While we knew that Xbox 360 owners would get Rock Band earlier than everyone else (May 23rd), EA has announced that the Wii, PS2 and PS3 versions will not be released until August 29th. That's a loooong delay...namely for those who sleep next to their PS3 at night, one bed over, waiting intently to take their relationship "to the next level" over a game that's already been finished.
Rock Band coming to PS3, PS2 and Wii on August 29 [VideoGamer]

UPDATE - Videogamer's report was based on a Rock Band fact sheet sent to European press outlets, which listed a release date of August 29. EA have since retracted that date, saying it "isn't confirmed, and is on the fact sheet in error".

<![CDATA[ Week In Games: Licensed Schlock Rush Edition ]]> Few Kotaku readers will gripe that this week contains too many must-buys. The only complaints that will come from this pre-holiday release week will come weeks from now, as one is faced with a surprise copy of Alvin & The Chipmunks stashed under the tree. Consider it a good week to catch up on November's releases.

The Golden Compass (DS, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360)
Relive the magic of the computer animated film at home!

Beowulf (PSP)
Relive the magic of the computer animated film at home!

Alvin & The Chipmunks (PC, PS2, Wii)

Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2 (Xbox 360)
This is a game that you play with a "dance pad", stepping in time to the "rhythm."

Dragon Ball Z Budokan Tenkaichi 3 (Wii)
Big pecs, big hair, big action. Atari needs the money.

Godzilla Unleashed (Wii)
Giant monsters fight each other. Guys? Atari needs money.

Jenga (Wii)
The virtual version of the blocky board game. Seriously, Atari needs money. Bad.

Draglade (DS)
Atlus introduces Nintendo DS owners to "grapping", a hybrid of rhythm and fighting gameplay.

So, uh, who's getting what?

<![CDATA[ This Week's XBLA Releases Are Puzzling, In A Good Way ]]> This Wednesday, look for new releases Switchball and Word Puzzle on Xbox Live Arcade. While we don't know much about word-search-with-bombs title Word Puzzle, we really enjoyed our time with Switchball way back at E3. So for any marble game fiends, it's a promising download. Both games run 800 points (lesser known as $10).

On a side note, wouldn't a marble fiend fan group be fantastic? We could arrange lectures, readings and dicussions...all about marbles and their many incarnations in not-so-popular culture. Not interested? What if we tempt you with some matching embroidered polos? Yeah, thought so.

<![CDATA[ China Finally Getting WoW: The Burning Crusade ]]> burningcrusadebox.jpg It's been out in the rest of the world for several months, but Chinese gamers have yet to see The Burning Crusade expansion pack for WoW - but The9, the Chinese operator for the game, has finally announced it will be arriving 10 September. Chinese gamers haven't gotten any new content since October of last year, and their patience is running thin - not a good position for a currently beleaguered company to be in (lawsuits, pissed off gamers, and possible early license termination - oh my!):

Although World of Warcraft was launched in China six month after the game's launch in Western markets, previous content update releases usually lag North American market releases by a month. Chinese WoW players have not experienced any new content since last October, and their patience has been taxed to the limit. The number of average concurrent users (ACU) for WoW has dropped two quarters straight, from 340,000 ACU in the forth quarter of 2006 to 300,000 in the second quarter of 2007.

Some of the speculation is that the new anti-addiction measures (and the General Administration of Press and Publications (GAPP) that administers said measures) held up approval for the game. Regardless, Chinese WoW fans should be placated soon.

<![CDATA[ Famitsu's Nintendo Release Dates ]]>
It's Friday, so if you don't have any plans yet and are already feeling left out, then the following information might send you over the edge. Japan, who is already the family favorite when it comes to getting games first, has already got its list of upcoming games for Nintendo from Famitsu which are as follows:

July 2007: Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Fuuketsu no Grimoire (NDS, Square Enix)
July 2007: MushiKing Super Collection (Wii, Sega)
July 2007: Wii Health Pack (Wii, Nintendo)
July 2007: Mario Party 8 (Wii, Nintendo)
August 2007: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates (NDS, Square Enix)
October 2007: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, Nintendo)
November 2007: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2 (NDS, Nintendo)
November 2007: Dragon Quest IX (NDS, Square Enix)
December 2007: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii/NDS, Sega)
In late 2007: Wii with DVD playback (Nintendo)
2008: Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (Capcom)

Not many surprises here, but I'd really like to know when EXACTLY the Japanese are getting Mario Galaxy and Umbrella Chronicles. Clearly, as the adopted sons and daughters of the unit, we should expect to receive our hand-me-downs (gently-used and pre-shrunk) in the far-off distant future.

<![CDATA[ A Disappointing DS Christmas ]]>

Many of us are hoping that Santa — that morbidly obese, home-invading elf who sneaks into your house and stares, unblinking, at the supine, sleeping forms of small children in the middle of the night; "You're a naughty, naughty girl, aren't you?" he huskily breathes to himself — will load the nethers of our Christmas tree with lots of DS cartridges this Christmas.

Unfortunately, it looks like Santa's elves aren't going to have many to stuff into his sack. They'd better get cracking on programming some. This Christmas' DS game release list is looking bleak, with only another four games or so scheduled to come out before the holidays. Most of the problem is slow localization, though there's suspicion that Nintendo may want to clear the schedule so all Christmas money goes to the Wii.

<![CDATA[ The Settlers Yoke Oxen, Commute to the DS ]]>

It's so odd to think that, before the Nintendo DS, those of us looking for a portable real-time strategy game pretty much had to do with the Pocket PC. But here comes another one: Ubisoft has announced The Settlers is coming soon to a touch-screen near you.

Here's what it'll feature:

• The Settlers on the Nintendo DS will feature two campaigns, the Roman-campaign and the World-campaign. Of course, the game will also feature a free-play mode in which you can take on the CPU using every race available (Romans, Vikings, Nubians and Asians). • 30 different jobs and 6 different types of soldiers will be available in the game. • The game features 7 continents consisting out of different landtypes (forests, lava, ice, swamps) & bull; The game is controlled using the stylus • The top and bottom screens can be swapped in-game. This way you can use your stylus to navigate using the map, or select and give order to your settlers. Using the stylus its also possible to zoom in on your settlers.

Yeah, yeah. What I want to know: what the frick ever happened to the announced Jagged Alliance DS?

<![CDATA[ Your XBox is Dead ]]> xboxdead.jpg2006 is the last year your vintage XBox is going to be good for anything besides killing wharf rats. Bill Harris over at Dubious Quality has taken a look at the release dates of all announced XBox and 360 titles and the XBox is practically dead in the water:

45 Xbox 360 games are scheduled for release before the end of the year, but only 31 Xbox titles. Almost half of that 31 will be shipping by the end of June. After that, the 360 titles are listed in a 2-1 ratio for the end of the year... In other words, in about two months, the transition from Xbox to Xbox 360 is essentially over.

There are zero XBox titles slated for a 2007 release. We hope that this news means that Microsoft will continue to improve backwards compatibility on the 360, so we can finally chuck our XBox from the top of a skyscraper. Our entertainment center is only big enough for two fat, ugly Microsoft bricks, thank you very much. - Florian Eckhardt
