I'm perplexed at how people can be so stubbornly dense. In 2007 and 2008 at least the claims of "year of the PS3" were incorrect but defensible. For 2009, though, really? We're still not catching on yet?

I mean honestly, it's time to face some harsh realities. The world is in the middle of an economic downturn, the PS3 is expensive and extremely difficult to reduce costs on, and it isn't catching public interest. It would take a lot more than a couple of good exclusives and a slight price drop for Sony to turn things around at this point.
the PS3 isn't really that expensive though, lets compare with an x360. It is 299.99 for an xbox 360 right? but then a years xbox live gold membership sets you back another 50, so you're already paying 350 for something that is still a lot less than a PS3 in terms of hardware..
(no blu-ray, restricted live membership (it will expire and have to be renewed), more expensive hdd's... and for the most part, the same games). You're not making that much of a saving by getting an xbox 360, none at all if you take into account you'll be renewing your xbox live membership and potential RROD leading to buying a new console (not trolling, but just pointing out that A LOT of ppl buy a new Console after RROD instead of getting it fixed. that is a lot of expense!)
yeh sure the console itself for the PS3 is more expensive, but thats not to say that the 360 is much cheaper in the long run... not when you take into account the extras you have to pay for after you get it (xbox live gold).
maybe those who want to buy a PS3 but have been waiting for a price-drop, could take that into consideration to 'justify' the purchase, there are no extra costs to Sony after getting it. and it's only the equivalent of 1 game more expensive than the xbox (excluding the Arcade package which is too basic)
@cyruss: Not that i think replying is smart nor going to be well received, but there is a flaw in the"look at the the hidden costs argument" used here. The things you are including cost wise are OPTIONAL. Im going to make a few assumumptions, and if I'm wrong , apologies, no malice intended.
I assume you are both tecnologically savvy, at least compared to the "average" person. You are both probaly discerning intelligent humans that can see big picture money wise. Honestly, I assume most of the Kotaku readers are, hence us actually being here ;-D
But we are the minority. Step into a Gamestop(uggh), or a Wal-Mart. I can asure you there are many more people that havent a clue as to Blu-ray advantages. They dont know 1080p or Frame rates. They DO know that they can buy a game playing machine cheaper from MS than Sony. They DO know that if its a gift, that the intended receipient of said game playing machine can worry about playing "on the lines" themself. They DO know that they have a movie playing machine already(because honestly, most people have DVD players) Do the math.
The PS3 is too much money and offers far less in terms of games compared to the 360.
Hate to break it to this guy, but it's more likely to be the year of the 360 then the PS3. Sales in Japan continually grow ever so slightly, and the line-up of games is always equal or better then the PS3.
@niall077:If sales for a game are as you put it.. "shit" then you won't be playing any future follow ups to that game and you may not even be playing them on a follow up to the system they are on.
I love all the dissmissive "Sales don't matter" from the SDF on here, it shows how clueless some folks are.
the only way for 2009 to be the year of the PS3, the following needs to occur:
-Killzone 2 is critically acclaimed as an FPS for the ages.
-God of War 3 comes out for 09
-FF 13 comes out at least in Japan for 09
-100 dollar price drop
-all the mentioned games from the fellow kotakuites must come out on TIME.
- and some drop in blu-rays to sweeten the deal.
sony so far is the only console with any bi games coming out for 09, but the year in 09 is very young. we have yet to see if MS and Ninty have any cards up their sleeves.
@Gray665: This. Why do so many people feel that one console is going to get edged out of the business? I mean, fanboyishness aside, is there any reason to think that any company is in danger of Xing its video game dept? Really Sony and Microsoft have used 2 different marketing strategies, to reach 2 different groups of people. There are sony people and there are microsoft people, and then there are those i like to call "overlap"(or people that appreciate good games no matter what platform they may exist on). Preferences will exist, and yes, price point is a preference, just as are library of games, functionality, and over all perceived value. Unless you're the Wii. Every year is the year of the Wii, at least until Nintendo puts the newest cash cow on the market.
he's talking about the games like killzone 2, god of war 3, infamous, ratchet and clank sequel(possibly team ico game, possibly something on FF13 versus, possibly uncharted 2) etc. in comparison to the known 360 line up for 2009, the 360 doesnt seem to have anything at all. no gears of war, and a halo rts that looks worse than your average rts'.
it does seem to me that there isnt anything up for the 360 next year, some of you may be looking forward to halo wars, but that some of you isnt more than 200,000 people, i think the 360'll flop next year as well. nothing to say about the wii though, i'm still on the wii side as well, im a pswii fanboy.(or is it wiiS3?)
@excel_excel:You have to forgive him, those fanboy blinders he wears so proudly for Sony make it imposable for him to see any other way. And somehow he's escaped Spoony..for now.
It won't be the year of the PS3 until multiplatform games stop sucking on the PS3 compared to the 360. Every story I read about any sorts of issues that appear on one system that don't on another are inevitably either easily patched software issues, or hardware/graphics issues that exist solely on the PS3.

Bundles for Killzone 2 and GoW3 should move a couple of units for 'em.
I don't think the 360 or the PS3 can catch the Wii anytime soon.
If FF13 is released next year then it's really the year of the PS3. If that with God of War 3 doesn't save 'em nothing will...

FF13 wont push hardware in the US.

So for me (we'll what I bought it in) was
2005 was year of the 360
2006 was year of the DS
2007 was year of the PSP
2008 was year of the Wii
2009 year of the PS3?

I think he meant that those were the consoles he bought each year.
