Pwned.Com Responds to Pwnage Trademark Filing

Oh the Pwnage drama just won't stop.

Last weekend we reported that Futuremark Games had filed a trademark for Pwnage, later that week Jukka Mäkinen, Executive Producer, Futuremark Games Studio, responded claiming that they only filed the trademark because they wanted to "protect ourselves from squatters."

MTV, quick to poke fun, tracked down one of the folks who work at Pwned.Com to see what they think about the whole legal silliness.

"PWNED.com is a site for gamers pure and simple. We never felt the need to trademark the word we never created. We do this for fun. We are looking into our options because of this."

Yes, that's right, we need someone to trademark Pwned too.

Dual Shock 3 Is Better, Yo

It's nice to have the rumble back. Really, really nice. The SIXAXIS feels very, I dunno, empty? But now that we know the DS3 is coming and some of us have even gotten hands on, how does it compare with the DualShock 2? Is the DS3 rumble better? According to Metal Gear Solid 4 producer Ryan Payton:

Absolutely, yeah. It feels better...

And Payton knows his controls — he's one of the guys responsible for making MGS4's more intuitive. All the games I played at TGS with the DualShock 3 added what the French call I-don't-know-what to games. Not a fan of the SIXAXIS, not a fan at all.

Activision Makes Bizarre Acquisition

Activision has entered the racing game...game in a big way, by purchasing the developers of one of the greatest racing series around, Project Gotham Racing. That's right, Activision has purchased Bizarre Creations, creators of PGR as well as Geometry Wars. The Bizarre team will continue working on current projects while beginning development on two new 'AAA' titles, with the first expected sometime after fiscal year 2009.
Martyn Chudley, Managing Director of Bizarre Creations, said, "Our goal at Bizarre Creations has always been to do all we can to nurture our creative and passionate teams, who excel at and enjoy what they do. Activision's independent studio model will continue giving us creative freedom to build exciting new brands."
What this basically means is Microsoft can stop hogging all the racing goodness and let some of the other consoles take a spin. It won't be PGR of course, but whatever it ends up being should be awesome. Bring back Metropolis Street Racer! More »

Blazing Lizard Owns Pirates Vs. Ninjas

by Mark Wilson

There was a bit of nervous anticipation. Blazing Lizard's Lead Designer Christopher Stockman was on the line. He had just emailed me the pitch on his unannounced game after assuring me it was just the sort of thing Kotakuites, in particular, would love.

And in the 10 or so seconds of downloading and opening the document, I could feel the tension through the silent phone line. He was waiting for my reaction because it was an Important Moment.

"This is dramatic!" I said. He laughed. Back to silence. And then I saw the logo in big, bright letters: Pirates Vs. Ninjas Dodgeball.

"We own it; we own pirates versus ninjas!" Chris exclaimed. Yes—startup Blazing Lizard has actually filed a trademark for Pirates Vs. Ninjas, and it's all theirs.

Youngest Professional Gamer

This is the nightmare come true. Nothing hurts more than going online and getting whupped by some one who clearly has the voice of a person the fraction of your age. The New York Times yesterday did a story on one of their East Coast natives who is N-I-N-E and is considered by the Guiness Book of World Records as the world's youngest professional Gamer. Victor M. De Leon III has been playing on the professional circuit for the past five years (which, if my math serves me well made him four when he started), and he has won thousands of dollars in prizes and endorsements. I know for a fact I couldn't tie my shoelaces properly in the first grade, which would have made me 6 and this kid went on 60 Minutes as one of "the seven most amazing youngsters". More »
