While there isn't yet a specific day, January 2009 is the target for the NA launch of the MMO, with closed beta testing kicking off on November 27th to coincide with the European launch.

For those curious about how subscriptions will work, TCoS will be utilizing a "Freemium" model. The client will be completely free to download, with players allowed to play the game for free within the starting zones until just before they reach Fame level 8, at which point they will be blocked from progressing any further. An interesting choice. Hit the jump for further details.

Acclaim Games Announces New North American Release Date for “The Chronicles of Spellborn”

Acclaim plans Closed Beta for end of November with an official release in January 2009

Los Angeles, CA (November 18, 2008) – Acclaim Games officially updates the release schedule for The Chronicles of Spellborn MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). With additional testing and ongoing game improvements, Acclaim’s release schedule has been updated with Closed Beta testing to begin on November 27 and a new release date scheduled for January 2009. Acclaim’s licensed territories for Spellborn will include North America, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and South America.

When the European countries go live on November 27, Acclaim will simultaneously start Close Beta testing in its territories and then go live in January 2009. Both launches will have the exact same product versions featuring identical Freemium models but with a different release date to accommodate additional testing for a smooth official release. Extensive testing of the game will ensure players receive the highest quality gaming experience at launch.

With players around the world eagerly anticipating the launch of Spellborn, the game has undergone some key upgrades to allow more players to participate and enjoy the various features of the online game. In all regions, Spellborn will be a “Freemium” game, with a Free to Play zone and a required premium subscription service in order to access the full game past the Free to Play zone.

The Spellborn game client will be completely free to download and install, and will feature the special Free to Play zone with no time restrictions (only level limit). Key features of this Free to Play zone include the following:

* Free players are limited to the starting zones Hawksmouth and Aldenvault.
* A gameplay limit occurs at Fame level 7, when free players have progressed approximately 90% towards Fame level 8.
* Upon reaching this limit, all character progression is blocked and the player will receive a pop-up informing them of this block and what is obtainable beyond this with a premium subscription.

The following elements will be explicitly blocked:

* Players will be unable to gain Fame in any way or form, frozen at a fixed amount.
* The player will be able to accept quests, but not able to complete any objectives/quests.
* Able to kill mobs, but the player will receive no kill credit. This means, no fame reward, no pep reward and no item reward.
* Unable to travel beyond the zones Hakwsmouth and Aldenvault.

Players who want the full game experience and wish to go past the zone restrictions must purchase a premium subscription option priced at $15 per month to open all game content. This Freemium model will allow many more players to experience the gameplay before choosing the premium subscription to access the full array of game features and content.

Initial feedback from the MMORPG player community has been excellent, and the development team is taking this feedback to make various improvements to the game. According to MMORPG.com’s list of the most popular games in the last 30 days, Spellborn is ranked at #3 (while World of Warcraft is at #8)! With hype for the game increasing steadily by the moment, players should be extremely excited to participate in the upcoming Closed Beta so they can see exactly what the Spellborn excitement is all about!

<![CDATA[ Wheelman Spins Out In February ]]> Midway is finally ready to give us a solid release date on Wheelman, which means our long struggle for another video game featuring the likeness and voice of Vin Diesel is finally over! Wheelman well be hitting stores simultaneously in North America and Europe on February 16th, with plans to be available everywhere no later than February 20th. It just misses Valentine's Day, but nothing say "I love you" quite like a pre-order of Wheelman for the Xbox 360, PS3, or PC.

“We’re designing Wheelman to play like a Hollywood blockbuster,” said Vin Diesel, Wheelman star and executive producer, Tigon Studios. “Playing this game will be just like taking control of the greatest car chases from feature films, except this time you’re in the driver’s seat.”

Think of it like the Transporter series of films, only instead of starring a physically fit bald man who talks funny, it...nevermind.

