wow, free content and home at the same time, and christmas in the same month? this is the best month of the year...the last one, essentially the credits of the movie.
Not trying to be sarcastic, just legitimately curious, as I assumed PSN was just like XBL, that when a new game in a franchise came out everyone immediately dropped the old one.
@Roufuss: Actually last I checked (about a week or two ago) their was still a fairly active community.Lots of custom games, and ranked matches were still incredibly easy to get into.
Free map paks are nice. I'll probably do for those what I did with the limited edition Dead Space content; "buy" it, not pay anything for it, but get the freebie license added to my system so when I WANT to use it, I can DL it for free.
Thanks Insomniac but could you do something about the mouse and keyboard thing we talked about? I appreciate the free swag...not that I give a shit about it...but really...I'm four trophies away from 100% and competitive mode is frustrating to no end without m/kb. Come on, don't be a prick about it. Just give a damn patch for crying out loud.
@Wolfers: awwwww, don't wanna get pwned by the godlike might of m/kb...split the servers and be done with it. Case closed. Epic did it with Unreal Tournament 3 so what's the damn problem? Just split the fucking servers. M/kbers on this side, dual analogers on this side and the middle for those that just want to play and don't care what you use.
Resistance was the first game we got with our PS3 and it was a disappointment of untold magnitude. Lack lustre and poorly thought out. A hodge podge of Halo, Half-life and some Call of Duty tossed in. Uninspiring to say the least.
So I came into the idea of Resistance 2 with much trepidation. Got into the beta and actually had quite a bit of fun playing with my fiancee in the co-op.
But it grew pretty stale (likely due to just being 1 map). But it's mainly the actual gameplay is very very stale. Which is unfortunate since I love the Ratchet games. Resistance is just incredibly dull when compared to other FPSs.
Sure, the bullet points you can throw up on the back of the box are impressive, and some of the visuals are great, but overall the game is a drag to play. Which is unfortunate since I wished I could love the Resistance games as much as the Ratchet titles.
• I agree to an extent with the "cheap deaths": I think the predators could've been handled better than they were. The fact that the furies are invulnerable is total bullshit though. There were a few too many "learn by dying" sequences for my tastes as well. Overall Resistance 2 doesn't allow for a tremendous amount of dynamic strategy...but there are several points in the game where I felt free to experiment (without fear of immediate penalization/death).
• Completely disagree with low marks for the story. I thought the story was sufficiently engaging to hook me for the campaign. It's a sum total whose separate parts have been seen before - but it doesn't diminish the entertaining way Insomniac sewed them together.
• Completely disagree with low marks for the setting/design. Resistance 2 is brilliant from a visual standpoint...and not at all similar to the myriad World War 2 Europe set pieces we've been treated to already. In fact, I can't think of a single game off the top of my head that's provided the sort of '50s Americana imagery Resistance 2 is steeped in. Admittedly, it doesn't do for the 1950's what Bioshock did for Art Deco, but it's still a very visually arresting title.
• Loved the fact that this game actually features bosses. And not just bigger enemies that you meet once at the end of a stage and then pop-up as underlings later on. No, these are ginormous, "16-bit glory days" kinds of "big bosses". They fucking rule.
• I do miss the following things (or think they were done better in Resistance: Fall of Man):
1) The "weapons wheel": seriously, only two waepons at a time when I use to be able to carry around this killer arsenal? Boo.
2) The third-person, grainy black and white death animations were far better than the cheap-looking "bodiless eyeball" in Resistance 2.
3) Vehicles. Seriously, those were fun and well-done in Fall of Man. Why'd they leave them out of the sequel? A boat sequence in Louisiana? Piloting a shuttle in California?
4) Narration. It did add something to the story-telling. I've always felt one of the single biggest flaws of Western game design is the insistence on presenting everything story-related "in-game". Honestly, I'm shocked this game even features cinematic sequences (a huge plus, BTW).
That's pretty much it though. Overall I think Resistance 2 is a great FPS with some truly epic moments. Well worth the wait and my $60.
@Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic: great write up! Can I add lack of mouse and keyboard support to that list of negatives. I know I've said it time and again but dammit, I have a kick ass mouse and keyboard for my ps3 and I want to use it for other shooters not called UT3.
