Army of Two Has Region Protected Multiplayer

When Army of Two launched with decent reviews, we thought all was well in the world of mercenary combat simulation. But none of us expected the game to ship with region-locked multiplayer. Apparently, European Xbox 360 owners are unable to play he game with their US friends. Originally outed by gamers, the PAL Xbox 360 manual confirms the rumor:

The online game modes in Army of Two are not cross region compatible and is only supported between PAL discs.
An EA developer on the official EA forum speculates that the choice was made to reduce server loads (no word yet if PAL PS3s are similarly inflicted). Needless to say, it's an unpublicized annoyance that we hope does not become a pattern.

European Uncharted Demo November 22nd

I feel bad for all the Europeans who downloaded the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune demo for the PS3 only to be disappointed by the whole region lock issue, especially now that I've played the superb demo myself. I'm beginning to see why Crecente loves this game so much. Great action, natural-feeling platforming moments. It even addresses my biggest pet-peeve about games, which is getting wet. When our hero gets wet, his clothes are noticeably wet, but only to the degree the water touches him. If he crosses a stream, only the bottom of his pants get wet. It's always bothered me how games handled this, generally by ignoring the water. Man, I wanna go play it again, right now. *sighs dreamily* Oh! Right. IGN has confirmed with Sony that the Euro demo for the game will be up on November 22nd. That's just 13 days away! Of course, we'll have the full game by then, so we'll be sure to let you know how it is.

Stranglehold on PS3 - REGION LOCKED

John Woo's anticipated Stanglehold will be region locked on PS3, following the logic that, since the collector's edition comes with a movie (a cool, HD remastering of Hard Boiled) , it needs to be region locked. Okay, we're with you so far. So that means the standard edition, without any bundled movie, will be region free. Right? Midway? Sony? Anyone there?? More »

Mod Your Dreamcast At Home

For the half dozen Sega Dreamcast owners out there who haven't burned or bought themselves a boot disc nor had their Saturn-successor professionally modded, what the hell are you waiting for? The console is rich with fantastic imports from all regions, meaning a single-region Dreamcast is an unrealized potential Dreamcast. More »

Wii Region Locked Confirmed

Play-Asia.com has gotten posted sad confirmation that the Wii is completely region locked, and that includes Gamecube software as well. This means that while the innovative and imaginative Japanese are using the Wii to cook, learn new languages, and turn their children into walking supercomputers, we'll still be hurling our Wiimotes through our televisions like rabid monkeys trying to bowl. On the plus side they have tested the Gamecube Action Replay on the Wii, and it still allows you to play imported Gamecube games, so that's something at least. More »

Nintendo America Confirms Their Boner: "Wii Not Region Free"

Just in case there was still a hope fleeting through that last ounce of grey matter that Nintendo UK's David Yarnton was drunkenly ranting over a pint about the Wii not being region-free, you can officially dash it. More »

"Wii NOT Region Free." Bummer.

It's turning into a Nintendo he said, she said. Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan told Wired that the Wii would be region-free like the DS, but now Nintendo UK honcho David Yarnton is telling GamesIndustry.biz that Wii games and online content will be region-encoded. His exact quote: More »

Will The Wii Be Region-Free? Even Nintendo Doesn't Know.

One of the better moves Sony has made with the PS3 is the decision to make it region-free. So we've been curious whether Nintendo would follow suit. Unfortunately, looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer, since they are still stroking their chins and making vibrating noises in the back of their throats as they contemplate: More »

Region Free Xbox Live Marketplace Hack

Gamers Reports has a very cool work around for people who want access to some of the Xbox 360 demos only available in certain countries via Xbox Live Market. It s not exactly easy, but would likely be worth it for getting your hands on things like the Wrestle Kingdom demo. It basically entails creating a second Silver (read free) Xbox Live account on your Xbox 360 and then setting up your passport on a second email address and choosing a different home country. More »

PS3 to Use Same Region Code for U.S., Japan

Some Japanese publications are reporting that devices that use the Blu-ray disc technology will use a new region encoding system that will put Japan in the same region as North and South America. (Damn it, where's Ashcraft and his Japanese language skills when you need them?) According to an Ars Technica write-up, if the new system is used, it would mean American fans of Japanese games and anime would be able to directly play content from Japan, without waiting for a separate product release or having to buy and import a console from Asia. PS3 Tossing Region Coding?

Australian IT is reporting that the Playstation 3 will not have region coding. That s right, having to worry about what country you bought your game in may become a thing of the past. Michael Ephraim, Sony s managing director of computer entertainment Australia, told A-IT that the policy isn t really necessary any more, what with merging international TV standards and all. He s talking, of course, about the coming of the HD age. More »