Midway Confirms February 16, 2009, Scheduled as Global Ship Date for Wheelman™

Action-Packed Open-World Driving Game Featuring Vin Diesel Expected To Be Available On Store Shelves by Feb. 20 In North America and Europe

CHICAGO—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Midway Games Inc. Midway is working closely with Vin Diesel and Tigon Studios to create an all-new property that is expected to eventually lead to a feature film, with a script that is already in development.

“This is not just another run-of-the-mill, licensed Hollywood knock-off,” said Matt Booty, president and CEO, Midway. “Wheelman features revolutionary new game design mechanics like cinematic super moves and vehicular combat. Once you experience Wheelman’s Vehicle Melee, you’ll never want to play another driving game without it!”

Vehicle Melee allows gamers to sideswipe pursuing enemies with a simple flick of the joystick Wheelman’s devastating “slam-n-ram” maneuvers can be carried out in all directions, just like you’d see in a Hollywood-style car chase.

Inspired by Hollywood’s most famous action-sequences, Wheelman will deliver powerful cinematic moments throughout the game’s compelling storyline.

<![CDATA[ Street Fighter IV Release Date Gets Specific ]]> Enough with the teasing screenshots and videos already! What we need is a solid release date for Capcom's Street Fighter IV, and Capcom is finally ready to oblige. Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of their latest fighting masterpiece will be coming to North America on Tuesday, February 17th, with our friends over in the more European side of the globe receiving it three days later on Friday the 20th.

The announcement on Capcom's Unity Blog also mentions something about picking up Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix when it releases in order to brush up on your fighting skills, a questionable marketing ploy if I ever saw one. Your steak is coming up, in the meantime we've fashioned this hamburger to look like a steak. Enjoy!

<![CDATA[ Eternal Sonata PS3 Coming In October ]]> While it might be old news to some of you, last we'd heard the long-awaited and greatly enhanced PlayStation 3 version of Eternal Sonata was scheduled for a release sometime in the fall. Well while we weren't looking, sometime in the fall became sometime in October, which then got narrowed down even further to October 21st. While it's only been a year or so since I played the original, the improvements made between that version and this one - new characters, extra cutscenes, new outfits, etc. - might just be enough for me to pick it up again. Besides, it will be novel to play a relatively high quality Japanese RPG on the PS3 for once.

Thanks to Sara for passing along the newsletter image with the date on it. Much appreciated!

<![CDATA[ MotorStorm Pacific Rift Speeds Towards October Release ]]> It's time to get down and dirty all over again as the Official PlayStation blog reveals the official release date for MotorStorm Pacific Rift, a follow up to what was briefly the best racing game available for the PlayStation 3. The game should be hitting stores on or around October 28th, just in time for the holiday Pacific island racing season. With all new four-player split screen multiplayer, sixteen tracks, real-time terrain deformation and *fanfare* trophy support, it looks to trump its predecessor in every way possible.

Also mentioned in the post is a retailer exclusive demo available to folks who pre-order the game from GameStop, a subtle hint that you should go and pre-order the game at GameStop. Glad I could clear that up.

<![CDATA[ Fable II Definitively Dated ]]> At Microsoft's E3 2008 press conference Peter Molyneux announced that Fable II would be released in October, but when in October? It's a pretty big month after all - one of the biggest in fact. Well now Microsoft has announced that the game will be in U.S. stores on October 21st, with folks over in Europe and the UK getting the title on the 24th. That gives us plenty of time to schedule time off, stock up on dog treats, and then return them to the store upon realizing we just bought treats for a virtual dog.

Along with the news comes a lovely shot of the full collector's edition, which we already talked about back in July but looks much better all spread out. It's just Microsoft's way of reminding you that you don't have to only spend $59.99 if you don't want to.

Damn Japanese people, living in the future.

<![CDATA[ Resident Evil 5 Launching March 2009 ]]>

The Microsoft press conference at E3 2008 saw a game demo of Capcom's Resident Evil 5, after which Jun Takeuchi announced the release date for the eagerly anticipated title. Resident Evil 5 will be launching worldwide on Friday, March 13th 2009, except for Japan who get it a day earlier. Friday the 13th? Really? How many months do you think they pushed it back just to get that special, more-evil Friday the 13th release?

