I've been trying for hours to get online, but it keeps telling me the steam server is busy... effing free weekend. I payed for this damn game, now let me play it...
People complain when the classes have changed because they're class hasn't been updated and they keep getting pwned by the news weapons.
Sad, but true.
Why don't they just wait for their class to be updated? So they can shut up? I don't have a preference of a class, so I don't really care, I just want to play the bloody game. And I'm sure if you were good enough, the new weapons would be no match for you anyway.
@Edairu: I was just commenting on my view of the situation, my take of the action if you were, I was talking about the topic at hand, which was the TF2 update, I'm sorry it didn't follow the article completely, but I had a strong view I felt the need to express. I apologize.
The fact is that valve has completely changed the system with which new items are unlocked Without ANY explanation as to "how" these items are unlocked.
By simply making them "Random" takes any and all skill out of the equation. This causes much frustration among players who enjoy challenge created by having to unlock achievements in order to obtain new items... You are all correct in saying "there will always be complainers" However for those of us genuinely interested in the challenge presented by milestones, there is now less incentive to play the game. Especially during a free weekend... I will wait until the the underage among us go back to school before I resume my headshoting.
@patient215: There's still a challenge in getting the achievements, it's just that now the purpose of the achievements is the achievements themselves, and not to earn new toys.
Granted, I'm not saying the new system is working, but you have to see how requiring players to earn weapons in a multiplayer game unbalances it in favor of those with skill.
Crap!!! I should have gotten the KGB before the update!!! Only unlockable I hadn't gotten!!! Ugh and now I have TWO Flare Guns? C'mon Valve I've always respected you WHAT IS THIS?
@SuperZombieMonkey: I know how you feel. I'm really pissed off with this random shite. I was on an insane achievement quest the past while and managed to get all the heavys, pyros and 2 of the medics unlockables. Now, that's all negated and all my hard work was for jack. Seriously Valve, really dickish move.
@Edairu: No. If you haven't noticed, being about 2 feet from the computer monitor means that a 24-inch has the same effect as a 50-inch from across the room
Although this isn't an MMO, it does have RPG elements to it with online Player vs Player action. Accordingly, it is almost required (maybe in the ToS somewhere?) that the vocal minority complain about something.
You may not know this, but whining is about the only outlet people have for something like this. There's no monthly subscription, so it isn't like they can cancel that to make a fiscal point. It's actually about the only appropriate response.
Maybe you would just suck it up and allow a game you love to fall apart, but some people want to voice their opinions.
I feel like the community's expression is justified, but do you think the randomization concept is fundumentally bad or just imperfectly implemented here? I hated the achievement method as it only further offset the balance of serious/hardcore players ability to dominate games versus newer or less serious players. In addition, I'm sure you saw the mess that was useless achievement farming. Personally, I find it difficult enough to encourage players to use classes that are actually useful to the team (I have like 24 hours as Medic because I actually care), but the achievement farming just meant at least a week or two of the worst least considerate play you would ever hope to see.
@Kynes: I wasn't completely satisfied with the achievement system but it gave me something to work towards when playing TF2 which was nice. As for the random drops, I think if it was properly implemented and perhaps not so random at the same time as being random it wouldn't be so bad. (example: If a player you're dominating has an unlock you don't, walking over their body gets you that unlock - shitty example but that's just off the top of my head).
I'm of the same mind as yourself though. Even though I've been trying to farm achievements, I try to do it within the confines of winning the game. If there's no medic or just 1 medic, I'll bring one out. Similiarly, if there's need for a demoman to take out some equipment, I'll switch over.
@-MasterDex-: Oh puh-leese Barbie, it's not like the game is actually broken.
You are right however, I don't play this game often, mostly because I get bad ping on most servers and the game has issues with my hardware that causes huge loading times when I join a server. But I have played this game enough to know that this is not that big of a deal, and certainly not a game breaking issue.
@MtlAngelus: But with the way it was upon implementation, it was a bit game-breaking. Guys were staying in spectator mode doing nothing and getting unlocks, other guys were joining servers and getting 3 unlocks within 10 minutes. Then the guys that were on the servers contributing to their team for hours on end were either getting duplicates of unlocks they already had or no unlocks at all. Don't try tell me that there's not something seriously wrong with that.
@-MasterDex-: Yes wrong, No game-breaking. It's something you point out and await a fix for, while you enjoy the game regardless of whether you got the newest shiniest unlockable or not. Not something to relentlessly whine about while making dumb threats of never playing the game again.
@MtlAngelus: I agree there but I can understand where the anger was coming from. Valve said nothing about the change, released it broken and expected people to be happy with it. It was premature on Valves part and they should have spent more time on it before releasing it.
@EnigmaNemesis: Yeah, it isn't about balance. To get new weapons it is entirely random, using one class more doesn't mean you have a better chance of getting their items. So if you like playing spy you may not get spy items for a long time.
It is also bugged, I picked up two weapons I already had.
Try getting some comprehension, and not take things out of context.
"I win" button, easily illustrates the complaints ones have with not getting the guns they want, etc. Or ones seeing others get theirs too fast, randomness and all.
You seem very self satisfied with your posts, but you are genuinely replying primarily about things which are neither the topic of this Kotaku post, nor the topic of the community discussion here.
The method of equipment distribution is controversial, and understandably so. The distribution rate is also buggy as Valve has admitted. I don't think there is anything wrong with a player being frustrated with an admitted bug. I've seen no one but you raise the specter of class complaints or dissatisfaction.
That's not a bug. They're going to implement equipment trading. It may seem pretty shitty though if you have 3 backburners and no kritzkrieg.
Personally I was presumably affected by the drop rate bug as I played for a good 4+ hours last night and did not receive any drops. A tad disappointing.
@jlburgin: I'm one of the "10 hours and nothing" folks. Normally, in a situation like this, I would likely be mad at people who had gotten lucky... but I ain't mad at you guys. I'm just mad that TF2 has changed to "world drops". TF MMO confirmed.

@Dangeresque Wants to Take You For a Ride: I'm on the same boat... played for a hella long time, only got repeat weapons. Hopefully I'll get to experience the update some time

Release - Players are convinced the game is broken. Despite having no frame of reference to judge the game with, it is still broken.
First Patch - Players are convinced the game is broken. They reminisce in the forums about how wonderful the game was before the patch.
Second Patch - Players are convinced the game is broken.

The cycle continues until the end of time.

My point is, there is always whiners about one class able to do something over another, REGARDLESS of what they something is.
It is always this way in class based games online.

It's bugged, but not because of that. That happens.

I am talking whining in general about one class over another in a class based online game.
