Ugh, that's possibly the worst form of DRM in my mind. I never understood why Secu-rom was thought to be so terrible. I agree that it's only harmful to legit consumers, but I think its effects are dramatized.
This, however, is just annoying. It really bugs me when I have to put my games in... it's just something I've gotten used to not doing, and I hate having cases clutter up my desk.
Anyways, I'm sure this will be on Steam, so it's really not a problem. STEAM FTW!
And what exactly is EA's company line in regard to this. Has the state of PC game piracy drastically changed? Or did they realize that limited online authentication did nothing to curb it while driving legitimate customers away?
Once, just once, I'd really like to see a company own up to their stupidity.
@Shin-san: It's up to EA. They're doing the same with the Sims 3 which like it or not is a massive franchise for them. They've learned their lesson now it seems.
One of these days I may get around to buying Spore, but it's just so much work to have to buy it and then get a cracked version to avoid ever allowing SecuROM onto my PC (the box will remain sealed forever). Good on EA for allowing this.
Whelp, that's the final nail. The PCGA is officially either 100% out of touch with PC gamers, or just doesn't care. Honestly, after all of the internet explodes after each release of a major game with an overly-restrictive security policy and the leaving of Activision, a massive publisher, who's even left? Is the PCGA going to turn into a security club? Where securom, starforce and all the rest sit in a circle and sing songs about all the great things they're doing in the world, getting paid thousands per day for it.
Oh, but the PC Gaming Alliance are the only ones who are!
You are traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a horrific land of nightmares and unspeakable atrocities.
@Roufuss: Agreed. It's a group of fundamentalist PC fanboys that want "their" platform to beat the console market. This will never happen as long as different PCs have different hardware.
However this could change if OnLive proves itself. Then devs will not have to worry too much about various rig configurations. Nobody has to lose their mouse and keyboard.
@MrKlorox: Yeah, sign me up for OnLive. I'd love to run games 720p on my monitor. It's hard to beat shitty resolutions.
@Poul Wrist: Ignore the idiots in this thread. And all the others. They'd much rather just type, "FAIL! lol!" over and over than actually bother to reasonably think about what this means.
The PCGA is about, say it with me, finding solutions to various issues of PC gaming. Did the thought ever occur to any of you that maybe, just maybe, having SecuROM, the biggest copy-protection scheme for PC games, is a good thing? So, you know, people can actually work with the biggest copy-protection scheme company to make it better and less obtrusive for PC games? But don't let reasoning cloud your knee-jerk "FAIL! Durr hurr!" postings.
Personally, I hope the PCGA can actually work with Sony DADC to figure out ways to more adequately enact DRM schemes that are reasonable to the consumer and non-intrusive instead of having Sony DADC trying to convince people of that their way is the best way. We'll just have to wait and let time tell.
@stupid_mcgee: would prefer an astronaut: No, SecuROM is basically stupid and obsolete at this point. People have already come up with more sensical ways of selling games and battling piracy.
Now they may think they are the Company of Heroes of PC Gaming. They may even state to be the only ones that truly know of the Crysis at hand! They may believe that what they work for is a Just Cause; but we gamers know better.
We know of the dire machinations behind the gathering; the eerie mystical gathering of the "wise" ones only known by the code name of "CEO" wish not to bring a peaceful gathering, but to raise a Red Alert!
The sinister Ideas shall have a Mass Effect on the face of PC gaming...
Their Far Cry shall be heard throughout the PC gaming world...
They Command to Conquer....
They are on the brink of the Dawn of War...
Yet we Gamers will not be taken so easily. We will not be Left for Dead...
We will not fall to the Mercanaries...
We will open the Portal to punish the Sins of this wretched Empire.
So I guess I'm still out of luck, since it's my computer's habit to periodically eject my hard drive across the room. Not much time to deauthorize my games mid-flight.
@Lazureus: I am a person against any form of required internet-connection to activate, while I think it's pretty nice if they did, I still wouldn't be very grateful for EA.
On the other hand, if it is a joke, then they are dicks.
@flukielukie: Yes it was. I can no longer play Crysis: Warhead that I legitimately bought right when it was released. Why? Because overclocking my CPU means I've used up one of those installs! And I get treated to a message that says "Please purchase another license to play this game". No mention of a support number I can call or anything. I'm obviously in the wrong here.
So I decided to use a no-cd crack instead. Works great now!

Me as well. This is a major factor determining whether or not I purchase PC games these days.

This just proves it.
Activision was right to bail when they did... and this group is supported to be about HELPING PC gaming?
