheater87: Last I checked Sex was not banned from games in the US - it's just if not done right (like ME did - tasteful and minimal) the game ends up with the dreaded Adults Only (AO) rating of death.
I really didn't see much of a point to the sex scene in Mass Effect...none of the characters who were eligible for the scene were that likeable to begin with, and I really ended up only doing it for the achievement that came out of it.
Seriously, the best way to make a sex scene foster an emotional connection is to actually write characters who aren't A) Ugly as a pug that was beaten with a sack of hammers and B) Racists, creepy monosexual thought-raping aliens, or Carth Onasi.
@Pepe Tinn: Kaidan is voiced by the same actor who played Carth in the KotOR games, and is actually a relatively similar character TO Carth, minus the whole "whiny asshole" part that dominated his personality for the early parts of KotOR 1.
@Leftnt_Sharpe: Eh, he got better near the end, especially after you beat the shit out of his idiot son. He seems to be fully cured of his terminal bitch-itis in KotOR 2, even if he only minorly appears in that one.
In any case, yeah. Kaidan was kinda weird because of how Carth-y he was. And the female characters were just as bad.
@Archaotic: So caught up with the aesthetics that you miss the point, the people don't have to be beautiful to ellicit a connection, it's the emotion itself that is beautiful. Are we all so devoid of poetry, of imagination, that we can't see beneath the skin of a fictional character to the emotional attachment beneath?
@Archaotic: there wasn't a point if you didn't care about mass effect to begin with. mass effect is probably one of the only games where sex was fitting since the characters could actually emote. plus liara wasn't bad looking even through the 3rd time - she's the bonkable mission vao. a lot more bonkable than ANY cokie-cutter androgynous jrpg character, which is all of them.
want to see pointless sex? god of war. it wasn't even sex at that point, it was more of a fart joke.
@ThursdayNext: When they're a creepy thought-raping alien or a hyper-religious racist? There IS no emotional attachment. I'd drop those two out an airlock as soon as I could if the game gave me the option. Tali was the only female character in the game I didn't instantly find incredibly annoying.
@ithyphallus of his own will recommends Kotaco! [twitter.com]: Clearly we're not playing the same games here. I guess I'm not much of a sci-fi nerd though, as having sex with an alien that is not only not human, but not actually female is just very, very creepy to me. So not only was she ugly and inhuman, but she was annoying as hell.
Here's the trick. Western RPGs can have good characters, and so can Japanese RPGs. Mass Effect just didn't. At least, not the ones that you had the option (or would ever want to) have sex with. Wrex is the man.
@Massiah: I don't think the developers treat it as a big deal, I think we, as a culture and as an audience do. Like Zeschuck said, its just the natural progression of the story. Fox news on the other hand: "DEMON GAME MAKERS TRIES TO HARVEST YOUR CHILD'S VIRGINITY tonight at 8"
No it isn't a "crazy taboo", I mean really? Are you that ignorant?? With the ready availability and mainstream popularity of pornography, in a time where "sex before marriage" is considered a primitive custom, and in this society where casual sexual unions are commonplace, sex is not a "taboo". Retard.
@Lunchbox: Either the reply went to the wrong thread, or you meant "NO IT ISN'T A CRAZY TABOO!! ARE YOU FUCKING IGNORANT?? YOU AMATEUR!! YOU'RE WRECKING MY PORN!!"

That's because it is a big deal. If you, or the person you're with at the time thinks it isn't, you're doing it wrong.

But then again, that's our culture. We treat sex as a crazy taboo, and thus it becomes more risque.
It is worth a chuckle when they overplay the ecstasy.
