I see myself backstabbing nothing but air multiple times.
There needs to be a better way to actively remind you of the mob and it's actions when they are out of your FOV for intuitive counters and snaps. This has been the Achilles hills for many twitch/combo based, mob clearing games, I imagine it to be even more crucial in a FPS/S genre.
Isn't the game going to be rated M anyways?, lets see some more on screen cue to acknowledge the carnage you just committed on a 1:1 scale, .
agreed. the camera feels very limited in a first person capacity like this. at the very least they need to include a strafing option, but it doesn't look like you will be able to since the wiimote is used exclusively for sword controls...
Why are they even calling it Red Steel 2? As if it's a valuable IP or something. I'm not going to be impressed until we get some true 1:1 motion controls, there's still an apparent delay in this video.
@yargh: the first Red Steel was a critical flop but a consumer success so the IP does have value. The fact that the first game sold well enough is the reason we're even GETTING a sequel for them to redeem the swordplay controls.
I'm diggin it. Hey UBI...could you ...gee...I dunno....remake the original to make this quality. RS2 looks to further deliver on the promise that RS botched
For those who think they're being dumb by showing off 1:1 motion, and then showing off preset moves, you should watch the video where they discuss the reasons for some of the controls and designs they picked. Long story short (if I remember correctly), the game actually wasn't very fun without the preset moves, just using 1:1 motion, and it stated that most people... probably aren't that great with a sword. And having everything 1:1 tended to hurt people more than be totally intuitive.
They also discussed how the WM+ also allows them to track better: without it, in order to gauge speed they had to rely on the sensor bar, so if you started swinging your arm from behind the shoulder, that wouldn't register until it crossed the bar. To be honest, it looks like there is a little bit of lag still, but I think that may be because the moves seem to have some kind of dash that can be added into the startup, in which case it'd make sense.
It's a pretty good video, even if you aren't interested in Red Steel 2; it gives some interesting insight on not only what the WM+ allows over the normal WM, but why.
@omgwtflolbbl: I remember EA saying the same thing about why they dialed back the "1:1-ness" of Grand Slam. Seems like a perfectly valid argument to me.
I'm still not seeing the 1 to 1 motion where it counts most. Yeah you can see his hand move in 1 to 1 when hes not fighting, but during the action i saw a ton of delayed responses to the users inputs, the 1 to 1 actions were completely off during combat and looked like preset animations were being played after the user performed an action. Take a look at when the user swings and the way the characters arms are facing, its not even the same direction.
@Dakiero: You can slash away all you want like normal, but if you do a special move, yes, it does have a preset animation it. Which is how it should be.
@D-K, has mastered the dim-mak candlepunch: I remember there was some hupla about red steel 2 touting the 1:1 in their ads, or maybe it was just a mention of it works with motion plus. Haha, i would love to see them show someone's grandma playing this game. Especially if it was multiplayer and grandma pwns some teeange kid. Is this game supporting multiplayer?
@Dakiero: The day you will finally experience 1:1 control in a game, you will also rediscover why you decided to play game instead of doing real sport. Yeah I know, live isn't fair.
@slimky: exactly. These people that cry and moan about 1:1 don't have a clue as to what they're talking about. If any of them happen to know how to use a real katana then they might have an argument but other than that, it's ridiculous. To have 1:1 controls means you would have to have some knowledge of the weapons used so the motions accurately portray what a real blade would do in the game. Since a lot of these arm chair samurai, wanna-be action heros clearly comprehend know what that means, let's just leave UBI to it and wait until the game releases. I agree with you sir.

anyone else think we're heading to uncanny valley with controls now too?
the attacks may be impressively responsive to the motion controls, but video games will have to know where your whole body is (and never mind the concept of weight) before they make defending nearly as realistic.
so its "look at all these cool attacks i can do depending on how i swing the remote!" "awesome, how do you block" "oh, hold b".
@My Little Metroid: Escape from Butcher Bay would like to have a word with you, while Breakdown and Mirror's Edge just pretend they didn't hear what you said.
@FatherFingers: Welcome to my world.. it's a sort of tug of war.. most of the games on Wii do not appeal to me but some do, and do very well at appealing.
No More Heroes, Red Steel 2 and SSBB and Twilight Princess, which i still haven't played.. (god how that eats at my soul)
Oh and the glorious Muscle March.. but other than that there is no appeasing me with a Wii.. so i'll go to my monthly back and forth with the release calender to once again hold off..
But seriously.. not playing Zelda is hurting.. bad..
I kept buying into the Nintendo Peripheral craze and was buying whatever they threw out there. Soon I had a pile of crap that I used once and then months and months of nothing. Not even turning on the system. The 450 bucks looked better as a down payment on my GSXR, then sitting on a shelf idle.
I think I'm going to wait until a new Wii bundle comes out if I ever do buy it again. Who knows.
Not really. I think I'm just going to echo a lot of other player sentiments when I say the first game didn't really leave me with a good impression. It's too bad too, had this been possible three years ago we might be looking at a slightly different gaming landscape today. One where the action game would have migrated to the motion control schemes which promised so much. Maybe I'm just bitter, and that's enough for me not to make the jump this crowded season.

@That mop mutant from NES: The first Red Steel was rated T here in the states and M in Australia. So I guess it depends on where you live.

I had a feeling they used preset animations as well, especially since they're not touting the 1:1 horn in the ad..

I'm not opting for lovely rendered bowels dangling, or hoolahooping a liver around the sword but this is an FPS... where the hell is the impact!!!???

It might be one to get us closer to the holy grail of first person melee combat.
Not a sure buy for me, but I'll keep watching.

I was thinking more of first person + melee + motion control, really anyway. #redsteel2