Also, multiplayer is excellent in R2 but I can't be the only one that wants some of the original stages back for the sequel. I want the Busyard and Manchester
@Strangelove: With the single-layer, Multiplayer, and the Online Co-op (which I guess counts as multiplayer) it takes 420 hours to fully max out everything and find every piece of intel and stuff. The singleplayer isn't too long though.

I just like pointing out things I find amusing. I'm getting a PS3 sometime in the next few months (mostly for the Blu-Ray player), and Resistance 1 & 2 are definitely on my list of games to buy. True, I own a 360 (which is pretty much a Rock Band 2 machine at this point), but I actually do the vast majority of my gaming on PC.
I am the only one that really does not like the main character. I know he is supposed to be a faceless bland 1 dimensional character but for some reason just knowing that I am playing him makes me not want to play the game. Either way I'll rent it hopefully is not as bland as the first one.
Please don't even try that argument. For one, Nathan Hale went from a pretty much silent protagonist to a run of the mill rugged voice marine archetype.
Gordon Freeman never reacts because YOUR reactions are Gordon Freeman's actions. That's why silent protagonists in a game like Dead Space don't work as well, because you see their emotion but at the same time they are not verbally saying anything. That is the complete opposite of Half Life, or even Portal. If HL games had Gordon Freeman in cut scenes spouting off one lines and stuff...well, it just wouldn't be the same. Even though he was underdeveloped in the first game, Nathan Hale came off more strong in my opinion, at least compared to Resistance 2.
@Sammo21: Does he speak in the game? I only played the first one and I didn't remember him speaking then. If he does remain voiceless I don't see how you could have any more of an opinion on him then Gordon Freeman. It's basically up to the story of the game and with zero interaction from you other then enforcing some alien beat down I don't see how the character who has no words whatsoever can have more of an impact on you then another character with the same verbal skills.
Eternal sludge and perfectly paced? Im sorry but surely there is simply no way a game can ever be both of those things. Unless it was perfectly paced in it's awful sludgyness?
Tell you what, if you can play through the campaign just once on normal without screaming, throwing the controller, or banging your head on something, than I will buy you a taco. @Detre:
@otakutopia: I'm going through on hard and I think it's challenging, but not annoyingly challenging. The first one got kinda crazy in that case because you put about 7000 bullseye bullets into someone before you kill them, but this one seems a little more realistic, if you can even say that
@jpneiswi: I'm with you on that score. I'm playing it on hard and it's difficult but not insanely hard. I also agree with the first Resistance where you needed far too many shots to take down enemies. This Resistance is definitely better balanced. Some people just don't have the chops to hang with the big boys. Oh well.
What's with this "sucky campaign mode" idea? I'm enjoying the Campaign mode.
@Vecha: I'm a PC fan too lol. Look, Ive seen supernatural skills on PC. I've killed some of those guys and been killed by them. What console gamers don't understand is they haven't seen "cheap one-hit kills" until they've play the best in Quake3 Team Arena or any PC UT. I've seen guys hit a jump pad in Q3 at a dead run do a 180 degree turn while flying through the air and kill someone with a headshot using a railgun. Dead...there's no regenerating health. Your ass is wasted. period.
Then we have UT. Where even on PS3 I was playing a pal on my friend's list with a group of other guys. my friend proceeded to grab some jump boots and pulled out a shock cannon. He shot the secondary shot from the shock cannon in a crowd of people duking it out and then jumped a good 40 feet in the air with the jump boots. While sailing upward fired, the primary shot from the shock cannon to get the shock core combo and killed two or the three guys fighting. He did all of this in the span of 2 seconds. Maybe three. mouse and keyboard FTW
Some would say that's cheap. I say that's skill. Resistance2 has enemies that use their abilities to kill you dead. You job is to not get killed. simple. lol
I still have not had the chance to play it, mostly due to the fact I am knee deep in Fallout 3 (PC). The online portion of Resistance 2 looks like it's fantastic, even if the single player leaves something to be desired.
Multiplayer is fantastic. Campaign feels just "meh". Maybe I'm becoming extremely desensitized to FPS stories though. But with the million FPS that have come out in the past two years, I wouldn't blame myself. Would you?

But it was well-done, and I can't wait to dive into the co-op and competitive multiplayer.
