I felt both lacked "soul". I never cared who lived or died, and never really felt absorbed by the world. Though Gears of War 2 belly flopped it still had it's own essence. Resistance felt like a hospital. Clean, sterile, and efficient. Too by the numbers, too clean. #resistance2
I too was a bit shaken up by the control changes when I first picked up R2. I got used to them relatively quickly, but the biggest thing I missed in R2 was the bullet dodging. There was something strategic to the gameplay of FoM that was all but abandoned in R2.
R2 was much better paced over all, and I thought the Chicago level was a masterpiece. I thoroughly enjoyed R2 and can't wait for the third one, but I'd love to see some of the strategic gameplay from FoM come back. (The gun wheel and bullet dodging.)
Oh yeah, another thing I missed in R2 was campaign co-op, especially split-screen. Bring that back too? #resistance2
Too much bending over and catering to the whims of those who don't matter.
I remember the big hubbub about the Cathedral level in the first, and how the Church of England through a shitfit, and Insomniac started apologizing and backpedaling about it.
Shoulda said, "Look, people need real things in the real world to defend. It was SUPPOSED to be tragic that it happened, but this was A) a work of fiction taking place in B) and alternate dimension, so C) shut the fuck up and deal with it.
I understand we live in a global economy, but it's getting stupid with all the censorship. European games can't have Nazis, Australian games can't feature anything more violent than balloons, and here in the US N'Gai Croal throws a hissy fit about anything Resident Evil, or that even vaguely looks like racism if you squint real hard and jam your fingers in your ears and shout "LA LA LA LA LA!" at the top of your lungs.
Bottom line, Insomniac, go with what you know to be right and fuck them if they can't take a joke, otherwise you just compromise your art into mediocrity.
ps-- Yes, I read your initial post, N'Gai, and all fucking 60 pages of comments, and to the whole shebang I say, "Quit crying wolf". Racism is a wound that will not heal if you rip off the bandage and smack it to make it bleed every time a new person comes along to impress, and the only concerns your criticism of the game brought to mind is that, shit, if a zombie outbreak happens in a non-caucasian country, they're just fucked if the most highly trained agent isn't black.
Oh, and one more thing: Zombies, my good man, come from Voodoo culture. Voodoo, you might recall, seeded in Africa and found its home in Haiti. So zombies in Haiti isn't racist, it's a homage. And besides, wasn't the second playable character from... Africa?
Do they really need people to spell it out for them?
The first game, while a little lacking in some gameplay areas (like AI) utilised its awesome idea, WW humans VS space aliens.
But in the 2nd game, there was barely a hint of the humans WW era afoot, the soldiers were in what looked like traditional Hurr durr Space marine uniform.
2nd one had pretty graphics and better gameplay, but in exchange lost everything that set it apart from every other shooter...
They should be upset they broke a perfectly good game with the second. Resistance 2 was terrible, no slip screen co-op story mode? only two weapons at once? Only getting like 2 clips per gun? Yeah that's what I love about a shooter is to conserve ammo. #resistance2
Everyone is trying to appeal to the COD hardcore fan. But what they don't get is, someone who only likes COD will not like something that is "like" COD. I like Modern Warfare and I'm getting the second one, but I know people that only like COD. Even if you made your game exactly like COD, they are NOT going to like it. They only like playing COD games.
So, I suggest making something different because you are not pulling hardcore COD fans away from their game, and if its just like COD you won't get the people who are willing to try a different type of FPS because we will think its exactly like COD so I might as well play COD. #resistance2
@Art7egacy: Interesting point. I have friends who are big time into COD, to the point they will hardly touch another game. And any game "like" COD won't get their attention. The only time I've been able to get them to try a different game is if it is indeed different from COD, such as Borderlands. #resistance2
I think, and this is being honest, one of the problems might have been that he referenced NeoGAF forums. I could be wrong, but there is more hate on those boards than any other message boards I've ever seen. #resistance2
@LetItRane:
..but somehow they still manage to be heard enough to define "the mainstream". Apparently Guerilla Games people read NeoGAF, according to Eric Boltjes. Which he pulled up in defense of making the control-scheme in kz2 less difficult, and much less immersive - along with unbalancing the game, because it changed substantially from what was beta-tested.
But hey - instead of doing something new, why not take the attiude that... if enough people complain that bullets will do damage - then bullets should just do less damage. Because giving people what they ask for, on internet forums, without an argument other than "waaah" - is just so much better than going for what the devs think is a good idea for the game.
History show countless examples of this. #resistance2
@K-dash:
...ok. What about: "there are no place on the intertrons with as much misplaced arrogance or pretentiousness as NeoGAF"?
It's pretty amazing, really. The explicit argument of the entire site is that since people want the simplest and least complex solution to everything, so no one can argue against the noise of NeoGAF. Because since stupidity and arrogance exists to the exclusion of everything else, the weight of those unargued opinions must always be larger than anything else, because they are many - and never mind impossible to argue against. After all, they're stupid and arrogant and won't change their opinions. While everyone else who are intelligent can be amenable.