<![CDATA[ Double D Dodgeball In Action ]]>
The screenshots I posted earlier this month of Yuke's Double D Dodgeball for Xbox Live Arcade did not do the game justice. Now they've released a trailer form the title, giving us a much better feel for what's going on in the game. It looks like a total blast, with relatively simple graphics augmented by XBLA's trademark glowy lighting effects. And hey, it supports the Xbox Live Camera!

As revealed at the end of the trailer, Double D Dodgeball is coming to Xbox Live July 30th.

<![CDATA[ Schizoid Coming To XBLA In July ]]> It feels like forever since I first sat down with Torpex Games' dream team of Bill Dugan and Jamie Fristrom about how fast and easy it was to develop using Microsoft's XNA . While the initial prototype may have only taken four days, the company's first game, Schizoid, has been in the works for quite some time. Well now things are coming to a head, as Torpex has dropped us a line to let us know that Schizoid will be making its Xbox Live Arcade debut next month. While no specific date or price was mentioned, it's good to know I'm that much closer to getting my hands on the title I've been itching for since early 2007.

<![CDATA[ Final Fantasy IV DS To Europe This Summer ]]> The 3D remake of what I consider to be the second best pre-CD era Final Fantasy games is heading to Europe this summer. Final Fantasy IV DS adds a layer of 3D shine to the characters many of us have known for years as 2D sprites, bringing Cecil, Kain, Rosa, and that damn spoony bard to life like never before. I wish they could be more specific than Summer 2008 for the Euro release, but with it heading stateside on July 22nd I am sure European fans will have it around that date, one way or another. To commemorate this vague release window, Squeenix gives you many pictures to print out and tape to your DS so you can pretend you're from the future.

<![CDATA[ Banjo-Kazooie 3 On Track For Christmas ]]> banjopuzzle.jpg While the teaser site hasn't provided much information regarding Rare's next entry in the Banjo-Kazooieverse for the Xbox 360, Rare community manager George Kelion has proved a veritable wellspring of information. Posting on the NeoGAF forum topic regarding the teaser site, Kelion says that the game should be coming out in time for Christmas this year.
The game is scheduled for a Holidays 2008 release - barring the coming of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, you should be playing Banjo 3 before the end of the year (providing you buy the game, that is).
Further assuaging forum-goers' fears, George promises the game isn't being developed for children, and that the game is safely in the hands of lead designer and Banjo-Kazooie creator Gregg Mayles. Finally, in response to the rather crappy-looking Banjo pic on the teaser site..
I really wouldn't base your ultimate judgments of the final Banjo model from what you've glimpsed on the teaser site if I were you - all shall be revealed in due course, not that long to wait now...

The game's previous vague release date of sometime in October has been chiseled down into the much more specific October 5th, at least for PAL territories. GameStop is still listing Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions for October 9th for the US, so if it comes down to it the more fanatical fan (Hi!) could always try for a very expensive overnight shipping import transaction. Bah, what's four days of Euro-envy between friends?

London (12th September 2007) - Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix® interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, today announces that the highly anticipated FINAL FANTASY TACTICS®: THE WAR OF THE LIONS™ will be released 5th October 2007 across all PAL territories on the PlayStation® Portable system.

From the creative minds behind FINAL FANTASY® XII comes an epic adventure set in the hugely successful FINAL FANTASY universe. <![CDATA[ Mass Effect Dated ]]> It's sad when you start secretly praying for game delays to keep yourself from going broke over the holiday season. Today Microsoft Game Studios adds another game to my ever-growing purchase list as BioWare's Mass Effect is penciled in for a November 20th release.

