<![CDATA[The Japanese Hardware Chart]]> I wish I could lead off this post with good news that Seaman 2 greased the way for a strong week of PlayStation 2 sales, but, unsurprisingly, it wasn't much of a hardware mover. Actually, the PlayStation 2 performed almost exactly as it had the week before, besting only the Xbox 360, sales of which dropped some 50% week-to-week. Wii sales continue to slump as Japanese gamers wait desperately for something new and worthwhile to play.

Sorry, it's really quite a dull week, hardware-wise. So here's a picture of a bunny with a crimson and black Nintendo DS Lite on its head.

  • Nintendo DS Lite - 70,608
  • PSP - 58,669
  • Wii - 24,932
  • PlayStation 3 - 17,130
  • PlayStation 2 - 10,281
  • Xbox 360 - 3,011

<![CDATA[The Japanese Software Chart]]> Seaman! Buckets and buckets of Seaman! That's what Japanese gamers gobbled up this week, as Sega's sequel to the Dreamcast test of patience from Vivarium for the PlayStation 2 topped the Japanese sales charts. The voice activated, missing link-raising sim just barely beat out Nintendo's newest non-game for the Nintendo DS, DS Bungaku Zenshuu, a collection of Japanese literature readable on the dual screen sensation.

The only other exciting sales news was the debut of Beautiful Katamari for the Xbox 360 cracking the top ten and Lair for the PlayStation 3 hanging tough in the top 30. Also, I'm sure many of you were curious about the placement of DS Nishimura Kyotaro Suspense Shin Tantei Series: Kyoto Atami Zekkai no Kotou - Satsui no Wana. It held strong for another week and should best the 100,000 mark any day now. Sleep well, sales figure faithful.

<![CDATA[Seaman 2 Controller Revealed]]>

This tiny little controller, believe it or not, is the controller for the new virtual australopithecus sim, Seaman 2. That bit that looks like a mouth clamp for sadomasochistic ritual in the middle? The controller's fairly-obvious microphone, as near as I can tell. Interestingly, it won't be available merely for the PS2, but special drivers will also allow it to work on the PC and Mac.

<![CDATA[Clips: Seaman 2 at TGS 06]]>

Ashcraft has been pleading with me not to post anyone else's TGS videos until his crackerjack team of urinal enthusiasts finish uploading their multi-part series of features detailing the bathrooms of TGS 2006. "Why highlight other people's content at the expense of our own original work?" he asked.

Whatever. This is the Seaman 2 presentation from yesterday's presser. There's a bit of gameplay, in which a filthy monkey takes time out from flinging excrement and hooting at the sky to briefly run to the water, then run back. I still don't quite understand how they can justify calling it Seaman 2 when the creature is a cromagnon. It's not even voiced by Leonard Nimoy! What the heck?

<![CDATA[Seaman 2 Details Announced]]> sm2.jpg

\Sega has officially unveiled details for the sequel to Seaman, the Dreamcast game that had you caring for a half man, half fish pet of the same name.

In Seaman 2 you will be caring for a miniature Neanderthal man, which begs the question, why call it Seaman 2? The premise is that some Russian company produces 3,000 clones of the little sub-men from bones found in Peking, China. Hmm, maybe they should have called this game Peakingman.

Like in the original game you will be caring for you pet with the controller and a microphone, so the PS2 game will ship with a special microphone-embedded controller.

The game hits Japan next year, but no U.S. release date has been set. Thank God they didn't release this for the Wii.

<![CDATA[Seaman 2 News Coming on Friday?]]> It looks like that long-awaited Seaman sequel will be officially announced this week. A year ago, Yoot Saito was confirmed by Sega to be working on a sequel to his eccentric, bossy fish-man game. Then a year of silence followed.

No longer, though. According to 1UP, we'll be getting details on Seaman 2 come Friday, along with the platform and release date.

1UP speculates that it'll be for the DS or Wii, but various forumers have said the website confirms it for the PS2. The website's down right now, so that's just rumors. But if true, that's a shame. Frankly, I've always had shameful dreams about getting Yoot Saito's Seaman on my WII.
