Complex Controls? Its a dumbed down version of Syphon Filters controls. Hiding and leaning against walls is automatic, theres no other options for nightvision or anything. Theres no melee attacks. You cant crouch.
The controls are embarrassingly casual. Im surprised you said theyre complex.
I'm loving the game ,but my main issue with Sony distribution is why isn't the game on the store. The other regions picked this up on the PSN store, but yet we are yielding over to the retailers(Gamestop). Time to make a stand and move to digital distribution in a serious fashion.
I've only played the first level so far and I'm loving it. The fact that I also loved Sony Bend's previous two games (the two Syphon Filter PSP games) might attribute a lot to it. They feel quite the same. Except the firefights are more intense in Retribution.
I was a bit confused with the controls as well the first few minutes. The weapons I've used so far have been solid. I haven't played any of the Resistance games for the PS3 so I really can't tell if they're unique guns or not.
I know the auto-aiming is there but I still prefer to pump 'em full of lead manually. I mean headshots still needs to be done manually.
Solid review. I've yet to read one where the reviewer had qualms about the game's length, graphics or scope of the game.
I might be in the minority here but I love PSP games wherein they feel like they're home console games.
I picked it up last Thursday and no other game has graced my UMD drive since. I haven't even touched multiplayer (and probably won't do much with it since I don't really care for online play), but the single-player campaign is beyond robust.
It really feels like a console-quality game in terms of length, depth, presentation, etc. If Resistance: Retribution is any indication of the level of quality we can expect from the PSP iterations of Sony's PlayStation 3 franchises, then my interest in Motorstorm: Arctic Edge and Little Big Planet has immediately tripled.
And for what it's worth, I haven't found the story or dialogue to be bad. It won't win any awards, but it's nothing like the crimes against language that Capcom routinely commits.
@KillerOnTheRoad: Actually, yes. I would rather they did not offer them and instead spent the time adding shit to the game I bought, not to shit that requires me to buy something else.
@Unfather: Unlike bluray based titles, the UMDs can only hold about a gig and a half... That's not much game, particularly if the title is any amount of pretty.
Seems like a really decent PSP title, which is nice. I'm glad Sony isn't copping out on that platform just yet, since the PSP2 is virtually close by. I mean, the PSP is getting dated.
@Jandlecack: The "PSP2" has to be close by indeed, as both Patapon 2 and Resistance: Retribution (both high-profile titles) were released on the PSN at the same time as retail.
If that's not paving the way for digital distribution on the platform, I don't know what is.
Why did the aliens build an entire city taller than the Eiffel Tower behind the Eiffel Tower and then destroy it? Because there's nothing that tall (or even half as tall as the Eiffel) in Paris.
Are you questioning the chronological order of it's destruction, or questioning why they didn't use it for something?
I bet they didn't use it for something because it's basically just a big useless piece of metal. It's only there to look at, or look from. I doubt it has any facilities for aircraft landing docks or anything...
As for waiting to destroy it until after building a huge structure behind it... it was probably easier to flatten nearby building and build there than it was to rip down the Eiffel. They probably had more of an urgency with the first buildings and didn't have time to tear this huge one down. Once things settled a bit, and the Alien kids started attending school regularly, they found time to handle the Eiffel. My two cents.
No, I'm saying that if this game takes place in WWII, there isn't a tall building next to or even in the same city as the Eiffel. The artists added it, for effect, and then didn't even get the perspective right, since as pictured, something behind the Eiffel would be taller than it.
@Bowler: That's the beauty of alternate history: they could dress the Tour Eiffel in a giant penis costume with huge cotton candy balls if they felt like it.
...I'm sorta glad they didn't, though.
But seriously: in the alternate world of Resistance, the Eiffel tower is imprisoned between a dozen skyscrapers because the French feared a reoccurrence of the tragic "Flower incident", where steel towers take over a whole city and turn it monochrome.
I've been waiting for a quality PSP game this year. Glad to see this makes the cut.
I don't own a PS3 so I haven't played any of the first 2 games. Will that hinder the overall experience?
Seems to me this is in the same gameplay style as the Syphon Filter PSP games (same developer and all) which isn't a bad thing. The Syphon Filter games on the PSP were amazing games.