"With 'Mass Effect,' BioWare is delivering an incredible next-gen gaming odyssey. Our fans will journey through a vast, futuristic universe as they are challenged to make impactful decisions that will determine the very fate of the galaxy," said Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer, BioWare Corp.
Phew, for a minute there I thought they'd be traveling through a tiny, medieval universe on a horse-drawn cart, making decisions on where to stop for dinner. Now that I mention it, that would be kinda nifty. I just hope any game companies taking notes slate it for a summer release to give my wallet time to recover.
Critically-Acclaimed RPG "Mass Effect" Begins Epic Journey to Retailers on November 20

One of the hottest and most anticipated video games of the year will open up whole new worlds to explore this holiday, exclusively on Xbox 360

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (August 30, 2007) - Today, Microsoft Game Studios and BioWare Corp. announced that the highly anticipated action role-playing game (RPG) "Mass Effect" will ship to retailers throughout North America on November 20, 2007. The recipient of more than 50 awards, including the 2007 Game Critics Awards for "Best Console Game" and "Best RPG" at the Electronic Entertainment Expo last month in Los Angeles, "Mass Effect" is poised to become the must-play RPG of 2007.

From the creators of the critically-acclaimed "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" and "Jade Empire," comes an epic space saga for Xbox 360 that spans the entire galaxy. Combining RPG and tactical action elements, "Mass Effect" offers an engaging mix of gameplay set against a deep, multi-directional story.

<![CDATA[ EA Makes Skate Date - 360 Demo Coming ]]>
EA's entry into the Tony Hawk dominated skateboarding genre can't be contained by just one release date, so Electronic Arts has spread the love across four of them. The Xbox 360 version will be rolling into US stores on the 12th of September, with the UK version dropping two days later on the 14th. Then the US PlayStation 3 version will come waltzing in, easy as you please on the 24th in the states, with the UK release scheduled for October 2nd. I suppose in some circles this could be viewed as an Xbox 360 timed exclusive, but those circles are petty and short-sighted. What does seem to be exclusive on the 360 is the downloadable demo available on the 15th of this month via Xbox Live Marketplace, giving owners of the Microsoft console some idea of whether or not they should cancel their preorders. I'd like to think the demo will foster cooperation between owners of the two consoles, with the 360 fans reaching out to the PS3 owners with helpful tips and encouragement. *hides in bunker til smoke clears*

EA'S AWARD-WINNING SKATE VIDEO GAME ROLLS ONTO RETAIL SHELVES IN SEPTEMBER Download the Demo on Xbox Live Marketplace on August 15 to Experience True Skateboarding Action Before It Hits Stores

CHERTSEY, UK. - August 3, 2007 - Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced that its award-winning SKATE video game will ship to retail stores on September 12 in the U.S. and September 14 in Europe for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system. The PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system version will ship to stores on September 24 in the U.S. and October 5 in Europe. For players eager to get their hands on the game pre-launch, EA will release a SKATE demo on Xbox Live Marketplace on August 15 so players can experience first-hand the title's groundbreaking new gameplay style - a new way of playing skateboarding games that will invigorate the genre.

The downloadable demo features tutorials and gameplay challenges in San Vanelona's community center skatepark to introduce gamers to SKATE's revolutionary Flickit controls. The demo also includes the innovative skate.reel feature where gamers can capture video footage of their skate session at any time during the demo and share the footage online at www.skate.ea.com for other players to view, rate and comment on.

In the game, everything you do works towards getting you coverage in two of skateboarding's premiere magazines - Thrasher and The Skateboard Mag. Coverage also means sponsors, product, money and fame. Become a legend by getting the covers and you'll earn a coveted invitation to skate in the X Games - the world's top skateboarding competition. You'll be able to throw down on the street course and go huge in the Skateboard Big Air event, innovated and dominated by two time gold medalist Danny Way.

SKATE recently received the "Best Sports Game of E3 - IGN Xbox 360" award at the E3 tradeshow in Santa Monica. SKATE was also one of only four games nominated for Best Sports game for the "Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2007". The judges for this award included editors from the 36 leading videogame publications in the industry.

With innovative Flickit controls that take advantage of the dual analog sticks and the ability to sculpt tricks that define your own style, SKATE delivers an authentic boarding mecca like no other videogame. SKATE is developed by EA Black Box in Vancouver, British Columbia and is rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB and 12+ by PEGI.

