@SEX_BISON: Someone said that exact phrase on the day of the book's release in my guild's chat on World of Warcraft... maaaaaaaan were people pissed. I was smart enough to cut off all connection with the net until I had read the book lol... Some people are just crazy about spoiling shit for others - the thrill of being a dickwad, I guess? Crazy... #spoileralert
@sazzrah: I was smart enough not to read harry potter in the first place...
I kid I kid, well, I half kid, I didnt read HP but... yeh... you know what I mean.
But on topic, I too dispise people that belive they need to spoil endings for others, but your right, people, if you dont want to know the ending to something, or any spoilers, stay the hell away from the internet. #spoileralert
@Blore07: If anyone over the age of about 12 was anything remotely approaching smart, they wouldn't read a ridiculous kids book like Harry Potter. #spoileralert
@dowingba: Nanomachines, coma dream, magic: the holy trinity of plot resolutions. Anything can be explained with one of those things!
"Now, how do I explain how he escaped from that erupting volcano in a lifeboat made out of hemp...I GOT IT! It was a madwoman's fever dream! Million-seller list, here I come!" #spoileralert
@dowingba: I had midichlorians (sp?) written at first, but I made the same decision as exion and concluded they fell under the "nanomachines" banner. :)
And hey look, Tycho from Penny Arcade knows what I'm talking about!
Why not put an alternate, cushy Hollywood ending into the preview code with the "real" ending unlockable by playing the game in 100hr hardcore-you-die-when-an-enemy-sees-you mode. Then, the real ending won't be known until the game releases at retail ... probably. #spoileralert
So how are they going to be able to judge? You have to fully complete a game to be able to judge it properly. Also, not every reviewer spoils things. Only a couple douches do. This seems like a horrible idea. #spoileralert
Not a bad idea, but only if they're willing to invite bigger sites / mags, etc for an opportunity to go through those last few scenes they're going to omit. Wake is a big enough title that they should be willing to do something like that if the main aim is to prevent full game leaks from occuring. #spoileralert
i appreciate the thought behind this concept- but i want to read reviews of complete games. it's unfair to expect a critic to play through an entire game- only to cut them off at the end just before the payoff- and expect an honest (or positive) review.
the sources i read for gaming reviews are almost universally professional enough to not include major story/ending spoilers, and i don't want to read a bunch of negative reviews from angry critics who are (rightly) pissed that the developers made them trudge through an entire game and then not let them view the resolution of the game/story. it doesn't seem fair to the developer who may suffer penalties from potentially low review scores, it doesn't seem fair to the reviewer who has to play this thing and then write an honest critique- which makes it unfair to the consumer who doesn't get to read honest reviews of the complete game that they are expected to pay $60 for. #spoileralert
@Archaotic: the sources i read do finish the games. any credible review site/magazine insist on playing the final build to completion- and will often delay publishing a timely review to make sure that it's honest, complete and covers all elements of the game. #spoileralert
@(Zombie) Jölan: Don't get all mad at me that you haven't seen that episode of the Twilight Zone yet. It's at least 50 years old at this point. You had your chance. #spoileralert
@Bouchart: Not you, I'm just saying people in general. There is nothing funny, or remotely redeeming about posting spoilers. It doesn't make you cool. it doesn't make you funny, it makes you a dick. No matter how old something is, someone, somewhere has not seen it, and posting spoilers solely for the sake of posting spoilers is an asshole move. #spoileralert
@(Zombie) Jölan: I agree. There was this blog on IGN a couple weeks ago (really hope he doesn't frequent Kotaku) where a guy said he was only now getting into KotOR and he explicitly said, "I know I'm late to the game, but if anyone spoils the story for me, I will kill you" or something along those lines.
Some douchebag just one-lined the plot twist in a comment. And then must have felt bad, because a little later he posted "jk, that was a joke"
Don't know if the blogger realized it wasn't a joke... #spoileralert
@(Zombie) Jölan: Um, if a movie is based on something that everyone has already heard of (e.g. Titanic), then wouldn't it be stupid to think that the stupid movie wasn't already spoiled in the first place? I mean, Hollywood remade King Kong of all things and that's a cultural icon that most Americans should already know just from its reputation. #spoileralert
@Archaotic: Well, alot of movie reviews are based on early releases of movies, usually unfinished and not touched up or edited fully. Pretty much anything seen at film festivals are miles away from being finished, yet most reviewers base their reviews on them (see: inglorious basterds) #spoileralert
I dunno if I like that idea; the entire point of writing a good review is to play the ENTIRE game and gauge it on its merits as a full experience. A reviewer who plays a game for a few hours and that's it does himself, his readers, and the game itself a disservice by not judging the full title.
After all, several really good games have turned to total shit right before the end, and it's a reviewer's job to warn gamers of stuff like that.
@Archaotic: Well, they just suggested that the ending be withheld, so I should hope that the game sans the ending would not just be "a few hours" long. Although in today's game industry, that's becoming more and more the case... #spoileralert
@Archaotic: Certainly, but that's not what they're saying. Do you honestly believe that after playing a game for 30+ hours or whatever, that the last half hour is gonna completely turn everything around and give the game a different value entirely. Sure, a person's impression of the story might change a bit but a game is much more than that. I'm sure reviewers can judge the game pretty fairly even without the last chapter. #spoileralert
@Djungelurban: Yeah, but Alan Wake isn't gonna be a 30-hour game. It'll likely be around 10 at the most. That last hour could contain story developments that seriously harm the rest of the game. Resistance 2 did that. :[
The shorter the game is, the more of it people need to play to get a good handle on how it is. Hell, there are serious accusations floating around that some of the reviewers of GTA4 didn't even get to play the last act of the game before being sent off to write their "best game ever made" bullshit reviews.
For the sake of the integrity of the review process, reviewers HAVE to play the full game. That's the way I see it, at least.
@Killtacular: Exactly. At OLC, I don't allow a review to hit the publishing phase unless the game has been completed by the reviewer. If they can't be bothered to finish the game, they certainly don't have the viewpoint necessarily to look at it from a fair perspective. #spoileralert
I can't say that I entirely blame them. Too many people on the 'net spoiled the major twists of Halo 3, Gears of War 2, and Resistance 2, to name a few. Apparently, NDAs mean nothing to some people, and are hard to enforce.
I'd rather stay in the dark (pun intended) on Alan Wake, if possible. #spoileralert