@excaliburps: No. This is a spin off if you will. New main character, different country and a few references to Hale (main character in R1 + R2). There are plenty of intel from what I heard/read so even if you don't get something, you can always refer to those or get an explanation from a cutscene or something.

Sometimes it bugs me when people complain about the PSP getting ports or whatnot. I mean for people like me who can't afford a PSP now, it helps a lot...
@excaliburps: Sorry what? I didn't really get that last statement.
Resistance Retribution is not a port, but an original(?) portable game based off a console game. I would also think if it was a game like Resistance Retribution then you would know less about it, which won't really help at all for a person who doesn't know anything about the Resistance universe.
Unless you meant *PS3 and not PSP :/
Not trying to be an ass, but it was confusing, thus I'm not even too sure WTF I just wrote.

@goldwings: Haha no problem man my post was a bit confusing.
I sort of went off a tangent there. I meant Retribution was the only I could play part of the Resistance series of games (for now). I know a lot of people will complain if and when an Uncharted games goes to the PSP. They'll bitch that all the PSP has are ports of its console brother's games. Which isn't that big of a deal really...
@excaliburps: That's what i don't understand. These aren't ports. This is like a gameboy getting a mario game... admittedly the psp is close to a ps2 so it can do almost everything it can(and some things the ps2 can't), but these are just PSP entries in the series, they aren't 'ports'. And by ports I mean they take a ps2 game and add some extra levels or content to an existing game, they are built to be on the psp, and play on the psp, nor do I get why these games are suddenly bad, when they themselves are highly rate and enjoyed... they are invalid as good games how? Portable entries to a game series isn't a bad thing to me... (other than the controls and missions in the Katamari game making the game far harder than it should be).
@Ehardergardens: We're of the same thinking when it comes to these "ports".
I say "ports" because a lot of people keep on bitching that when new games like these are announced, they deem them as ports. Even if they're a completely separate entity from the source material. Take GoW:Chains of Olympus.
"they take a ps2 game and add some extra levels or content to an existing game, they are built to be on the psp, and play on the psp, nor do I get why these games are suddenly bad, when they themselves are highly rate and enjoyed"
Agreed. Just wish other people feel the same way. I'd rather have these so called "ports" and spin-offs than no game at all. Most of the time they're of excellent quality as well...
I'm interested in what that "infected mode" thing is. Is it a game mode you get on Resistance 2, or something for resistance retribution, because if it's anything like horde for GeoW, then I think I'd prefer to use a Dualshock 3 to play it. (i know you can hook up your DS3 to the PSP.
10 hours and a remixed campaign for another 10 hours if you have R2 and a PS3...you can "infect" your PSP and get additional guns and abailities. plus the fact that you can hook up a Dual Shock 3 and play is an added bonus.
If people are choosing whether or not to buy a game on the basis of a review then I'd say you're making a mistake. Reviews are entirely subjective and if more and more demos come out, they will be made all the more redundant.
@Tig Besticles: The problem with demos is that they don't represent the overall experince or quality of the game. For example, Valkyria Chronicles had an OK demo that showed the visuals and some mechanics, but after buying the game the demo is in my humble opinion disconnected from the story. The game itself was an amazing experience!
Also I'd like to add to what Tig Besticles: said. Reviews are very subjective. How can you be sure the person who's review you're reading has the same taste as you? Especially genre-wise. If you asked me to review a racing game it'd probably get a low score since I don't dig that genre much. And so on...
That's why I dig Kotaku's reviews. No score but factual basis on what things you like and might not like.
Resistance: Retribution is the start of Sony's surge; the first of a planned wave of blockbuster brands that the company hopes will make 2009 an "exciting year for PSP"
Guess it's time to dust off the PSP now. But I'm warning you Sony, if I've dusted my PSP for a boring year, there'll be hell to pay.
@-MasterDex-: looks like it will be a good year...LBP on PSP, a new Motorstorm that looks good, Assassin's Creed was announced...this year will be better than the last 3 in PSP land.
@zPhreak: lol! You serious? The European PSN gets everything last! We had to wait ages for the Patapon demo for PSP and SFIIHD on PS3. We're just getting a lucky break this time.