<![CDATA[ Virtua Fighter 360 This Halloween ]]> Ever since Sega announced that the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 would be getting online multiplayer, fans of the series have been salivating over the though of going online and kicking each other's asses all over Xbox Live, except for me of course. I plan on forgetting to pick up the game for reasons in no way involving saving myself from complete humiliation. October 30th has been announced as the date that game retailers across the country respond to phone calls with, "No, that's just the ship date...we'll have it tomorrow, which means there is still time to preorder *click* hello?" It's a Virtua Fighter 5 Halloween Spooktacular!

Sorry, I've just always wanted to use the word Spooktacular.

<![CDATA[ Tamogotchi for Wii Dated ]]>
While every one else is peeling away what's left of their lobster-colored skin off their body at the end of the summer, you can keep all of your dermatological flakes to yourself now that Tamagotchi Party On! for the Wii will be avaliable in August. The mini-game marathon of becoming popular has never been fun in real life, but when you're a blob with giant eyes, or a squiggle with tiny arms, apparently it's the bee's knees. While trying to become president of Tamagotchi Planet, players can earn Gotchi points which can be used to customize their character or their Tamagotchi headquarters. Has anyone thought about sending Alan Sorkin a copy?

<![CDATA[ Bioshock Release Date Confirmed By 2K Games ]]>

After the Great Bioshock Scan Debacle Of 2006, I was understandably wary upon hearing the news from YouNewb that a Through the Looking Glass forum poster, claiming to be a 2K employee, stated that Irrational Games' upcoming FPS RPG would be coming out in June.

Well, it seems this time the rumor mill was running properly. In an interview with British game site, Computer and Video Games, 2k games has announced that Bioshock will definitely be landing in the U.S. in June. Later, CVG was again contacted by 2k informing them that the UK and European releases would also be in June. And no, it's still NOT coming to the PS3...

<![CDATA[ Blizzard Dates The Burning Crusade ]]>

Eagerly awaited by millions of players and gold farmers around the world, Blizzard's first World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade, has recieved an official release date. January 16th is the day when WoW servers flood to bursting with Blood Elf paladins and Draenei shamans, many of which will be naked, dancing females. I am so there.

Having played WoW on and off since launch, I am really hoping that the release date sticks. I'm so bored with the current content at this point I've started making up minigames to pass the time. Barrens Fire Nova Totem Gazelle Bowling is going to take the Azeroth by storm, mark my words.

<![CDATA[ Wii Countdown Clocks Coming ]]>

A leaked email reveals that Nintendo Countdown Clock will be hitting stores throughout the UK soon, unfortunately no one knows when they will start counting down.

I would imagine that the clocks have to start ticking down not too long after they are installed, so expect to hear some sort of Wii date in the coming weeks. At least, that's my guess.

<![CDATA[ Bandai Boss Says Spring PS3 'Impossible' ]]> It's like a wildfire of boring information. Games Industry reported that Bandai president Takeo Takasu described Sony's plans for the PS3's spring launch as "impossible." While no publishers prior to Takasu have said something so damning about the PS3 launch any frenzy this story is generating is just pent up angst.

Sony's released a criminally minute amount of information about their next-generation console. There's been a ton of rumors about the console's success or failure in development, different developers have commented on its ease for programming or how difficult it is to program for. While Spring 2006 may have been a launch target at one point for Sony, earlier this week it was pretty much official that the PS3 had missed its spring target. At this point, there's so little concrete information about Sony's PS3 that every possible nugget seems to make its way into the headlines. Sooner or later Sony is going to need to make some headlines of their own. Maybe this month's Game Developer's Conference will be the place.

<![CDATA[ PS3 in 22 Months? BBC Reporter was Only Speculating ]]> We reported that a BBC article hinted that the PlayStation 3 would launch 22 months after the Xbox 360, putting the Sony console's release sometime in 2007.

Eurogamer contacted the reporter from the BBC piece and the reporter admitted it was just speculation and nothing concrete. You can now return to your second job so that you can afford Sony's next console.
