<![CDATA[Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles Hands-On Again]]> From the get go, I've had my doubts about Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. This past weekend's Tokyo Game Show represented my third chance at going hands-on with the survival horror spin-off, with my impression of the game changing very little. Now, with the exception of Wario Ware Smooth Moves and Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure, I'm not a motion control convert. And the Wii Zapper? I'd rather just not discuss it. At TGS, I finally got to experience the game with the third control scheme, using the nunchuk and Wii-mote sans Zapper.

Game Developer Magazine editor Brandon Sheffield was kind enough to be my goth sidekick, braving a long walk through sunlight to act as the Rebecca to my Carlos. We worked our way through the majority of the zombie infested train level from Resident Evil 0, ultimately losing to the end-of-level boss, a giant scorpion with a sensitive stinger.

Along the way, we unceremoniously shot stuff, often confusing one another's reticles for the other's, resulting in loads of wasted effort. The same was true for the last minute evade moves, ones that require rapid button presses or really frantic Wii-mote waving. Eventually, we realized we were standing on the wrong side of the screen in relation to our players and switched spots. It kind of helped.

There's something about Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles that just makes it difficult to get excited about. I think the most glaring problem is this: it's not fun. There's little sense of danger or feedback from the game that you're unloading hundreds of rounds on hordes of the undead. It's very sterile.

When we sat down with the game's producer, Masachika Kawata, Luke and I were pressing him for something that could get us excited to play it of our own accord. Would there be puzzles? No. Series of quick time events? Nope. There will be cut scenes, however! Ten hours of pointing and trigger pulling may be your thing, though.

I suppose the game will really appeal to those who absolutely love Resident Evil unconditionally. It's going to flesh out the storyline for those who care about the fall of the Umbrella Corporation. But it looks like it will also provide a fresh look at the series for those who are looking for arcade-style shooting using their Wii controllers. And those are both goals of Masachika Kawata, who really wants to bring in new fans.

Unfortunately, I don't really fall into either of those camps, so Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles feels like a "pass" to me.

<![CDATA[Umbrella Chronicles Producer Not Ruling Out Zombie Fit]]> We sat down with Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles producer Masachika Kawata yesterday to get up to speed on Capcom's Wii shooter. Sorry, zapper. Since Umbrella Chronicles is so straightforward—painfully so at times—I wanted to know when the Resident Evil series was going to find its sense of humor. Meaning, when was a Resident Evil game going to take advantage of the Wii Fit balance board. Kawata told us his thoughts on the peripheral, saying "As a parody, it would be kind of fun to make Biohazard Fitness." Oooh! That sounds just perfect.

Unfortunately, Kawata went back into casual gaming wet blanket mode, saying "Seriously, the game market in Japan has become too hardcore so I think something like Biohazard Fitness would actually broaden the market. Anything to break the market open is a welcome change for me." You lost us at "game market."

Honestly, Kawata, doing push ups to fend off the undead is a far, far better concept than shooting them (and you know it).

<![CDATA[Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles Screenshot Infestation!]]> Capcom has pumped out some twenty new screens of its Zapper-ific Wii shooter Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. It's looking better than ever and my cranky disdain for the game may be slowly eroding, revealing a shiny, smooth interest just under the hard curmudgeon exterior. On the one hand, the gameplay has seemed a bit clunky when I've had hands on time, but on the other, zombies.

<![CDATA[Capcom Rides Wii Wave To Profit]]> Some developers and publishers may piss and moan that Nintendo dominates sales charts, making it hard for third-parties to compete on the Wii and Nintendo DS. Not Capcom! They're turning competition lemons into profit lemonade, as the company's stock soared to highs not seen since its Onimusha 2 days. With a stock value boosted by "expectations sales" for Wii games, Capcom is laughing all the way to the bank. Sales of Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition are expected to exceed the company's expectations, according to the Credit Suisse Group in Tokyo.

If Capcom continues to be successful on the Wii, don't be surprised if some of your favorite Capcom franchises suddenly find themselves making their way to the waggle wonder.

With Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and Zack & Wiki still to come, plus a rumored return of Okami to the Wii, now might be a good time to talk to your broker about snagging some Capcom stock. One should keep in mind that I have absolutely no idea what the hell I'm talking about when it comes to investments and that all my money is tied up in cattle.

<![CDATA[Gallery: Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles]]> I seem to be the single wet blanket at the Resident Evil The Umbrella Chronicles party, as Capcom's Wii-remote shooter that runs on rails through Resident Evils 1 through 4 bored me to tears and drove me to drink. Actually, Destructoid's Robert Summa shared in my pain and alcohol intake, but he seems to hate a lot of things.

Where I agree with almost everyone is that the game is pretty. It's going to sell itself on screenshots, that's for sure, as it will speak to the graphics whore demographic and sell some Wiis. Let's just hope they tighten up the graphics on level two and make me really, truly want this shooter.

Judge for yourself with a whopping 33 atmospheric screens in our gallery.

<![CDATA[Capcom Confirms Resident Evil 4 Wii For Summer, Umbrella Chronicles After That]]> After showing up on retailer Gamestop's web site last month, it should come as no surprise that Capcom's Resident Evil 4 will be getting the Gamecube to Wii upgrade, but today it's official. Capcom has formally announced that Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition and will hit the Nintendo console sometime this summer.

RE4 Wii Edition will get the added content from the PlayStation 2 port, as well as new motion controls. According to the recently launched Japanese home page, the Wii remote will be used for things like reloading, aiming at enemies, and slicing up mindless cult members.

Capcom's other game, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, will be an "action/shooter hybrid" that spans locations from Resident Evil 0, 1, 2 and 3. Players will also get to check out the Umbrella Corporation's digs. We posted about the teaser vid earlier today, which you should check out.

One question remains. Will I be able to perform my duties as the Master of Unlocking with motion controls? Please say yes, Capcom!