Hence, their orchestrated floods of fake posters to developer forums, along with the self-promotion the staff engages in, to inflate both the site's importance and the significance of stupidity.
It's really my favourite site on the internets, really. Making a stand for originality in the gaming industry, and introducing us to instant tropes such as "the award-winning story-telling of Infinity Ward and Bungie". #resistance2
@nipsen: This reminds of of Treyarch's community manager JD2020 in explaining the reason the overpowered MP40 would never change in CoD: World at War. Because people complaining about it on forums were a vocal minority. That there was a far greater number of gamers that were the "silent majority", those who didn't care about the Mp40 being overpowed. In other words, the biggest lie and BS I've ever heard from a CM. #resistance2
@VastShadowz41:
Right. They fear the noise NeoGAF and other sites are able to drum up. It's the same every time.
They know that reasonable people don't have the time or dedication to make an impact over something as silly as just a game. So no matter how much sense it would make to adjust the game into a more wholesome experience - that might perhaps be fun to play for more people - they fear doing so for bad press.
The KZ2 controls was a perfect example of that - the review that was used as "many reviews say the controls are shit" for the noise-operation - actually insisted that while the controls were untraditional, you would get used to them very quickly. But GG caved to people who had decided they were going to hate it no matter what, even if it meant that large amounts of the community - and the developers themselves, Seb said as much - would have to adapt and change the way they played.
And what we got was generic shooter, and a game that could've been unfathomably better online, and much longer lived.
So here's a question for developers who are depressed about "user feedback", particularly when it come to making things more like COD: do you think bad press at NeoGAF is going to affect sales more than making a game that only appeals to the ultimate hardcore COD gamers?
It's a serious question, because it certainly looks like it's a very hard and difficult issue to decide on. #resistance2
@rich8606: You called the Co-Op in R1 Brilliant? All that happens is a second, unnamed black version of the main character shows up, who takes all the bullets and none of the glory. LAME. #resistance2
When did games turn into, "Let's all sit down at a table and tell you how to make your product?" Feedback is one thing, but building and selling games isn't a democracy. The sense of entitlement by gamers is weak. Buy a game, or don't, but stop trying to make it everything you each want it to be, or you'll just fuck it up.
When you buy a house you choose a house, but if you want it, well, the way YOU want it, you do a thing called build it yourself. Otherwise you take what's out there. AND THAT'S A HOUSE! I can't relate to sitting on your asses playing games, but not knowing shit about building one, and yet thinking you have a voice to determine what the product should be.
This article just sparked these thoughts, and I noticed that in some of the comments in the article, "What Do You Hate About Games", Kotaku fans were bringing up how the sense of entitlement is awful. The latest boycott on L4D2 with those two jerks is one of the latest examples of this. All that energy: why don't you go run your own business? Sorry, off topic, but if I was Resistance I'd feel pretty bummed too. #resistance2
Well then developers are entitled to every person gushing over their games. Gamers are entitled to their opinion. If gamers want to tell a developer how to make a game, they can go ahead to do so. Developers don't have to listen to gamers either. Look at IW. They want to continue making their online matchmaking on the pc despite gamers protesting against it. Do they have to listen to us? No. Do we have to lie down and praise whatever they shit out? No we do not. It works both ways. Just as we are not entitled to developers listening to our every whim, developers are not entitled to our money and opinions. #resistance2
I own both games and I thought the SP of R2 was fantastic. The MP was really solid as well, and all-in-all better than the first game.
My major disappointment was that I couldn't play through the SP campaign with a friend. The 'mission' based co-op to me was ok... but playing through R1 couch-co-op through the campaign was a helluva lot of fun.
Hear that Insomniac? Bring back the co-op style from R1 so I can play through the campaign with with a friend! #resistance2
I guess I was one of those guys he was referring to...but I've always kept my criticism very constructive. A lot of the other NeoGAF Resistance 1 fans weren't even fans of other games like Halo or CoD so they wouldn't know a good game if it slapped them in the face. #resistance2
Strange I felt resistance 2 was fantastic. The addition of great multiplayer was the icing on the cake. What they did with co-op play and how many different levels and the skill trees really set a standard many should follow. The options to mute people or invite as friends in game was excellent I wish drake 2 had this. Also the online connection speed was very fast and I felt they really supported their game. Everyone I played with loved the game. My only disappointment was they never released new maps for cooperative play as dlc. I would have paid for 3 new maps with how good they were. I look forward to resistance 3 and feel the team at insomniac has nothing to be upset about but instead should take off their hats and bow......excellent job on the ps3. #resistance2
I thought Insomniac would know better then to let their personal joy ride on the viewpoints of coretards across the internet. Even if the 2nd wasn't that hot, it was not at all a bad game. #resistance2
@Foxstar is in love with Kotaku's two Brians.: Considering they totally understand it was recieved favorably and nobody is denying it was not at all a bad game, I'd say your "FUCK THE CORE GAMERS" agenda is showing through a little bit more heavily than, well, every single other comment you make. #resistance2
