Sumo Digital can remove every character from the game except Shadow the Hedgehog and Amy Rose and I wouldn't give three shits about four shits. Richard Jacques is on soundtrack duty, and that's all I need to know about this game to know that it will at least have some measure of awesome to it.
I loved Toe Jam and Earl. All three games actually. So I'd love to see them return, even if it was in a party game/kart racer or whatever. But that is just me...
Why exactly is this game so widely loved? I downloaded it for VC last week and me and a friend tried to play it but... wow, what a horrible, horrible game. Yes, it deserves two horribles.
Slooooowwwww, plodding gameplay made worse by backtracking every time you accidentally walk off the stage. Which you can't avoid since you have no way of knowing what the presents do the first time you use them.
So is TJ&E nostalgia inflated, or did I miss the point?
@naikou: Missed it by a mile, it would seem. Perhaps several.
I suppose by the hand-holding standards of today's time, the game would be considered pretty bad. Of course, in this case, one must realize that this is one of those (few) games where the gameplay doesn't take center stage: the game's personality does.
@naikou: Yep, you're missing the point seeing as you're complaining about the gameplay itself. Not knowing what the presents do is a big dynamic in any rogue game, and the thrill comes from being able to survive through all 25 levels. You have to hunt for presents, keep the good stuff, and pray you don't hit a randomizer. It's a great feeling to be on the verge of getting run over by the ice cream truck and opening up an unknown item and getting rewarded with some surprise that'll let you escape.
The humorous enemies and characters are a big bonus as is the split screen gameplay. I'm pretty surprised you played with another person and didn't enjoy being able to high five each other for life, sharing presents on the same screen, and bailing each other out. I'm betting you just didn't give the game a chance since you seemed so annoyed to not know what the presents are when you got them. Maybe you did give it a chance and still dislike the game, but it's far from "horrible, horrible."
The only failing of the game is how redundant the earth worlds are, something the later games in the series addressed. I'd love to see it on XBLA/PSN, but I'm sick and tired of getting pathetic emulated ROMs and would hope we get the full HD remake treatment Bionic Commando and others have received.
Another fumble by SEGA! WHEN DOES IT END SEGA! Toe Jam and Earl in any sega game is a no-brainer(they wouldve saved Sega Superstars Tennis, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics and the Condemed 2 multiplayer).
All that aside... isnt it neccesary to include Earthworm Jim on his rocket engine in a kart racer? Im predicting sega will also forget/ mishandle/ botch/ be just to damn lazy to do this.
Sega should think of their own property as Nintendo did with Smash Bros... just because that's old and unknown to kids nowadays, it's not something that's unworthy to spend some development costs on it. If you make a pretty game with those characters on it, even if the person don't know who it is, it can become famous once again. (Kid f*king Icarus... Fire Emblem characters got famous on the west after SSBM?).
Of course, in this case we're talking about character rights, but I don't see Sega paying much respect to their own games... from Alex Kidd to Altered Beast. Ressurectiong old franchises is a trend nowadays, with Monkey Island and so on. Some crappy stuff like the Lode Runner for XBLA, but...
Whatever, just pay Greg Johnson... he probably won't ask for a huge amount, since he won't get to release anything with them anyways (not that I know of.)
@Man in the mirror: Nevermind the fact that TJ&E were shamefully looked over for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Ultimate, my Aunt Fanny. Penultimate, I say. Penultimate!

I wasn't a fan of the game. (It was rather doo-doo). But loved the whackiness of the characters.

TJ&E was the first game that I played which really engaged me in co-op play, something I rarely like even today.

If they know they have a lot of fans, they should add it in.
