I don't really see an identity crisis, or problem here. Admittedly I loved DoW and CoH when I discovered those games, so my judgement may* be clouded. Also loved the hero system in WC3, so my tastes may not be typical..
* = is definitely
I think what they're doing with DoWII is a logical extension of the changes to typical RTS gameplay they made in CoH. Obviously now it's even more RPG+RTS=?, but I guess I'm willing to be optimistic and give it a shot. Maybe it will fail, but it sounds fun enough to me.
In CoH base building/management was already reduced to such a level that once you built a few things you didn't have to look at your base much again. CoH allowed you to queue up units from wherever(which isn't unique I know), didn't ask for a lot of extra micromanagement or resource gathering, which leaves the player free to control squads, vehicles, and special abilities. DoW II is, both in appearance and spirit, CoH 2.0.
I guess what I was getting at is: I like what I see and there are enough base building RTSes out there.
The only strategy involved here was positioning units around Gutrencha to fire from all sides and moving them out of the way whenever he aimed his hammer at them.
Hey, to a bunch of WoW players I ran into, that's asking quite a bit. You make it sound like moving out of the way is a trivial task..
I am not sold on it yet. While it is more 'tactical' it is definitely slower in pace then the RTS type of games. It only resembles Starcraft or even the other DOW games in some minor ways. Build order, upgrade troops, resource management.
To me it comes off as more of a turn based squad game that has been changed to real time.
Why do you say that like it's a bad thing? 40k is ,in fact, a turn based squad game. Anything that makes a computer game closer to the metal of the tabletop version is better in my book.
I find it really strange that the copycat franchise (Starcraft) has achieved such success through gameplay alone. Different games, of course. How does the beta play? Is it avaible yet?
@MOP88: Copycat? Dude, starcraft came out in 1998. If anything you could say dawn of war is the copycat. Not to raise a fight, in my opinion they are both excellent games, but still, I find it hard for starcraft to be the "Copycat" in this scenario.
I'd just like to say: try out the 3v3. I used to think that it might just be the 'friend factor' which makes 3v3's more fun, but I really do think that Relic was kind of telling the truth when they say the game was balanced around 3v3s. I think the map sizes work better, and the Victory Point Locations, 3 being on each map, works rather well in 3v3 as opposed to 1v1. If you take a point, you can then HOLD it. There's a lot less 'point/cap' dancing as it's called, and god forbid do not think that a game versus the AI (who loves to cap points like an idiot, especially when you consider that req. points aren't that important) represents how the game actually plays. It's a free beta, grab a friend or two, and play. Get used to the UI (it could be better, but it'll do), get used to what the units look like (you will get used to them, even though they could be more visually distinctive) and you'll have fun. Try not to be turned off by the UI / unit design, both of which could've borrowed more heavily from Blizzard IMO (i.e. distinctive unit design.)
Perhaps your unsophisticated tactics work on the mindless Tyranid or the hated Mon'Keigh Space Marines, but clearly the only reason you and your... ahem... "boyz" were able to defeat the might of the Craftworlds is that such was planned long ago...
:-P Stupid Orks, fear the Eldar and our massive waves of LAZA BEEMS! XD
Very cool.. even though this was a poorly kept secret. CoH actually has cool campaigns worth playing through, so more of that is great. New units is interesting, though I'd prefer another faction or two.
I don't have a clue what this "direct fire" feature could be... I hope it's either a great improvement, or doesn't affect things much. The game is pretty damn good as is.
The last time I played CoH, wasn't the whole game basically blobs of soldiers direct firing on each other? I loved CoH way back when it launched, but I quit when it became mass blobs.
