A sequel is planned, with an amazing subtitle.

R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate will be coming to Japan on October 29, according to a report from 1UP. In addition to telling the tale of semi-sweet chocolate in space, the next R-Type Tactics will pit human against human, one side of which has adopted Bydo alien technology, the other which logically resists such an abomination.

Expect twice as many units in R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate, the same hex-based space military strategy and a level of dry gameplay similar to the first. Will Atlus be sweet enough to bring the sequel stateside? Sounds perfect for a downloadable PSN title.

<![CDATA[R-Type Tactics Officially Coming Stateside In May]]> Atlus USA made it official today—R-Type Command (née R-Type Tactics) will be coming to North American PSPs on May 6. The Japanese shooter series makes its first foray into the world of turn-based strategy, bringing with it multiplayer action via Ad Hoc wireless that will let you play as the Bydo for the first time. Neat. R-Type Command is, indeed, unfortunately saddled with a higher-end PSP price at $39.99, which will probably further limit its acceptance beyond ultra-hardcore R-Type fans.

More details, if you're not turned off by the whole thing, right after this.

<![CDATA[R-Type Tactics Coming Stateside?]]> According to a historically reliable NeoGAF member, one who has access to Gamestop's list of upcoming software releases, Irem's R-Type Tactics is coming to North America courtesy of publisher Atlus. Rebranded R-Type Command, the game is said to be scheduled for a March 4, 2008 release date at an MSRP of $39.99. The game eschews the lightning fast reflexes needed to avoid enemy fire from Bido adversaries, instead offering up turn-based, hex-based strategic gameplay. You won't control just one ship, but a fleet of space craft.

We're waiting to hear back from Atlus on the matter to see if this rumor turns out to be true.

<![CDATA[R-Type Tactics Site Goes Live]]> Irem has pushed the R-Type Tactics web site live, giving shooter and strategy fans some sweet direct feed screenshots to obsess over until the game is finally released. Speaking of a release, the R-Type Tactics site lists a vague 2007 release for the PSP game and a price point of 5040 yen but offers little else in the way of solid gameplay details for non-Japanese speakers.

Profiles on the game's ships—including a look at the Bydo faction spacecraft—and storyline are also up, but don't get too excited unless you're armed with serious kanji knowledge.

<![CDATA[R-Type Tactics... R-Type. Tactics.]]> Looks like Irem wasn't kidding when it titled R-Type Final, the supposed final shoot 'em up in the long running, hard-as-hell sidescrolling series. Yes, details are scarce, but from what we can gather by these awful, awful scans from the latest Famitsu, R-Type is ditching twitch gameplay for a more chin-rubbingly strategic bent. Hex-based, turn-based and awesome-based, R-Type Tactics looks like a crazy cross-genre shooter that's just crazy enough to work.

I promise, I'll be watching like a hawk for any and all updates on R-Type Tactics. Keep your eyes peeled for news and the inevitable online campaign for a North American release.

Scan via The Next Level Forums. Thanks, Chris!
